Pokemon Emerald is the third in the trilogy for the initial Game Boy Advance Pokemon games, combining Ruby and Sapphire's Hoenn adventure with a new, combined story. It also has an endgame challenge in the Battle Frontier, giving players a better experience outside of the story. Due to the complete Hoenn journey involving both villain teams and an expanded postgame, it is the recommended version for Pokemon's Generation III Hoenn games.

Whlie Sapphire was my first Pokemon game, it was a bootleg version that corrupted itself later on. I was given a copy of Emerald one Christmas and it was the first Pokemon game I finished. It set the bar high for what I would want a Pokemon game to be. That game helped me make friends, improve as an artist, and appreciate video games even more. Truly a timeless entry in the series.

Zam / 20s / Male

Another perfect game for me. I don't think there's much to say about this game that hasn't been echoed repeatedly. One fun fact though is that I caught all the Legendaries in this game with regular Pokeballs.

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is widely regarded as one of the greatest entries in the franchise. Packed with hundreds of quests, an enormous monster roster, and brutally satisfying G-Rank hunts, it captures everything that made classic Monster Hunter so addictive: a game where every hard-fought victory feels like a genuine accomplishment. The combat is deliberate and unforgiving. Every mistake is punishable, and every successful hunt feels earned. Combine this with local multiplayer, and it transforms the experience to unforgettable co-op memories with friends. Monster Hunter Freedom Unite remains one of the most beloved entried in the series and a benchmark for classic Monster Hunter.

- Probably the single work that spread "Monster Hunter's" popularity - Making the high hurdle of multiplayer, which was hard on the PS2, easy to play on the PSP was the biggest factor in its spread - The number of monsters and abundance of weapon types made it very rewarding to grind - Above all, "let's go on a hunt!" with friends was the ultimate fun - A gem of a masterpiece that let you taste the fun of playing with friends more than you can now

Ronald / 20s / Male

My very first Monster Hunter game and the one that introduced me to the series. I have a lot of memories with this game, especially how difficult yet rewarding it was whenever you built better gear as you progressed through the game. I used to play this a lot with my friends and relatives, and it would take up the whole day.

Elden Ring is the epic love child of FromSoftware, the game developer that is hell-bent on making players turn their controllers into projectiles, and George R.R. Martin, the author who has a knack for creating beloved characters who ultimately meet their end after three chapters. You take on the role of the Tarnished, and you will venture forth through the harsh and unforgiving world of The Lands Between. Players will helm both sword and shield as they weather the landscape of battle unleashed by the gods and their kin. The game is the very definition of sheer will, as it constantly tests players' mettle through the usual soulslike difficulty expected from FromSoftware. Explore the vast reaches of the game's open world, defeat numerous foes and demigods in battle, and strive to become the Elden Lord.

An open-world action RPG etched into gaming history, the finest of the 21st century. Despite its overwhelming difficulty, it has an addictiveness that makes you want to challenge tough enemies again and again, and the sense of accomplishment the moment you win is an appeal you can rarely taste in other games. On top of an enormous amount of content, it also features highly free character building through diverse builds, boasting a level of polish that lets you keep playing for hundreds of hours. The DLC adds new weapons, areas, and bosses, letting you enjoy a new adventure with a volume rivaling the main game. The breadth of exploration and build-building expands even further, and it has the appeal of keeping you playing long after clearing it.

The only game that I've ever played that I'd call a "true open-world". It always amazed me how after the tutorial, you're free to do whatever... enter Caelid underleved, fight the Tree Sentinel with beginner equipment, or just simply explore. Despite the difficulty, none of the fights ever felt unfair (except for Consort Radahn...), and every inch of exploration felt marvel. Also, unironically, this game made me feel fear no other games have done before. The fear of the unknown, fear of death, it was crazy feeling all sorts of emotions when I was playing this game.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a tactical story-rich RPG that tells the tale of students from varying backgrounds finding themselves in a full-scale war later on. Three Houses adds in a mechanic where you can explore around the monastery and interact with other characters and NPCs, while nurturing skills through numerous activities such as cooking, singing, and fishing. This is the best game for players who would love to be immersed in political storytelling, as well those who often invest themselves emotionally in the characters of a game.

