Pokemon Devs Game Freak, Adds Freaky Stats to New Game, Ame Nochi Hare Onna

Image

Ame Nochi Hare Onna turns real-world weather and laundry into gameplay. Here's everything revealed about its gameplay during its TGS 2026 broadcast.

Ame Nochi Hare Onna Brings Real-World Weather Into Its Magical World

Laundry Game Where the Real Weather Affects Your Gameplay

Image

Ame Nochi Hare Onna was announced on September 14 and received a special program during TGS 2026, where the developers showcased the game's concept, gameplay, and development details. At its core, Ame Nochi Hare Onna is described as a "laundry game" that incorporates real-time weather forecasts in Japan through Weathernews Inc. (WNI), one of the world's largest private weather service companies.

The game's weather is directly tied to real weather, meaning the weather in each region corresponds to the actual weather in that area. Players can then patrol different areas, battle enemies, clean up garbage, and work toward bringing a little more brightness into the world!

Weather also plays a significant role in the game's characters and magic. Characters have an affinity toward specific types of weather, with the protagonist, for example, being described as a sunny girl. When the in-game weather matches a character's affinity, they become stronger.

This also gives players a reason to keep an eye on the weather beyond their current location. If it's sunny in one region but raining in another, a character with a sunny affinity can travel to the sunny region to take advantage of the weather and become stronger. The same applies to characters with other weather affinities, encouraging players to check forecasts across different regions and plan where they want to go accordingly. In doing so, Ame Nochi Hare Onna's real-time weather system naturally encourages players to become more familiar with weather conditions beyond their own area.

Kumorin Companions Add Another Layer of Affinity

Image

Characters also have a magical companion called Kumorin, a playful name derived from kumori, the Japanese word for cloudy weather, turned into a nickname. Each Kumorin also has different "Freak" stats, adding another layer to how characters are differentiated.

So far, the broadcast has introduced Laundry Freak, Apparel Freak, and Travel Freak affinities. If we were to make a Pokémon comparison, these could potentially function somewhat like types, giving characters different specialties and making the Freak system another factor to consider. The exact extent of how these affinities affect gameplay remains something to watch as more details are revealed.

Patrol, Battle, Get Dirty, and Do the Laundry

The main gameplay loop appears to revolve around patrolling different areas, engaging in turn-based battles, and then dealing with the aftermath: dirty clothes. Clothing is tied to the characters' stats, so after getting dirty from battle, players will need to do some laundry to keep their clothes in shape. Thankfully, players aren't limited to returning home every time they need a wash, as a truck equipped with a washing machine allows for portable laundry while out on patrol.

Battles themselves are turn-based, with an interface that may look immediately familiar to Pokémon players. The battle screen features four moves to choose from, though the broadcast did not provide enough in-depth gameplay footage to determine how the combat system actually works at the time of writing. There may be more to the system beyond its familiar-looking interface, but we'll have to wait for more details.

Dress for the Weather

Clothing is a major part of the gameplay loop too, with different outfits having their own stats and "jobs." What you wear can also trigger transformations, making your choice of attire more than just cosmetic. Players will need to consider the weather when deciding what to wear, adding another layer of strategy to the game's real-time weather system.

Of course, all that adventuring comes with a cost. Clothes get soiled after battles, and they will also need to be washed if you keep wearing them repeatedly. That reinforces that doing laundry is a regular part of the gameplay loop. Weather even affects the laundry itself, with clothes drying faster when the weather is sunny.

Image

The weather system can also tie into the game's community features. If you know it's raining in a friend's area, for example, you can help by moving their clothes somewhere safe from the rain. It's a small but charming way of turning the game's real-world weather system into something players can interact with together.

From Checking the Forecast to Making a Game

Image

According to the developers, the idea for Ame Nochi Hare Onna came from something as simple as checking the weather before doing the laundry. This everyday habit sparked the idea of turning the relationship between laundry and weather into a game, eventually becoming the unique concept behind Ame Nochi Hare Onna.

The developers also shared that, with rainy weather becoming increasingly frequent in Japan, they wanted to create something that could bring smiles to people's faces. That sentiment seems to be reflected throughout the game, from its sunny protagonist and weather-based gameplay to the simple act of helping a friend's laundry stay dry.

Ame Nochi Hare Onna is coming this winter and is now available for pre-registration. For more information about its release date and time, check out our article below
