Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the awaited sequel to melee with a surprisingly lengthy and fun story mode called "Subspace Emissary". Compared to Melee, Brawl is slower, floatier, and introduced a controversial mechanic where you have a 1% chance of tripping and being vulnerable. It is a lot of people's entry to the Smash games. What's crazier is it is probably one of the first crossover games with Sonic and Snake being playable characters

The trade-off for being the least competitively inclined game in the series is having the best single-player content in Subspace Emissary, which is something I hope to see in the next Smash game if and when it comes out. I had tons of fun playing casually with friends as well.

Lucas / 20s / Male

My first Smash Bros. game, and it was just endless joy. I learned more about Nintendo's vast array of games and characters through it and had a lot of fun playing it with friends and family.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate features one of the most ambitious crossovers, with playable characters spanning across multiple in-game universes. The core gameplay loop is simple, revolving around a platform-based fighting game mechanic, but the intricacies of all the characters make for an amazing experience, regardless of skill level.

With 87 playable characters, it's overwhelming as a fighting game. Every character has a clear strength, and there are moments where each is fun to use. Non-Nintendo characters join the roster too, and they're all highly faithful to their originals. The BGM also uses the original games' tracks and arranged versions, making it a lineup that fans of each series will be happy with.

かわしぃ / 20代 / 男性

As the latest entry in the Smash Bros. series currently out, its appeal is above all the sheer number of characters. If you go all-in on serious competition, it's tough because you need counters for every single character, but since it's marketed as a fun party game, I think that's part of what makes it the best game.

Super Mario 64 is an N64 classic that brought Mario to the 3D world. While Mario is still largely most known for its 2D sidescrolling platformers, Super Mario 64 showed how well it could bring platforming to the 3D space as well. The game is known for its interesting hat mechanics that change how you maneuver the 3D space. We can't forget the amazing, memorable, and nostalgic soundtrack that it comes with. Whenever Mario 64 comes to mind, the Bob-omb Battlefield stage theme will never fail to be an ear worm.

Survey voice

If someone asks "what game did you like back in the day?", this is the one that comes to mind for now. The music and graphics are carved into my brain too deeply, to the point I no longer really understand what's even fun about it. As a kid you basically have few chances to get new games, so I must have had no choice but to squeeze every drop out of this game right in front of me. Therefore it might just be an infinitely high nostalgia bias.

Kevin

Even though it's called the world's first fully 3D adventure game, it's still fun today; it has rough parts, but I feel those as charm points. Personally, I really love searching a wide stage for a Star with only a "hint" and no idea where it is, which fits perfectly with the design that lets you go anywhere on the stage. I also love the slightly homely Mario and Bowser.

Set as the prequel to the entire Metal Gear series, experience the origin of the legendary Big Boss through Naked Snake’s first mission in the series located in Soviet forests of the 1960s. Armed with only a knife and a tranquilizer, Snake must survive in the forest, infiltrate and sabotage a secret superweapon project, and eliminate his own mentor who has defected, in this tactical-espionage mission.

I enjoyed sneaking into different areas and eating animals to increase your stamina. It was really fun messing with the soldiers, like placing a magazine on the floor and slowly sneaking up behind them to either kill or incapacitate them. The story was good and I had a lot of playthroughs with the game.

Noel / 30s / Male

One of Hideo Kojima's best. An effective stealth game with a good anti-war message, lots of references to film and TV, an absurd sense of humor, and very memorable characters and dramatic plot points that make the experience kind of unforgettable.

I would say this is currently the premier NS2 game I would recommend for anyone with a Switch 2 to play. While a game like Pokopia is fun, I could argue its fairly similar, and is just a better Animal Crossing. Donkey Kong Bananza is truly a game that is unlike any other game I've ever seen or played before. It's super unique and also really fun to just bash through everything. It's also extremely satisfying to complete, and its DLC is often forgotten about releasing so far from its base game but the introduction of a roguelite element is also a really fun twist to test your skills. Wonderful game!

Kevin

The stages have rich, distinct character, and exploring is fun the whole way through. The bonus stages are enjoyable and reminded me of the bonus stages in Donkey Kong Country. Personally I wasn't a big fan of the stage-destroying gimmick, but I'm glad it's there. The final boss and the ending are superb. I want a sequel!

Arguably the greatest sendoff to the saga of Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid 4 is a last hurrah for the legendary video game hero, portraying him as a grizzled soldier aged prematurely by genetic circumstance. Positing a future world where possibility is choked off by an exploitative war economy, Metal Gear Solid 4 pits Snake against his past and present one last time and brings a close to the long story of Big Boss and his progeny. It's also a showcase of excellent stealth gameplay and hyper-detailed mechanics that matches the ultimate soldier against cyborgs, genetically enhanced warriors and massive mecha bent on reshaping the world.

