How to Beat Blackdogs

Blackdogs

Blackdogs are new elite direwolf enemies added in the Dark Arisen DLC of Dragon's Dogma 2 (DD2). Learn how to beat a Blackdog and where to find them here!

How to Beat Blackdogs

Use Holy Damage

Deal Holy
Blackdogs are protected by an aura that makes them immune to all damage. The only way to break it is with Holy damage, so physical and non-Holy magick attacks will do nothing until the aura is gone.

Mages can deal Holy damage with High Empyrean and Virtuous Bolt, while other vocations can deal damage by equipping Holy-infused weapons.
How to Deal Holy Damage

Use Holy Grimoires

Holy Grimoires such as Effulgent Aurora, which is a newly added spellbook in the DLC would also work to break the aura. These can be obtained through relic appraisal.

Relics of the Past Walkthrough

Lure the Blackdog into Anodyne

Lure
You can also break the aura with Anodyne, the healing field that Mage Pawns automatically cast if you have one in your party. Draw the Blackdog through the healing field, and the aura will break the moment it touches it.

If you don’t have a Mage in your party, use Emergent Vitality spellbooks to cast Anodyne yourself. Stay close to the sigil so the Blackdog is likely to run through it.

Attack Quickly Before the Aura Returns

Once the aura is gone, the Blackdog will be vulnerable and move much slower. The aura comes back after a short time, so use your strongest attacks right away. Keep a Holy source ready to break it again.

Blackdogs Location

A Blackdog is located east of Norgan Snowfield, where Morgus says it was last seen during A Howl in the Dark. It only appears at night during a whiteout, so bring Heatstones to stay warm during the battle and traversal.
