Dragon's Dogma 2 (DD2) Dark Arisen

How to Kill Death

How to Kill Death

Death is a secret boss in the Dark Arisen DLC of Dragon's Dogma 2 (DD2). Learn where to find Death and how to fight it, including the best build and party against him!

How to Find Death

Found in Virulent and Devouring Rancors

Rancor Vortexes

Death can be randomly encountered during a Virulent and Devouring Vortex raid, found in Norgan during a Ruin-Night state in the region. It is the same state that happens during the post-game Into Rancor quest.

He comes out at random phases within these vortexes or Rancors. Be aware that during the encounter, there will be plenty of enemies spawning during Death's phase.

Death Will Run Away

Death Will Run Away

After chipping enough damage, Death will attempt to escape. Your goal is to dish out as much damage as possible in a short window. Despite the nerf Magick Archer recieved in Dark Arisen, this Vocation excells really well because of the newly added Harmonic Pentad Skill.

How to Make Death Spawn

Save and Quit Until He Comes

Getting Death to Spawn

To reliably make him spawn in the red Rancors, all you need to do is save in front of these vortices. If Death does not spawn in any of the phases of the raid, simply load back the save. This way, you do not need to keep running for different Rancors, as Death's chance to spawn is completely random.

Moveset and Best Relic Skills

In terms of hunting Death, there's not much really to look out for except for increased Magic Damage and high DPS passives. Look out for Battle Frenzy IV to inflate your damage output, but just be aware of how this passive will turn you into a glass cannon. What matters most is slotting Harmonic Pentad for the Holy Damage. You unlock it at the Magick Archer Obelisk at Norgan Snowfield, and must unlock it during a Ruin-Night event.

Best Augments and Rings

You want to kill Death as fast as possible hence the build focuses on a lot of damage amps. We recommend runnnig 2 Rings of Percipience for added Magick Damage or swapping one of them with a Ring of Exorcism for an extra bonus against Death (Spirit).

Your 7th Augment is a flex slot. We would recommend either Subtlety for less enemy aggro, or Ascendency for DPS for your Pawns. You can unlock your 7th Augment Slot by purchasing the Augmentum Scriptura from Dwayne with 20 Norgan Ducats.

Best Party for Death

We recommend Mage as your Main Pawn, as you can customize their loadout and skills. High Celerity is really good for Death's fight, as the extra movement speed is invaluable when fighting Death.

Argent Solance, the upgraded Argent Succor from Relics, provides good stamina recovery on top of extended healing. Lastly you can also slot in Deific Bolt special skill to upgrade your Mage's Exalted Bolt so they can provide passive damage against the boss and buff a hired Sorcerer.

Hire a Tank Fighter

A hired Fighter Pawn with Shield Summons or equipped with the Ring of Derision is essential to have in this fight to draw enemies away from you.

Try to look for a pawn with the relic skills Cloudfall Strike and Tornadic Strike for fast attacks and Punishing Counter to keep other enemies away as you focus on Death. Alternatively, if they have Brand of Fealty, it can suffice.

Hire a Sorcerer or Archer Last

Sorcerers are a reliable pick due to the synergy well with your support mage who will buff their regular attacks with Exalted Bolt. Try to look for Pawns with the Augural Flare as you can easily power up the spell with your bow attacks.

An Archer is as valuable as a Sorcerer, as having a reliable ranged DPS against Death will speed up his skirmishes. They will also most likely stay clear from Death when trying to DPS him. Look for a Pawn with at least Critical Shot on their Relic Skills.

How to Beat Death

Satanachia Fight Tips

Bring Health Curatives

Bring Allheal Elixers

Similar to Satanachia's fight, make sure you bring curatives such as Allheal Elixirs, Panaceas, and Regeneration Elixirs to quickly heal if you get caught by Death's One-Hit KO (OHKO). You can also bring some Wakestones for the fight in case you couldn't out-heal Death's OHKO.

Bring Waking Powders

Sleep Debilitation

Death's personal gimmick is putting your team to sleep. Even if you try to keep your distance, Death has a large AoE in casting the snoozing spell. The perfect setup for him to wipe your team in a single swing.

Bring at least 3 Waking Powders for each team member. The Pawn AI will automatically use it on themselves if they fall asleep.

Be Mindful of Your Surroundings

Be Mindful of Your Surroundings
A lot of common mobs and bosses will spawn to distract and stagger you. When setting up and fighting Death, make sure you are in a good position to start DPS-ing the secret boss.

Spam Harmonic Pentad

Shooting Harmonic Pentad

To kill Death quickly, fully cast and charge Harmonic Pentad and shoot a random teammate (5 charges). Afterwards, just shoot a fully charged Rivet Shot at Death. Repeat applying Harmonic Pentad, as the extra Holy Damage only applies to one bolt.

Just make sure you fully cast Harmonic Pentad, as even having 4 charges will not grant you the Holy Buff. Reposition when needed and be ready to use your curatives.

Defeating the secret boss does not yield any extra rewards. It's mostly bragging rights, which is when you earn the Death Reaper Badge. Treat it as a normal Rancor raid.
