Surveying & Mapping Studies is the calibration event in Genshin Impact. See how you can find and mark calibration targets on the map in this guide!
How to Find and Mark Calibration Targets on the Map
The solution for this event is randomized across stages, as such we'll give general tips for this event to help you get started!
Here is how you mark calibration targets in this event:
- Activate the compass to mark it on the map.
- Find your current location based on the compasses.
- Go to the calibration target (heads of Jean, Varka, or Eula).
- Open your map and accurately guess where the target is based on the reference points you've obtained.
Activate the Compass to Find Reference Points
Each map has Compass devices that act as reference points within the stage map. Activate the Compasses to make them show up in the map to allow you to map out the terrain.
The Compass will also point in the direction where the calibration target is located.
Mark the Calibration Targets on the Map
The Calibration Targets are the head furnishings of Jean, Varka, or Eula. You will need to open your map and pinpoint the location of where you think those furnishings might be.
Once you've determined where the calibration target is, mark its position on the map to complete the stage! The closer to the target, the lower error value you get, and the higher your Round Score will be.
As long as you mark within 9m error value or less for each calibration target, you will have enough points to get all the rewards in the stage.

Tutorial Stage for Surveying & Mapping
The first stage acts as a Tutorial stage where the calibration targets and Compass locations may vary from each playthrough.
Activate all compasses first to better guide yourself. Then, find the Jean-head plush. This is the objective you'll need to mark on the map. Once you find it, open up your map and accurately guess where the plush is using the clues in mind!
As a tip, take note of the small edges or cliffs on the map and check where it is in the world to triangulate the objective.

The second stage has randomized calibration targets and compass locations. Include Furina or Kaeya in your team before starting as they can help navigate the watery terrain easier!

Stage 3 - Exploring the Vast Unmarked Plains

The third stage is set in an area of Natlan, and you can use a Natlan Character to navigate the uneven plains easier.
Take note that the Compass locations can also vary, and use the rock formations marked in the map to guide your calibration. There is also a Statue of the Seven that remains in place to help you keep track of locations.
Stage 4 - Probing the Meandering Waters

In the fourth stage, the biggest landmark is the giant tree in the middle of the winding stream in northern Nantianmen, Liyue. The Compasses are often around the tree, making them easier to keep track of.
Stage 5 - Surveying the Desolate Crimson Sands

The desert area in Stage 5 makes finding exact points harder to determine due to the similar-looking environment and colors. From our playthroughs, the calibration target can be triangulated from the abandoned tent and rubble or nearby each sharp triangular corners of the borders as your main points of reference.
This stage also only has two compasses.
Stage 6 - Sketches from High Ground

There will be 4 random compasses you can activate for this final stage, with the big tree in the middle as your main point of reference. Wind currents are also accessible here to easily get up cliffs.
Calibration targets are either on top of a cliff, inside the alcove near the center, or beside the big tree.
As the area may have too much information to make use of, try to focus on the shape of the cliff you're on and find the exact location nearby the colored compasses.

Complete Archon Quest Prologue Act 3
To unlock Surveying & Mapping Studies, you must complete the Prologue Act 3 Archon Quest, Song of the Dragon and Freedom and reach at least Adventure Rank 20!

Go to the hill across the bridge outside of Mondstadt City and talk to Mika to complete the event unlock quest, A Knight's Guide to Surveying! Afterwards, you can start playing Surveying & Mapping Studies.