You can enjoy it in stealth missions, and you can also brute-force it in an aim showdown, which is nice for changing how you play. The story is interesting too, but you have to know the series, so opinions will probably be divided. The fusion of realism and near-future feel is an exquisite balance and very good (things like the digitization of war and weapons). Also, the online was a god-tier game. I got hooked enough to grind into the two-digit world rankings. It properly kept MGS's world while maintaining a balance you could grind. A game that became my gateway to getting into the FPS/TPS genre.

The fourth numbered entry in the Metal Gear series created by director Kojima and others who were once at Konami, a work where the series' complex story foreshadowing was paid off and the story more or less concluded. The series' mysteries are revealed, and it was an irresistible experience for series fans. However, perhaps to wrap up an overextended story, there are extremely many cutscene events, and nearly the whole thing is cutscenes, to the point that you can play a bit of game as a bonus, so that one point I thought was a downside.

Super Smash Bros. Melee was the follow up to the original N64 title, launching shortly after the GameCube's launch, and quickly become a system seller, and a must-own game for the console. Despite its relatively short development cycle, Melee took everything great about the original entry on the N64 and made it bigger; the game featured a larger roster of both starting characters and characters that could be unlocked by meeting various conditions. The game also contained three story modes: Classic, Adventure, and All-Star (which was unlocked only after obtaining all characters). Additionally, the game added various bonus modes for play, such as Event Matches, Home Run Contest, and Multi Man Melee. However, the heart of Super Smash Bros. Melee was its Versus mode, where you could engage in battles with up to four players (human or CPU), and take advantage of various different rulesets to vary the type of matches you play. This included choosing between stock, time, or coin battles, free-for-all or team battles, as well as toggling on and off a multitude of items. On that note, Melee greatly expanded the list of items and stages available for play greatly from its predecessor, and with the addition of Special Melee, which allowed for unique matches like Giant Melee and Metal Melee among others, battles could be as chaotic or controlled as you wanted them to be. Super Smash Bros. Melee was a game enjoyed by casual gamers and more hard core competitive gamers alike. The game quickly formed a strong grassroots community of competitors that use specialized rulesets for a style of gameplay that is highly skill-based, and makes use of many hidden techniques and combos to optimize each characters' ability. This community continues to hold tournaments and bring in new followers even to this day, cementing the legacy of Super Smash Bros. Melee as one of the most important entries to the series, and perhaps one of the most important Nintendo games of all time.

Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy expounds on what made the original Dissidia great, and amps it up to 12 (pun intended) with some more fan-favorite characters added to the roster. This version also features addition of the Assist system, providing even more openings for combos and utility in a battle by pairing a character with an off-field character that can be summoned on occasion. The plot of Dissidia also gets a further expansion, showing what happened in the 12th cycle before the final one that happens in the original Dissidia. It also gives more endgame content, like a new Superboss at the end of an optional story, and more customization in additional skins for each character.

Even though I tend to be pretty bad at fighting games, Dissidia has such a good story that I played it for endless hours anyway. Even though I knew almost none of the characters at the time due to having only played Crisis Core and FF4, each of the characters had great stories. I'm really looking forward to replaying it one of these days now that I've played more of the mainline games.

The Mario franchise pivots to space and sends the plucky plumber careening though the stars and among unique, tiny planets in search of power stars to rescue Princess Peach and aid new companion Rosalina. The game's cosmic theme and unique environments and stage structure reemphasizes why Mario games feel like such wondrous experiences, and carries forward the pioneering spirit of N64 classics like Super Mario 64.

Survey voice

Jori / 40s / Male

I love how the game starts in a simple, almost cozy way, then suddenly expands into space where everything becomes unpredictable. Planets are tiny worlds with their own gravity, and every stage feels like a new idea instead of just another level. What really stands out to me is the sense of wonder. I am constantly being surprised by how movement works, how gravity shifts, and how I can run upside down or launch from one planet to another. It never stops feeling fresh, even when I understand the mechanics. I also appreciate how smooth and controlled it feels despite the chaos of space. Even when the camera and gravity are doing wild things, the movement still feels tight and responsive, like I can always trust Mario no matter what is happening around him. And then there is the music. It adds so much emotion and scale to everything I do. Even simple platforming feels important because the soundtrack makes it feel like I am part of something huge and beautiful.