This is everything I wanted Fire Emblem Fates to be: branching storylines that aren't trying to sell you a third "true" path, characters who are actually committed to their ideals, and consequences. Three Houses' narrative spun an entire discourse that, unfortunately, I don't think the community will ever recover from. It's a bittersweet game and the only thing I never liked about it is how we have to restart the campus section of the game for all 3 "main" routes.

Ronald / 20s / Male

I was really addicted to this game. I enjoyed the combat and the BGM that comes with it. It really hypes me up whenever a mission starts. Experimenting with the different classes after a study session really makes it fun to try in a mission. The story of each route was really good, and you can see the goals that the captains want to achieve.

Pokémon Ruby / Sapphire introduced the beloved Gen III, hailing from the tropical Hoenn region. This was my very first Pokemon game ever. That's what makes it so special to me. Also my favorite town music is Verdanturf Town. When I was a kid, there were times where I just plug the GBA to a charger, go to Verdanturf, and just sleep with its music.

Pokemon SV features an open world where players can tackle gyms in any order, explore every area as they please, and catch any accessible Pokemon regardless of restrictions. It also features the flashy Terastalization mechanic; a generational gimmick that appeals greatly to competitive players due to its flexibility in manipulating their Pokemon's typing.

There were a lot of things riding on this game following Legends Arceus, and in a way it didn't really match that game but Scarlet and Violet did deliver in introducing some really cool concepts and lots of fun new Pokemon additions. In an unexpected twist, it handled its story and characters better than most of the games that came out after Black and White, and I will always commend it for daring to tell a story I don't think was ever done to this level in the series.

Because it's open world, at first I explored without advancing the story at all, and before I knew it I was on a snowy mountain. When I figured it was about time to beat a Gym Leader and went to a nearby Gym, I got wrecked, and my whole party ended up strung out on healing items.

Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen is a faithful remake of the original Red/Green games, with additional content that expands upon its predecessor. Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen expands on the Kanto region experience by giving players the quality of life features introduced in Generations 2 and 3, without changing what made the original games iconic. Pokemon FR/LG also expands well into the Post-Game, giving players access to the Sevii Islands, allowing them to catch new Pokemon, new Legendaries, as well as provide more Lore for the late-game characters such as the Elite Four.

Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum is the mainline games for the series' Fourth Generation, and features one of the most overarching plotlines that can take up to 50 hours to complete the main story and post-game. Pokemon D/P/PT's main appeal is that it breathed new life into Pokemon from previous generations by giving them new evolutions, on top of its iconic new Pokemon like Garchomp and Lucario. Pokemon Platinum also has one of the longest Post-Game content, giving players a whopping total of 15 Post-Game Legendaries to catch, along with trainer rematches which features one of, if not the hardest Trainer Battle against Champion Cynthia.

A Pokémon title for the DS, where the DS's signature touch pen was used for gimmicks like underground exploration and systems like the Pokétch, nostalgic. It's a work where many Pokémon that are still popular today appeared, like "Garchomp," "Lucario," "Leafeon," and "Glaceon," and the designs were good overall. Many of the Legendary Pokémon are based on mythology with grand backgrounds, and including urban legends, it remains a highly popular work even now.

Ozzy / 20s / Male

My top Pokemon mainline game. The lore feels rich and something you can sink into. The Pokemon designs during this generation are so inspired and the post game content they added make it feel more expansive. Also best Champion ever Cynthia. Music is also really immersive.

Honkai: Star Rail takes you on a journey across galaxies as HoYoverse's take on the outer space sci-fi RPG genre. This gacha game will have you in awe with its colorful characters, expansive worldbuilding, intergalactic conflicts, and intuitive turn-based combat. This game is for those who love strategic team-building, exploring a futuristic universe, engaging in fun side stories, and obliterating their enemies with orbital beams.

