This deck only has 1 Wailmer card to lessen the chances of it being your only Basic Pokemon choice for your Active Spot at the start of the game. With its 3 Energy cost for its attack and its 3 Energy retreat cost, it's best placed on the Bench to be set up as Wailord ex.

The best Pokemon to have in your Active Spot at the start of the game is Suicune ex. This should allow you to find the cards you need faster to be able to evolve both Wailord ex and Baxcalibur on the Bench. Once Baxcalibur is in play, its Ability can be used to accelerate Energy onto Wailord ex.

Once it has enough Energy to attack, Wailord ex can be placed onto the Active Spot to tank and sweep the opponent's Pokemon. Use the Soothing Shore and Giant Cape cards to keep Wailord ex healthy and harder to knock out.

Heavy Helmet (B1 219)	→ • A Giant Cape card can be swapped out for a Heavy Helmet, which can be attached to Wailord ex to make it even harder to knock out. • It is still recommended to keep at least one Giant Cape for Suicune ex.
Lucky Ice Pop (B2 145)	→ • A Giant Cape card may be swapped out for a Lucky Ice Pop instead, so that you have an additional healing option. • Since Wailord ex doesn't really need more base HP, having the chance to heal up 20 damage or more may be the better option for it.

Wailord ex Deck Strategy Guide

Accelerate Energy Onto Wailord ex

Since Wailord ex requires 4 Energy to be able to use its attack, it's important to have other cards that can help accelerate its Energy such as Mantyke, Baxcalibur, or Mega Sharpedo ex.

You will want to keep Wailord ex on the Bench, while these Pokemon provide Energy to it. It's best to only move Wailord ex to the Active Spot once it has already been set up. Otherwise, it won't be able to do anything but take damage.

Bulk Up Wailord ex

The greatest asset of Wailord ex is its whopping 250 HP despite not being a Mega Evolution Pokemon. This makes it very hard to knock out naturally.

Wailord ex's Wondrous Waves attack also cures it of all Special Conditions, so status afflictions that do damage over time cannot reliably deplete its health.

You can further increase its staying power by using cards such as the Giant Cape, Heavy Helmet, or Soothing Shore. These cards can either increase Wailord ex's HP or decrease the damage taken from incoming attacks.

How to Beat Wailord ex Decks

Use a Strong Lightning-Type Deck

Wailord ex takes a long time to set up. You can take advantage of this by using a strong Lightning-type deck that can deal a lot of damage to the opponent before Wailord ex is able to attack.

You can use a Magnezone ex Deck to be able to deal a lot of damage to the bulky Wailord ex. With its Storm Blade attack, Magnezone ex can knock out Wailord ex in about 2 to 3 turns even if it has Trainer cards that are supporting it.

You may also opt to use a Tapu Koko ex Deck. This deals less damage, but Tapu Koko ex can start attacking almost immediately.

Sleep Decks Still Work on Wailord ex

Although Wailord ex can remove all Special Conditions inflicted on it once it uses its attack, some conditions such as sleep prevent the affected Pokemon from using attacks. Wailord ex cannot heal itself if it is unable to attack. This means that Sleep Decks are still effective against Wailord ex.

However, sleep-reliant decks tend to have lower damage output, which may still make it difficult to knock out the bulky Wailord ex. Well-timed wake-ups may allow Wailord ex to knock out your Pokmon and prevent them from putting it back to sleep, so it would be best to use a deck with a strong attacker as well.
