| General Team Comps | ||||
| Tartaglia's best vaporize team as of now due to the potency of its Pyro applicators. |
A Lunar-Charged variant that works for Tartaglia assuming all members are built and he has invested into Lunar-Charged specifically. |
|||
By modern standards, Tartaglia still utilizes the same Hydro-focused build with Nymph's Dream and his signature Polar Star, but is now run in modern teams that can utilize his Hydro application more often.
Regardless, Tartaglia still wants to focus on his standard ATK/Hydro/CRIT artifacts with an emphasis on CRIT DMG and CRIT Rate.
| Stat | Goal Value |
|---|---|
| ATK | 1,800~2,100 |
| CRIT Rate | 70%~80% |
| CRIT DMG | 180% or Above |
| Energy Recharge | 110% ~ 130% |
For someone like Tartaglia, having a strict balance of ATK and CRIT stats is required to keep his damage consistent, with 2,100 ATK being Tartaglia's sweet spot, alongside 80% CRIT Rate and 180% CRIT DMG or more.
In most teams, having 130% Energy Recharge means Tartaglia can use his Ranged Elemental Burst nearly every rotation.
| 1st | 2nd | 3rd |
|---|---|---|
| Elemental Skill | Elemental Burst | Normal Attack |
Majority of Tartaglia's damage comes from his Elemental Skill, so prioritize in leveling it up before upgrading the rest of his kit.
Until now, Polar Star is still Tartaglia's best weapon since its effects are entirely synergistic with both Tartaglia, and the Nymph's Dream artifact set.
Otherwise, The First Great Magic and Skyward Harp are his best premium alternatives, with Jade Vista as a minimum-spender option, and Chain Breaker as an F2P option.
| Best Weapons for Tartaglia | |
|---|---|
| Best-in-Slot | Polar Star Polar Star Base ATK: 608 Bonus Stat: CRIT Rate 33.1% Skill Effect: Elemental Skill and Elemental Burst DMG increased by 12%. After a Normal Attack, Charged Attack, Elemental Skill or Elemental Burst hits an opponent, 1 stack of Ashen Nightstar will be gained for 12s. When 1/2/3/4 stacks of Ashen Nightstar are present, ATK is increased by 10/20/30/48%. The stack of Ashen Nightstar created by the Normal Attack, Charged Attack, Elemental Skill or Elemental Burst will be counted independently of the others. |
| Standing the test of time, Polar Star still remains the best option for Tartaglia due to how easily he can trigger all of its conditionals to gain more buffs on his attacks. | |
| Alternative | The First Great Magic The First Great Magic Base ATK: 608 Bonus Stat: CRIT DMG 66.2% Skill Effect: DMG dealt by Charged Attacks increased by 16%. For every party member with the same Elemental Type as the wielder (including the wielder themselves), gain 1 Gimmick stack. For every party member with a different Elemental Type from the wielder, gain 1 Theatrics stack. When the wielder has 1/2/3 or more Gimmick stacks, ATK will be increased by 16%/32%/48%. When the wielder has 1/2/3 or more Theatrics stacks, Movement SPD will be increased by 4%/7%/10%. |
| The First Great Magic remains a great alternative for Tartaglia, but requires him to utilize his Charged Attacks more often. This is not much of an issue since he tends to do this in most of his combos anyway. | |
| Generalist | Skyward Harp Skyward Harp Base ATK: 674 Bonus Stat: CRIT Rate 22.1% Skill Effect: Increases CRIT DMG by 20%. Hits have a 60% chance to inflict a small AoE attack, dealing 125% Physical ATK DMG. Can only occur once every 4s. |
| In terms of general options, Skyward Harp still stands out due to being a solid weapon that does not have much conditionals. | |
| Battlepass | Jade Vista Jade Vista Base ATK: 510 Bonus Stat: CRIT Rate 27.6% Skill Effect: • For every party member other than the equipping character: • • Who is of the same Elemental Type as the equipper: The equipping character's Elemental Mastery is increased by 64; • • Who is not of the same Elemental Type as the equipper: The equipping character's ATK increases by 12%. • The two effects described above can stack up to 3 times in total, with Elemental Mastery buffs applied first. |
| Jade Vista gives Tartaglia a generous amount of CRIT Rate and ATK%, especially at higher refinements. At R5, this becomes competitive to some of his 5-star options, but requires investment into the Battlepass to obtain. | |
| F2P (Craftable) | Chain Breaker Chain Breaker Base ATK: 565 Bonus Stat: ATK 27.6% Skill Effect: For every party member from Natlan or who has a different Elemental Type from the equipping character, the equipping character gains 4.8% increased ATK. When there are no less than 3 of the aforementioned characters, the equipping character gains 24 Elemental Mastery. |
| As of its release, Chain Breaker has become Tartaglia's best F2P choice since it performs a similar effect to Jade Vista, but without the CRIT Rate that Jade Vista offers, and to a lower degree of effectiveness on the stats. | |

