Pokemon TGC Pocket - Altaria Best Deck Build and How to Play

This guide will show you how to build some of the strongest Altaria Decks. We'll cover the best Altaria Deck builds, how to use them, as well how to beat Altaria Decks, and more!

The decks on this page reflect the meta around the Ruler of the Skies Expansion.

Best Altaria Decks

Altaria Deck Variants Strengths and Weaknesses
Mega Rayquaza ex and Altaria Deck Icon Mega Rayquaza ex and Altaria Deck Strengths:
• Mega Rayquaza ex can deal 100 or more damage depending on the amount of Energy it discards.
• Altaria only requires 2 Energy (Any Type) to attack.
• Altaria serves as a secondary attacker while building Mega Rayquaza ex.
Weaknesses:
• Mega Rayquaza ex's attack requires it to discard all Energy.
• May be inconsistent because of its Attack Cost that costs two different Energy.
Altaria Deck Icon Altaria Deck Strengths:
• Unlike other Dragon Pokemon, Altaria can use any energy type.
• With the help of Baby Pokemon, you can get Altaria dealing 100 damage as early as the second turn.
Weaknesses:
• Baby Pokemon have very low HP and can easily be defeated.
• Altaria can be easily KO'd by heavy hitting Pokemon.

Mega Rayquaza ex is the main damage dealer in this deck who can pick off larger opponents, while Altaria is the secondary attacker.

Mega Rayquaza ex can deal 50 damage per Energy it discards from its card when it attacks. Since Mega Rayquaza ex requires one Fire Energy and one Lightning Energy to use its attack, you will always be inflicting at least 100 or more damage at your opponent.

The best strategy for this deck is to let the Energy build up on Mega Rayquaza ex until you can OHKO's the opponent's tankier Pokemon. In the meantime, you can use Altaria as an attacker while you build Mega Rayquaza ex.

Since you will be discarding a lot of Energy in this deck, use Dragonair's Ability alongside the Rainbow Cave to replenish lost Energy to your Pokemon.

Using Baby Pokemon like Pichu, Magby, or Mantyke, you can generate a different type energy which you can place on Altaria to boost its damage.

If you have the First Turn, you will not get any energy from the Energy Zone during the initial start of the battle. However, since Baby Pokemon do not need energy to use their moves, you can use them to place energy on your Pokemon even during the First Turn.

If you have Altaria on the Bench during this time, you can get Altaria to deal 100 damage as early as the second turn. This will completely destroy your opponent's early game set-up.

Darkrai ex can be used as a secondary attacker and an additional damage booster. If you place energy on Darkrai ex, its ability will deal an additional 20 damage on the opponent's Active Pokemon.

Altaria Deck Strategy Guide

Use Baby Pokemon for Alternate Energy Types

Using Baby Pokemon can help generate a different energy type for Altaria without risking your deck's energy consistency. If you manage to place down a Baby Pokemon during the First Turn start of the game, you can use its move to immediately generate energy for Altaria. This allows Altaria to start hitting 100 damage as early as the second turn.

Cards That Don't Need Energy to Attack

Use Cards That Can Boost Damage

Altaria is very strong during the early game, but its damage output may struggle to compete once it reaches the late game. It is best to bring cards like Red or Giovanni who can boost Altaria's damage during critical moments.

How to Beat Altaria Decks

Target Baby Pokemon

Baby Pokemon have low HP, and even after being switched out, there are still ways for you to force them into the Active Spot.

If there aren't any other Bench cards, you can use Sabrina to bring the Baby Pokemon back to the Active Spot.

You can also use Pokemon that can damage the Bench like Lucario ex or Zebstrika for easy OHKOs.

Cards That Can Damage the Bench

Use Heavy Hitting Pokemon

Altaria can be KO'd quite easily by most ex Pokemon. Using Pokemon who can be built fast and hit hard like Solgaleo ex or Giratina ex can sweep Altaria.