Kevin

Honestly I prefer 64 and Sunshine, which have more freedom in exploration, but the mission design is certainly good, and it delivers Wii-era top-level graphics and music, so Super Mario Galaxy really is indispensable for the Wii.

Hollow Knight: Silksong is the long-awaited sequel to Team Cherry’s critically acclaimed Metroidvania, Hollow Knight. Developed over seven years by the three‑person studio, the exploration-driven 2D platformer places players in the role of Hornet, The Knight’s sister figure, clad in her signature red cloak and armed with her Needle. She must "Hegale! Shaw!" her way through the silk-ruled kingdom of Pharloom against more than 150 new enemies and ascend toward the Citadel at the summit. Combat emphasizes agility and faster tempo, delivering a more acrobatic experience than its predecessor. Silksong has firmly established itself as one of the most celebrated indie sequels, to the point that its immense player anticipation caused multiple games to delay their September 2025 launches. It went on to win 2025's The Game Award for Best Action/Adventure, as well as earning the Game of the Year and Best Game You Suck At recognitions at the 2025 Steam Awards.

A stunning Metroidvania that evolved even further from the previous work. Honestly I can't believe a work of this quality is out as an indie game in the 2,000-yen range. This time the protagonist finally speaks, and dialogue scenes and event direction increased greatly. Thanks to that, the flow of the story became much easier to grasp too. And Hornet has a very strong presence and appeal as a protagonist. Her bearing, lines, and fighting style all have personality, and you naturally get drawn in while playing. What's especially wonderful is how the boss-fight direction and the BGM mesh. Some battles are so polished you'd think, "maybe the song was made first, and the boss fight was designed to match it." Personally, the ones that especially stuck with me were Trobbio and the Cogwork Dancers. On the other hand, I felt there are quite a few problems with the difficulty-curve design. Rather than simply having bite, there are conspicuous parts designed to intentionally torment the player or make them feel it's unfair. On top of that, the rewards for defeating bosses are too small, so I was also bothered by the early game's difficulty being quite high. That said, by the time you reach the third act, I think many players will forgive even those complaints. That's just how much overwhelming passion and appeal this work has.

Isa / 20s / Female

Silksong is a game that I've waited for many years now, and it had lived up to its expectations. The only reason why it isn't in my top spot, is because there were many games that I've played since that were equally as good, but touched me in the heart more just a little bit more. However, that doesn't make Silksong any less of an amazing experience.

Super Smash Bros. was still a bit rough around the edges on the Nintendo 64, but it was the game that both introduced and defined the platform fighter genre. Up to 4 players can battle in furious free-for-alls, where the more damage they take, the farther their characters get knocked back on each hit, until they're eventually knocked flying off the map. With 12 characters available, it doesn't have the massive roster of future installments, but the Nintendo staples like Mario, Link, Fox, and Samus are all here. Characters also feel a bit heavier akin to Melee, and stages are small, so the combat offers a different experience than later games in the series, limitations and all.

It's not easy to make an interactive sandbox that can be so satisfying to explore and test the limits of. Super Mario Odyssey provides a wonderful environment to do it in. In this game, Mario meets Cappy and gains the ability to possess frogs, statues, lamp posts, and well, anything that can wear a hat. Each capture unlocks new abilities and lets you see the world in a new lens. Let your curiosity guide you and you'll hop, skip, and jump yourself into places you didn't even know you could reach to be rewarded with Moons and Coins, that will, in turn, be used to unlock more kingdoms to explore. The gameplay loop rewards you with adventure after adventure truly deserving of being called an Odyssey.

I am a Nintendo Glazer through and through but Odyssey is a masterpiece among 3d platformers. Cappy's capture mechanic is delightfully enjoyable and Mario's fluidity is among the best of Mario Games, with only Mario Wonder coming close in recent years. Always solid work from this team.

Asassins Creed 2 is an action-adventure game that follows Desmond Miles' ancestor, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, as the latter seeks revenge for the death of his father and brothers. The game is set 15th-century Italy during the Renaissance featuring explorable cities in an open-world format. It followed two direct sequels, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood and Assassin's Creed: Revelations, exploring Ezio's later adventures in Rome and Constantinople. It has also set the gameplay standards for succeeding Assassin's Creed games before the series' soft reboot and shift to action-RPG starting with Assassin's Creed: Origins.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards is well-known for its mechanic of combining two powers to create a brand new power, leading to a huge variety of possible combinations, including some quirky but surprisingly powerful options like a Refrigerator (Ice + Spark) which spawns healing items. Kirby 64 follows previous games as a 2D sidescrolling platformer, unlike other games of the generation which made the jump to full 3D exploration, but the levels feature rotating and curving areas that still give the feeling of adventuring in a 3D world. With the addition of the Crystal Shards themselves as a collectible found throughout the levels, the game encourages players to try a variety of different powers and think creatively to figure out how to collect them all.

