The Marcher's Set is a good early-game armor set to equip without spending gold. It's possible to find all three pieces and an Expeditioner's Cloak by opening a chest in Vernworth Castle. This should save you some gold early on while staying well-defended.

Once you have enough gold, you can upgrade to armor sets from Bjorn's Armory later.
