Gengar ex works both as an attacker and a disruptor, preventing your opponent from using Supporter cards. Indeedee ex is used as a supporting Pokemon in the Bench, healing its damaged allies.

You may switch Indeedee ex in to the Active Spot when dealing with Pokemon with high Attack Costs. Since Psychic deals more damage against enemies with a lot of Energy attached, Indeedee ex has the capability of landing OHKOs against certain threats.

You may use the non-ex Gengar in this deck to counter Pom-Pom Style Oricorio.

Giratina ex is featured alongside Gengar ex as a backup attacker that can set itself up with minimum effort. This also removes the deck's reliance on setting up a Gengar ex, with a Giratina ex readily available as an attacker.

Additionally, standard Gengar is included in the deck as a countermeasure against Pom-Pom Oricorio and can attack from the early game.

If you use a Rare Candy to set up Gengar ex as quickly as possible, your opponent will not be able to use Support Cards and lock them out of cards like Cyrus, Sabrina, and Professor's Research, so try to do so aggressively.

Gengar ex Deck Strategy Guide

Gengar ex's Shadowy Spellbind

Having Gengar ex in the Active Spot locks opponents out of using supporters because of its Shadowy Spellbind Ability. This Ability prevents your opponents from using Supporters, avoiding the additional damage from Red, and keeping your Benched Pokemon safe from Cyrus and Sabrina.

Use Early-Game Walls

Gengar ex needs quite a bit of setup as a Stage 2 Pokemon, so you may opt to Bench it until it is ready while another Pokemon takes the hits. Giratina ex is useful for its Energy Acceleration, but you may also use Hypno since it can inflict Sleep onto your opponents.

Transfer Energy With Dawn

After Gengar ex has evolved, it can be switched onto the Active Spot. If it doesn't have enough Energy for Spooky Shot yet, you may transfer a Psychic Energy from another Pokemon onto it with the help of Dawn.

How to Beat Gengar ex Decks

Knock Out Ghastly and Haunter

Since Gengar ex takes time to set up, you can take advantage of this by knocking out its pre-evolutions. Sabrina and Cyrus can draw them out to the Active Spot, but you can also use cards that can damage Benched Pokemon such as Genetic Apex Hitmonlee.

Use Fast Darkness-Type Decks

You can defeat Gengar ex with Darkness decks that do not require much setup. Not only can they take advantage of Gengar ex's weakness, but they can also attack faster due to the lower Attack Cost.