In terms of pure synergy, Nymph's Dream is still Tartaglia's best artifact set since its full effects are something that Tartaglia can uniquely trigger with ease.
Otherwise, Heart of Depth or Night of the Sky's Unveiling in Lunar-Charged teams are his best alternatives.
| Best Artifact Sets for Tartaglia | |
|---|---|
| Best-in-Slot | Nymph's Dream Nymph's Dream 2-PC: Hydro DMG bonus +15% 4-PC: After Normal, Charged, and Plunging Attacks, Elemental Skills, and Elemental Bursts hit opponents, 1 stack of Mirrored Nymph will be triggered, lasting 8s. When under the effect of 1, 2, or 3 or more Mirrored Nymph Stacks, ATK will be increased by 7%/16%/25%, and Hydro DMG bonus will be increased by 4%/9%/15%. Mirrored Nymph stacks created by Normal, Charged, and Plunging Attacks, Elemental Skills, and Elemental Bursts exist independently. |
| Nymph's Dream is Tartaglia's best-in-slot artifact set, offering him increases to ATK and Hydro DMG Bonus. | |
| Hydro Alt | Heart of Depth Heart of Depth 2-PC: Hydro DMG Bonus +15% 4-PC: After using Elemental Skill, increases Normal Attack and Charged Attack DMG by 30% for 15s. |
| Heart of Depth's passives specifically affect his Normal and Charged ATK damage, which is responsible for 60% of his overall DPS, which makes this a good alternative if you have better stats. Take note that this comes at the cost of having lower overall Frontloaded Burst damage. |
|
| Lunar Teams | Night of the Sky's Unveiling Night of the Sky's Unveiling 2-PC: Elemental Mastery +80 4-PC: When nearby party members trigger Lunar Reactions, if the equipping character is on the field, gain the Gleaming Moon: Intent effect for 4s: Increases CRIT Rate by 15%/30% when the party's Moonsign is Nascent/Ascendant Gleam. All party members' Lunar Reaction DMG is increased by 10% for each different Gleaming Moon effect that party members have. Effects from Gleaming Moon cannot stack. |
| In specific scenarios, Tartaglia benefits more from Night of the Sky's Unveiling when placed in Lunar-Charged teams, and grants more damage to not only him via his CRIT Rate, but to the rest of his team via the Lunar Reaction DMG buffs. | |
| Stat Priority | ||
|---|---|---|
| Substats: CRIT DMG > CRIT Rate > ATK > Energy Recharge > Elemental Mastery |
||
| Summary: • Energy Recharge should be achieved via substats and never through main stats. • Due to Tartaglia's ways of getting CRIT Rate, CRIT Rate circlets are preferred over CRIT DMG for consistency, but CRIT DMG is preferred if you already have around 70% CRIT Rate. |

List of Artifacts and Set Bonuses
Even within today's standards, Tartaglia is still a solid Hydro driver for most vaporize teams, and can even function in certain Freeze and Lunar-Charged comps.
He is most optimally paired with two Pyro teammates for Pyro resonance, and the ability to nearly vaporize all of his attacks, leading to more damage.