There are surreal ones too, like ice + electricity making a refrigerator that attacks with food, and it makes you want to check and experiment with every combination. Surely a huge improvement from its predecessor, new mechanics have also been added here such as Rage, where once you get to at least 5% HP, your attacks will start to hurt more. Metal Gear Solid introduced the gaming world to one of its most iconic heroes in the form of Solid Snake, and his confrontation with Liquid Snake and his minions on Shadow Moses is a timeless bit of gaming history, as are his battles against foes like Psycho Mantis, who went so far as to take insights from a player's PlayStation save data to attempt to rattle their resolve. After almost 20 years without a new entry in the series, Metroid Dread reminds everyone why an entire subgenre of platformers is named after this franchise. Play as Samus, the legendary bounty hunter, on yet another planetary expedition with unmatched mechanical polish and a gratifyingly fluid combat system that really makes it feel like nothing can stand in your way. There's nothing quite like starting from outrunning the tense pursuit of an E.M.M.I., only to master the movement well-enough to run circles it instead. An innovation and a classic at the same time, this 2021 Game Awards nominee reminds us that a game doesn't need 60+ hours long to deliver an outstanding experience.

This is the game that changed my stance on longer-games being better. Up to this point I had always believed that a game should last as many hours as its dollar price. But despite being a game you can speedrun in 4 hours, it is well-worth the 60 USD and the replayability for skill expression is also really high. Highly polished game with satisfying platforming and combat.

You could call it the evolution of Super Mario 64. The sluggish jump motion compared to Mario is a weakness, but Banjo and Kazooie, equipped with many movement techniques, make up for it plenty. Instead of a difficult whip-wielding Belmont, you play as the sexy, stylish, long-haired son of Dracula: Alucard. Symphony of the Night introduced a massive interconnected map and RPG mechanics to your usual Castlevania game. This is what put the "vania" in Metroidvania. The game also has hilariously campy, and cheesy and yet iconic voice acting in this game. This game aged like fine wine and would still match up to modern games of the genre.

Despite being a relatively well-known series within Japan, the Mystical Ninja series (or "Ganbare Goemon" as it's known in Japan) has always been somewhat niche outside of its home country, only seeing a handful of international releases. Of these releases, Mystical Ninja: Starring Goemon for the N64 is perhaps the most well known of the bunch. The title involves the somewhat wacky adventure of Goemon and his pals as the travel across a feudal and fantasy Japan in order to stop a theater gang known as the Peach Mountain Shoguns from turning Japan into a large stage for their performing arts. Despite debuing a year before The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the game was rather innovative for the then just emerging genre of 3D action adventure games, and contained gameplay such as dungeon crawling, 3D boss fights, and character upgrades through new weapons and abilities, elements which would become hallmarks of the series.

Mega Man Zero is a fast-paced, hack-and-slash platformer that leaves almost no room for mistakes. It is notorious for its difficulty, especially for beginners who are still learning the ropes. The screen is too zoomed-in compared to other platformers, your early-game tools and combat options are scarce, and your health bar is not usually enough to survive more than 3 hits in a boss fight. However, it is the kind of game where putting in the effort is VERY rewarding. Once you take the time to master the mechanics and utilize the tools given to you through progression, the tables completely turn, making Zero the actual boss of every boss fight.

Yoshi's Island was also labeled as Super Mario World 2 on release, and although it differs in every way from Super Mario World 1, it doesn't back down from the expectations set by the Mario series. In the first Yoshi platformer, players will play as not one Yoshi, but an entire island of Yoshis who pass Baby Mario between them each level. Baby Mario has barely evaded capture from Bowser's henchman Kamek, and the Yoshis must band together to rescue his captured brother Baby Luigi, all with Baby Mario on their backs. When Yoshi takes damage, Baby Mario will float off in a bubble, and Yoshi must chase after to rescue him; if time runs out, Kamek's flunkies will kidnap Baby Mario and you'll lose a life. Yoshi's Island set itself apart with its storybook aesthetic, a memorable soundtrack (that final boss theme), and a surprising amount of content for a SNES platformer with 54 complete levels.