I played the game for a while after its release and really enjoyed it. One feature I liked was the auto-battle option, which made grinding for materials much easier, provided my characters were properly optimized. I also appreciated the humorous conversation and reply options in the game. The characters are visually appealing, especially when they unleash their ultimate abilities. One of the most memorable Trailblaze Missions for me was when Dan Heng accepted and awakened his power as Imbibitor Lunae. The song "Samudrartha," combined with that scene, made it a truly epic experience. I haven’t deleted the game from my phone because I want to catch up with the story soon.

Monster Hunter World is the fifth mainline installment in the monster hunter series. It remains true to its franchise appeal of actively hunting and fighting monsters through various weapon types with their own levels of complexity. The world built for Monster Hunter World allows its players to use the environment to their advantage, whether to trap monsters through vines, or drop a boulder to deal massive amounts of damage is a welcome strategy. With its gameplay elements, it shows its unique playstyle of hunting with a healthy mix of action, making it perfect for solo or cooperative play.

A work that became my gateway to getting hooked on online games. I'd always liked the Monster Hunter series and had played since "Monster Hunter Portable 2nd," but in this game I interacted with other players, joined a circle, and started playing with friends almost every day. It's a deeply memorable work that gave me a new gaming experience not just of playing a game, but through connections with people. In particular, "Extreme Behemoth" remains strongly impressed on me as one of the toughest, hardest monsters in Monster Hunter history. Of course there was challenging it in coordination with friends, but the once-in-a-lifetime experience of hunting together with players I met in random multiplayer was also a big appeal. Also, I took on solo hunts, which were extremely difficult at the time, and I still can't forget the sense of accomplishment when I finally defeated it after trial and error. It's a special work to me that taught me not just the fun of hunting, but the joy of community and cooperative play unique to online games.

Kingdom Hearts 2 has to be iconic for its introduction of flashy, fast, smooth, and stylish gameplay to the KH franchise. The added "context-specific" triangle button to do insane things, the introduction of different forms, and an overall edgier and over the top anime vibe is where Square Enix sort of mastered the identity of "Kingdom Hearts". The standardized camera and the removal of platforming stages was also for the best in this game.

Bloodborne is an action RPG by the beloved developers of Dark Souls, FromSoftware. In this long-hyped new IP, shields were ditched for an even faster, riskier and more feral combat where parrying was almost required and aggression was key. The dark fantasy theme takes a Victorian aesthetic with a heaping serving of eldritch horror.

Survey voice

Aiko / 20s / Female

I remember seeing this game for the first time and not liking it but I decided to give it a shot because I love the gothic aesthetic. I ended up liking it so much that it became my go-to game for blowing off steam. As corny as it sounds, Bloodborne was there for me when I was frustrated and depressed in university. Game is starting to show its age, hence the 4/5 graphics rating, but I still love it to bits.

Piolo / 30s / Male

This is precisely why I bought a PS4! I was really into the Souls genre at the time, and Bloodborne is my personal favourite. The shift in playstyle from block-focused turtling' to aggression, coupled with the faster-paced combat and rally mechanic, sets the game apart from the rest of the series — not to mention the matching soundtrack.

Persona 3 Portable brings the pioneer of the "Neo Persona" series to smaller screens, allowing players to experience its turn-based social adventure on the go. ’m very much a diehard Persona fan, and while I wouldn’t say Persona 3 Portable is the best entry in the series due to some of the compromises made to fit the PSP hardware, I still think it’s a phenomenal game. Despite the downgraded presentation in certain areas, it retains the compelling story, characters, and themes that made Persona 3 so memorable. What truly sets Persona 3 Portable apart is the introduction of the female protagonist.