| C1 |
Foul Legacy: Tide Withholder Decreases the CD of Foul Legacy: Raging Tide by 20%. |

Foul Legacy: Understream When opponents affected by Riptide are defeated, Tartaglia regenerates 4 Elemental Energy. |
| C3 |
Abyssal Mayhem: Vortex of Turmoil Increases the Level of Foul Legacy: Raging Tide by 3. Maximum upgrade level is 15. |
| C4 |
Abyssal Mayhem: Hydrospout If Tartaglia is in Foul Legacy: Raging Tide's Melee Stance, triggers Riptide Slash against opponents on the field affected by Riptide every 4s, otherwise, triggers Riptide Flash. Riptide Slashes and Riptide Flashes triggered by this Constellation effect are not subject to the time intervals that would typically apply to these two Riptide effects, nor do they have any effects on those intervals. |
| C5 |
Havoc: Formless Blade Increases the Level of Havoc: Obliteration by 3. Maximum upgrade level is 15. |
| C6 |
Havoc: Annihilation When Havoc: Obliteration is cast in Melee Stance, the CD of Foul Legacy: Raging Tide is reset. This effect will only take place once Tartaglia returns to his Ranged Stance. |
| Rating | Constellation Effect / Merits | |
|---|---|---|
| C1 | ★★☆ |
• Decreases the cooldown of Tartaglia's Elemental Skill. • Allows you to use Melee Stance in longer periods of time. |
| C6 | ★★☆ |
• Resets the cooldown of Tartaglia's Elemental Skill via Elemental Burst. • Lets Tartaglia use Melee Stance without ever needing to wait. |
While Tartaglia is already complete at C0, having C1 and C6 would make it easier for you to manage his Elemental Skill cooldowns. This can be helpful if you tend to use his Elemental Skill beyond the recommended amount of uptime (10 to 15 seconds).

| Perform up to 6 consecutive shots with a bow.
Charge Attack Perform a more precise Aimed Shot with increased DMG. While aiming, the power of Hydro will accumulate on the arrowhead. An arrow fully charged with the torrent will deal Hydro DMG and apply the Riptide status. Plunge Attack: Fires off a shower of arrows in mid-air before falling and striking the ground, dealing AoE DMG upon impact. When Tartaglia is in Foul Legacy: Raging Tide's Melee Stance, he cannot perform a plunging attack. Riptide Opponents affected by Riptide will suffer from AoE Hydro DMG effects when attacked by Tartaglia in various ways. DMG dealt this way is considered Normal Attack DMG. ・Riptide Flash: A fully-charged Aimed Shot that hits an opponent affected by Riptide deals consecutive bouts of AoE DMG. Can occur once every 0.7s. ・Riptide Burst: Defeating an opponent affected by Riptide creates a Hydro Burst that inflicts the Riptide status on nearby opponents hit. |

