Can Game Freak’s Ame Nochi Hare Onna Be Good? What the Talent Behind It Reveals

Image

Is Game Freak's Ame Nochi Hare Onna just a weather gimmick? Discover how Pokémon's Ken Sugimori, Weathernews, and top idol artists could be building a live-service hit.

Can Game Freak’s Ame Nochi Hare Onna Be Good?

Image

Game Freak recently unveiled Ame Nochi Hare Onna (no official English title yet, as there's no Global release announced thus far) during Tokyo Game Show, a free-to-play mobile title coming after Beast of Reincarnation where real-world weather becomes part of the gameplay.

Integrating real-time meteorological data into a daily gameplay loop is the kind of out-of-the-box design Game Freak’s Gear Project Initiative was built to foster. In practice, however, marrying live weather integration with a mobile live-service model is an ambitious technical challenge.

If the game is to succeed, Game Freak must move beyond high-concept novelty. It comes as little surprise, then, that they’ve tapped a diverse lineup of creators, studios, and an actual weather institute to pull it off.

Weathernews Inc. Will Provide the Weather Forecasting Data

Image

Of course, if Game Freak is to design a game that changes based on the actual weather, they need a reliable source to pull that information from. Enter Weathernews Inc., Japan’s prominent weather forecasting and meteorological information company. They will provide the necessary data to keep the project running in as accurate an experience as possible to real life.

In fact, Game Freak’s announcement livestream was held in Weathernews Inc.’s studio and even had a small segment for the general weather forecast.

This collaboration seems more than just a gimmick. It grounds the game directly in the player's daily life. By plugging Weathernews’ real-time forecast into the game's core systems, a player's real life experience directly dictates the events and challenges they encounter in-game.

Development Infrastructure Heavyweight Chronogate Leads Game Production

If Ame Nochi Hare Onna’s unusual premise has you wondering whether all these ideas can actually come together, there’s a good reason to have some faith in the team behind it.

Developer Chronogate has previously worked on some recognizable titles, including Aster Tatariqus, TRIBE NINE, Kaiju No. 8, and Pokemon Champions. It gives Ame Nochi Hare Onna some serious talent to back up its ambitious concept.

Considering the unusual ideas being put together, having a developer with experience across these projects gives us a lot of reasons to be optimistic.

Gakuen IDOLM@STER Artist Aki Minamino Brings the Main Characters to Life

Image

Few genres excel at creating distinct, vibrant personalities within a shared aesthetic quite like idol media. Hence, tapping into Aki Minamino, whose recent work on Gakuen iDOLM@STER has been widely praised, to design the main cast is nothing short of brilliant. Their characters exude personality and uniqueness without having to budge an inch on the screen.

Take the design for Himawari, for example. Without even understanding anything on her profile, you’d know that she’s the type of girl who always brings the emotional kind of sunshine to those around her. Izu, too, matches her weather of rain perfectly, appearing rather stiff and gloomy without being depressing or flat.

These are the kinds of character designs meant to sustain a long live-service lifespan. Minamino gives players a compelling visual reason to remember the cast, ensuring that logging in regularly feels more like a daily treat than a chore.

Game Freak’s Own Kyoko Abe Adds the Studio’s Signature Mascot Touch

Image

Drawing on decades of experience shaping the iconic creatures of Pokémon, Game Freak knows how to craft cute, instantly recognizable mascots better than almost anyone. Bringing in studio veteran Kyoko Abe, who has designed for the company since Generation VII, is a natural move that grounds the game's broader artistic pivot with their signature touch.

This can be plainly seen through their Kumorin designs in Pon, Kon, and Chuchu. Chuchu, for example, wonderfully reflects their partner Izu’s affinity for rain by taking the shape of a classic teru teru bozu—a small doll people hang outside to wish for good weather.

Legendary Illustrator Ken Sugimori Pitches in With a Traveling Washing Machine

Image

Of course, what’s a high-effort Game Freak title without the one and only Ken Sugimori, the legendary illustrator and original character designer for the Pokémon franchise?

Sure, the stream only showcased one “character” he designed: the Sentakki Machine (basically, the Washing Machine Machine), which is essentially just a laundromat on wheels. But that single piece of artwork exemplifies exactly why his designs have remained so popular.

It’s distinct, eye-catching, subtly ridiculous, and looks like it was designed to leave a lasting impression rather than actually be useful.

Will the Forecast Hold Up?

Image

It’s tough to directly answer whether or not Ame Nochi Hare Onna will actually be good. After all, we only have the concept to look at. However, the pedigree of the talent involved in the project speaks volumes about Game Freak’s ambitions and commitment to it.

It feels unlikely that they’re simply designing a game for you to cram into your congested free time. It feels more like they’re assembling a cast of creators capable of producing an experience that becomes part of the excitement of everyday life instead. Now, we just have to wait to see if the actual gameplay can weather the storm.

And it likely can.
