Splatoon is a different kind of competitive-shooter, as it focuses on territory control. The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where evolved squid-human hybrids called Inklings battle for dominance in the city of Inkopolish. You are recruited by a veteran named Captain Cuttlefish to fight off the Octarians, an army of rival octupi who stole the city's power source. During Turf War, the game's main multiplayer mode, the goal is to coat as much of the ground as possible with your team's color ink before the three-minutes are up. It's one of Nintendo's more unique spin to an existing genre.

Often called "Smash 4" or "Sm4sh" by the fans, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is technically the 5th game in the series if the 3DS counterpart is treated as a separate entry. True to the series form, this entry further expanded the Smash Bros. roster with many reps coming from both first party Nintendo titles, and 3rd party titles. In addition to the large base roster, this game was the first in the series to introduce DLC content, in the form of new characters. Smash 4 also further upped the chaotic nature of gameplay with the addition of 8-Player smash, a plethora of new items, and new game modes, as well as an online mode that allowed you to choose between a more competitive oriented mode ("For Glory"), and the more casual and party oriented mode the game is more widely known for ("For Fun").

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD is a remastered version of the Gamecube classic, offering beautiful improved graphics, integration of Gamepad controls, and several improvements to the gameplay which made it an easier starting point for newcomers to the series. The story of the Wind Waker is a classic tale that sees Link, a somewhat lazy boy living on Outset Island, take up the mantle of Hero of the Winds on a grand journey across the Great Sea to rescue his sister Aryll and save the world from the forces of evil. The Gamepad was implemented to allow for easy aiming with gyropscopic controls, quicker access to item equipment via the touch screen, as well as a map that could be easily viewed from the Gamepad screen. Many of the complaints of the original game, such as slow pacing when traveling the Great Sea, were address with the introduction of the Swift Sail, as well as streamlining of the Triforce Hunt Quest. These changes make the game extremely accessible, to the point where many would consider it to be the definitive version of the game.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD is a remaster of the beloved Gamecube / Wii title, offering higher resolution graphics, gamepad touch controls, as well as several Quality of Life changes. While most of the core gameplay remains the same as the original, some changes were made to streamline the gameplay, as well as the new Cave of Shadows, a gauntlet style dungeon, similar to the Cave of Ordeals, where you fight floor after floor of enemies as Wolf Link. Twilight Princess HD offers a rich and somewhat dark story, based around Link defending Hyrule from the invasion of a myserious dimension known as the Twilight Realm. Several uses of the Gamepad that were used in Wind Waker HD, such as gyroscopic aiming, touch screen item equipping, as well as easier access to the map, were all brought to this version of the game, breathing life into the classic Zelda title and making it even easier to access for newcomers.

Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate follows a gameplay loop that's similar to other Monster Hunter games: take quest, kill beasts, carve up their remains, and make cool gear. Yoou start out as a rookie from the Hunter's Guild tasked with protecting a fishing village from an impending Elder Dragon attack, which eventually snowballs into tackling a massive roster of land and sea creatures. This entry is famous, and somewhat infamous, for its underwater combat. Players back then, though, criticized the mechanic, as it made fighting monsters slower than normal. As with many Monster Hunter games, it has a learning curve, but finally taking down a monster that has been beating you up for an hour is easily one of the more satisfying loops in gaming.

As a sequel to Monster Hunter 3 it was really fun. The feel of the weapon I was using had changed, so I only played up to clearing the story, but the graphics were good, and even though it was a bit heavy, it was my first Monster Hunter you could play on a handheld screen, so I enjoyed it.

Originally released for the Wii U in 2013, LEGO City Undercover is the LEGO franchise's first open-world video game entry. It follows a police officer named Chase McCain who must find Rex Fury, a hardened criminal who recently escaped from detention. As Chase McCain, players will be tasked with exploring the 20 districts of LEGO City through exciting vehicle-based missions, facing criminals, and hunting down collectibles. LEGO City Undercover's open-world gameplay is accompanied by a 15-chapter story highlighting Chase's main mission. LEGO City Undercover allows up to 2 players via local co-op.

I thought it'd be the usual game for little kids where you play a police officer investigating cases, but it has a classic movie-like story with some chuckle-worthy moments mixed in. The Wii U GamePad isn't just a big controller, it properly functions as a device you use in investigations, making the most of the hardware, which is a fun memory.
