Thornblade Location

Earliest Can be Found Guarding a Chest in Sea of Flowers

World View
Map Location

The earliest Thornblade you encounter can be found guarding a chest at the Sea of Flowers. You'll find it burrowed in the ground next to a chest and 3 Budsquires.

Note: If you accidentally defeat the Thornblade before you can capture it, fast travel away and advance time to respawn it. You'll unlock the option to change the time of day during the Ceremony Preparations main quest.

Obtain Sparkling Thornblade Using a Sparkling Cube

The only way to guarantee that you get a Sparkling Thornblade is to use a Sparkling Cube when catching one. However, if you have Sparkling Sigils to spare, you can spend those on an already-caught Thornblade to turn them into Sparkling.

How to Catch Sparkling (Shiny) Aniimo

Custom Egg Box - DPS Thornblade is Perfect Potential and Not Shining

Unfortunately, the Shining Thornblade Egg is a translation error. Hatching it will net you a Perfect Potential Thornblade rather than a Sparkling variant.

Chance to Spawn in Sea of Flowers Wild Surges

Thornblade can appear during Wild Surges in Sea of Flowers. Nurture the Bloom to trigger a Wild Surge and have a chance of encountering Thornblade. Make sure to nurture it using Grass Shards to spawn Budsquire instead of Dewy.

Thornblade's best team are Melloblum, Leafy, and Tuckin. This team revolves around Thornblade’s critical hits. Melloblum’s Rose Garden and Leafy’s Lotus Bloom amplify Thornblade’s output, with Leafy’s Vitality Bloom providing sufficient HP and EP sustain. Meanwhile, Tuckin’s Prank Master trait increases BREAK damage, helping the team deal even more overall damage.

Alternative Aniimo Options

Shrubclaw IconShrubclaw
Shrubclaw can be a substitue for Tuckin as the team's Break Aniimo. Verdant Beam and Leaf Slash would be good additions for damage.

Thornblade's best skills are Thorny Defense and Thorny Impact. Since Thornblade's strength comes primarily from critical hits, having these skills maximizes its damage output.

Since it will be difficult to get a full set that matches the personality traits above, your priority will be to get either E or N since Thornblade greatly benefits from additional ATK, Break, and Critical Rate.

Thornblade's best stats are Attack and Regen. Maximizing Attack allows Thornblade to deal as much damage as possible using its kit while Regen ensures it can sustain HP and EP while battling.

Should You Form a Contract with Your Held Item?

Thorny Rain IconThorny Rain
【BOOSTED】
Thorny Rain now grants a stack of Sword Dance, and the next basic attack skips to the third hit.

We recommend forming a contract with the Held item because the added Sword Dance stack makes stacking faster.

How to Play Thornblade

Recommended Skill Rotation

  1. Use Melloblum's Rose Garden for increased critical damage and Leafy's Lotus Bloom for increased Grass elemental damage.
  2. Swap to Thornblade, then use Thorny Impact and Thorny Defense for increased critical rate and build up Sword Dance stacks.
  3. Use up the Sword Dance stacks by attacking with basic attacks then use Elegant Waltz.
  4. Swap to your Support or Regen Aniimo and use skills that heal HP and/or restore EP.

Build Up Sword Dance Stacks

Thornblade's basic attacks can deal 180% extra damage per Sword Dance stack. You build Sword Dance stacks by using skills, for up to 4 stacks. This works great with Thorny Defense and Thorny Impact's or Lightning Impact's increased critical rate effect, allowing Thornblade to unleash devastating attacks.

Use Thorny Defense or Aqua Defense Against DPS Aniimo

Thorny Defense or Aqua Defense is highly effective against other DPS Aniimo. These skills reduce Thornblade’s damage taken by 20%, and if it’s struck while in stance, it retaliates with a counterattack—turning the enemy’s aggression back against them.

Use Thorny Rain to Deal Burst Damage

Thorny Rain has Thornblade attack a target 3 times rapidly. While it does decent damage on its own, if you use a Thorny Defense and Thorny Impact before Thorny Rain, each attack now has a chance to deal critical damage. When this happens, Thorny Rain becomes a powerful burst-damage skill.

Use Hit-and-Run Tactics

Thornblade has two dash skills—Thorny Impact and Lightning Impact. These allow it to quickly close the gap and get into melee range, setting up follow‑up skills or basic attacks. With this mobility, Thornblade excels as a hit‑and‑run damage dealer, relying on swift movements to dodge incoming attacks while striking back with bursts of damage.

Use to Plant Seeds, Gather, and Create Goods in Homeland

If Thornblade is not in your active party, you can assign it to plant seeds, gather resources, or create handcrafted goods in your Homeland.

Use Only 1 Budsquire to Defeat a Thornblade

To unlock Budsquire's Thornblade evolution, you'll need to remove all party members from your team and only leave in Budsquire. Once you have the solo Budsquire "team" set, challenge a Thornblade and defeat it to unlock the evolution branch. Some rules you need to follow:

  1. The team can only be 1 Budsquire. Do not add any other team members.
  2. Do not capture the Thornblade. The requirement is to defeat it so capturing invalidates the requirement.

If done correctly, a pop-up should appear on the left side of your screen saying "a remarkable change is about to happen."

To unlock the Thornblade evolution, you'll want to create a party of just one Budsquire. You can't have more in the roster (it needs to fight Thornblade solo). We've updated our guide to better explain the requirement! Thanks for using our page.

I can't evolve to Thornblade I tried countless time to defeat a Thornblade with team compose of only Budsquire. Those anyone have a solution?