The key to maximizing damage with Tartaglia is applying his unique debuff, Riptide.
Enemies hit with Tartaglia's Charged Shots (Bow Stance), Elemental Burst (Bow Stance), and Critical Hits from Normal and Charged Attacks (Melee Stance) will mark opponents with Riptide.
Depending on how Tartaglia triggers the effects of the Riptide mark, Tartaglia will deal additional instances of Hydro DMG.
| Tartaglia's Riptide 101 |
|---|
![]() Riptide Slash: AoE Hydro explosion by hitting an opponent marked with Riptide while on Melee Stance. |
![]() Riptide Burst: Defeating opponents marked with Riptide will unleash an AoE Hydro explosion, which spreads Riptide marks to nearby enemies. |
![]() Riptide Blast: Marked opponents when hit by Tartaglia's Elemental Burst while on Melee Stance triggers an AoE Hydro explosion, but clears the Riptide mark. |
![]() Riptide Flash: Charged Shots on an opponent marked with Riptide will trigger three minor Hydro explosions. |
![]() |
Hitting enemies marked with Riptide will trigger independent instances of Riptide Slashes. This means that all marked enemies in close proximity will unleash a barrage of AoE Hydro DMG, and if defeated, will trigger Riptide Bursts too!
Try to group enemies as much as possible to exponentially increase Tartaglia's DPS. You can easily do this by using Anemo characters with grouping crowd control skills like Kazuha or Sucrose.
| Foul Legacy: Raging Tide |
|---|
| Unleashes a set of weaponry made from pure water, dealing Hydro DMG to surrounding opponents and entering Melee Stance. In this Stance, Tartaglia's Normal and Charged Attacks change as follows:
・Normal Attack: Perform up to 6 consecutive Hydro strikes. ・Charged Attack: Consumes a certain amount of Stamina to unleash a cross slash, dealing Hydro DMG. ・Riptide Slash: Hitting an opponent affected by Riptide with a melee attack unleashes a Riptide Slash that deals AoE Hydro DMG. DMG dealt in this way is considered Elemental Skill SMG, and can only occur once every 1.5s. |
| Attribute | Effect (Lvl 1) |
|---|---|
| Stance Change DMG | 72% |
| 1-Hit DMG | 38.9% |

| Max Duration | 30s |
| Preemptive CD | 6.0 - 36.0s |
| Max CD | 45.0s |

While in melee stance, Tartaglia can close in on enemies and trigger Riptides. However, the longer he remains in melee stance the longer its cooldown becomes, so be sure to swap stances to easily manage his cooldowns.
It is recommended to stay in Melee Stance for around 10-15 seconds at maximum so that your Elemental Skill cooldown would not go beyond 20+ seconds.
This synergizes well with the artifact buff duration of Heart of Depth, and weapon effects of bows like Thundering Pulse.

After unlocking Tartaglia's sixth and final constellation, Havoc: Annihilation, using Tartaglia's melee Elemental Burst will reset his Elemental Skill cooldown.
This can only be done after returning to bow stance, which means your melee stance will always be up after using your melee Elemental Burst.
| Havoc: Obliteration |
|---|
| Performs different attacks based on what stance Tartaglia is when casting.
・Ranged Stance: Flash of Havoc: Swiftly fires a Hydro-imbued magic arrow, dealing AoE Hydro DMG and applying the Riptide status. Returns a portion of its Energy Cost after use. ・Melee Stance: Light of Obliteration: Performs a slash with a large AoE, dealing massive Hydro DMG to all surrounding opponents, which triggers Riptide Blast. ・Riptide Blast: When the obliterating waters hit an opponent affected by Riptide, it clears their Riptide statis and triggers a Hydro Explosion that deals Aoe Hydro DMG. DMG dealt this way is considered Elemental Burst DMG. Flavor Text: Rushing waters are rarely seen in this snowy homeland. Perhaps his ability to command water is due to his understanding of just how precious it is. |
| Attribute | Effect (Lvl 1) |
|---|---|
| Skill DMG: Melee | 464% |
| Skill DMG: Ranged | 378% |
| Riptide Blast DMG | 120% |
| Energy Return (Ranged) | 20 |
| CD | 15.0s |
| Energy Cost | 60 |
Tartaglia's front-loaded Burst is responsible for most of his big damage numbers in showcases, as this can completely decimate entire enemies with the correct set-up.
| Never Ending |
|---|
| Extends Riptide duration by 8s. |
| Master of Weaponry |
|---|
| Increases your own party members' Normal Attack Level by 1. |
| Sword of Torrents |
|---|
| When Tartaglia is in Foul Legacy: Raging Tide's Melee Stance, or if his Normal and Charged Attacks do CRIT DMG, they will apply the Riptide status effect on the hit enemy. |

Tartaglia and other Liyue characters were available in the Version 5.3 Chronicled Wish Banner, which ran from January 21 to February 11, 2025.