Yakuza 3 is the most unique entry in the Like a Dragon franchise. - The original work of "Like a Dragon: Kiwami 3," released in February 2026 - You can feel a different appeal from past works in Kiryu as he devotes himself to caring for the children as the caretaker of an orphanage in Okinawa - Some characters have their voice actors/designs changed, and personally I prefer the original. The graphics of characters like Mine and Kanda are also better in the original. The remake's facial modeling gives a slightly softer impression and lacks impact - The setting of the mysterious man who becomes the key to this game's story felt strongly like an afterthought and was disappointing, but otherwise it was an Okinawa-flavored story revolving around vested interests in base expansion and resort development

Often called "Smash 4" or "Sm4sh" by the fans, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is technically the 5th game in the series if the 3DS counterpart is treated as a separate entry. True to the series form, this entry further expanded the Smash Bros. roster with many reps coming from both first party Nintendo titles, and 3rd party titles. In addition to the large base roster, this game was the first in the series to introduce DLC content, in the form of new characters. Smash 4 also further upped the chaotic nature of gameplay with the addition of 8-Player smash, a plethora of new items, and new game modes, as well as an online mode that allowed you to choose between a more competitive oriented mode ("For Glory"), and the more casual and party oriented mode the game is more widely known for ("For Fun").

After Mystical Ninja: Starring Goemon, the other "Ganbare Goemon" game for N64, saw relative success outside of Japan, Goemon's Great Adventure was the next (and final) game of the series to make it abroad. While the characters and humor would be familiar to anyone who played the previous entry, the story itself was not a direct sequel, this time centering around a villain named Bisumaru trying to resurrect a demon prince, and Goemon and his pals attempting to stop them. The gameplay was also totally different than the previous entry, featuring a 2.5D Side-Scrolling playstyle, with levels selected from an overworld map, similar to older Mario games. Additionally, levels can lead to different routes on the map, and clearing levels earns you entry passes, which are needed to progress further in the game. This game also has co-op play, allowing you to choose between four characters by swapping within tea shops. Each character is unique in which weapons they use, as well as their secondary ability. With entry passes earned through both level completion as well as various side quests found in towns, the game offers plenty terms of content for 100% completion.

Dishonored is more than just a violent stealth game; it was a redefinition of the stealth-action genre, allowing players to execute the most creative approaches to clearing a level. The game puts you in the shoes of Corvo Attano, the disgraced royal protector turned vigilante assassin for the Loyalist Conspiracy. Assassin is a term that can be used depending on how every player approaches their playthrough, as we can quickly learn that the best outcomes often come from the most creative approaches. Dishonored hammers down the lesson “Actions have consequences” through how your allies and the world react to your playstyle. As you progress through each level, leaving or not leaving piles of enemy corpses in your wake, the world changes alongside your choices, transforming into a grim reminder of your violent actions or a reflection of your efforts to maintain the moral high ground. Perhaps the greatest strength of the game is the freedom it provides to players and the proof that the stealth-action genre does not necessarily mean stealth-violence.

Naruto: Gekito Ninja Taisen! 2 brings back the feeling of those classic GameCube nights. The action is fast, smooth, and a lot of fun. The game covers the early Naruto storylines and turns them into exciting 3D battles, with each character playing just like they do in the anime. With more characters to choose from and a 4-player mode, it’s the kind of fighting game you can play with friends for hours without realizing how much time has passed. It’s easy to start playing, but there’s a lot to learn if you want to get really good. Plus, it has that nostalgia boost that made the early Naruto games so much fun.

Rayman 2: The Great Escape takes Rayman into a new dimension as a 3D platformer, and fully dedicates to it with 360 degrees of traversal. Although levels are more linear than the collectible-heavy games of the era, the traversal is deep, as players will dive down into the depths of a lake to rescue a trapped whale, fly up through the caverns of a lava dungeon using Rayman's hair as a helicopter, and more across over 20 levels through varied landscapes. Rayman 2's art design brings together different elements for a unique concoction, with one foot firmly in the "dark fairy tale" realm, but with mechanical elements mixed in via the Robot Pirate antagonists. The setting could make for some surprisingly dark turns, like when a cutscene shows the grand total of 1000 Lums – fairies which Rayman rescues throughout the game – decrease to 999 after the Robot Pirate captain Admiral Razorbeard decides to try one as a snack.

Super Mario 3D World expands on the gameplay introduced in the previous title Super Mario 3D Land for the 3DS. Often overlooked due to the high status of other 3D Mario titles, as well as being a Wii U title, Super Mario 3D World is a charming and entertaining title, which combines elements of both the 3D Mario titles, as well as the more traditional 2D ones. Additionally, the game allows for co-op gameplay of up to four players, making it a great choice for groups of friends who want something more fulfilling than a party game.