Jonat / 20s / Male

Before I knew about the PS2 version, Portable was my first Persona 3 experience. It featured a hopeful story about death and a well-rounded cast of broken people who eventually found themselves through each other. Sure, young me was drawn in by the edgy exterior, but looking back as an adult, this is one of the most excellent and mature narrative experiences the PSP had to offer with an addictive JRPG and dungeon-crawling loop.

There are mainly three reasons I recommend it. The first is that a CRPG with this scale of production is almost nowhere to be found in today's market. The second is the overwhelming amount of content. Combining the main story and side quests, there's enough volume to play at least 100-150 hours. The text volume rivals an ultra-long novel too, and beyond repeat playthroughs, you can have a very dense experience in multiplayer with friends. The third is the high degree of freedom. Many of the choices the player thinks up as "I want to do this" are actually possible, giving you the sense of creating your very own story.

Diana / 20s / Female

In my opinion, one of the best PC games of all time. I never knew that Dungeons and Dragons could be so well implemented into a video game. Every story arc, every boss fight, every detail was so well thought out. This game has no bad reviews from me at all. This is the first game where I really felt like "Wow, I can actually do anything I want, and the game will deliver the consequences without missing a beat". Fire Emblem: Awakening was supposed to the franchise's last hurrah but it became the entry that saved it. Fire Emblem: Awakening is a tactical RPG where you have to fight against the evil of another time, trying to save a future that was once doomed. It defined the modern Fire Emblem formula with a playable avatar making you more connected to the story and its characters. There was endless possibilities with unit-building as when you paired units together romantically, their children will show up later to be recruitable with their parent's traits. It was also accommodating to new players with a casual gamemode.

This game was so exploitable with the learnable skills and job change. I was able to put just 4 characters in the map and block all incoming enemies with them. But what I loved about this the most is the story, at least in this game the children makes sense (unlike fe fates). It still has that old Fire Emblem games feel, unlike the new ones now.

Pokemon Sapphire was my first Pokemon game, so this remake was highly anticipated. I can remember being excited to go through the world again and trying to predict and anticipate which Pokemon were getting Mega Evolutions this time. I'm skeptical of remakes in general, but I could confidently say Omega Ruby was a good one.

I had to have a Pokemon Title on here. Going with ORAS because of how well it remade RSE. Welcome inclusions such as the PokeNav Plus, the Soar Mechanic, and then mechanics that have been series staples already such as EXP Share, Fairy Type, reusable TMs, Phys/Special Split and of course Mega Evolution.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is an RPG game that blends turn-based combat with action RPG elements, providing a fresh take on the genre. The game is set in a world with the Paintress looming over it. Every year, the Paintress paints a number, after which everyone whose age is above that number disappears. Players follow Expedition 33, the latest group of people who set out to fight the Paintress, and stop her from painting once and for all.

A perfect marriage of nearly every creative field you can think of. The music? moving and grandiose. The art direction? Like concept art came to life straight from the page. The acting and voices laced to the brim with nuance and emotion. The gameplay an evolution of turn based and action, the Pictos and Lumina system a sandbox for experimentation, the characters all harboring a depth I've never seen before in a video game. Expedition 33 is a monolithic achievement in terms of interactive media. It is a moving painting crafted with a philosopher's insight and an artisan's masterful hand. It is a story that forces you to think about your own mortality, and those of your loved ones, it shows how differently people grieve, and how none are wrong but also none are right, and if you attempt to come to your own conclusion, even your very own family might suffer for it. Death comes for us all, but what can we do but cope? All the elements are there and they work together to create one of the finest works of art that I've had to use a controller to interact with.

Ronald / 20s / Male

One of my best games of all time. The game is really addictive and it was able to seemingly combine turn-based and action into one challenging but fun experience. Everything is top-notch from top to bottom. The story really hooked me until the end. It was confusing at first but really good when everything was put into place. The music really sets the mood of the battle or moment, and you are drawn into it.

Pokémon Black and White, the mainline entries of the franchise's Generation 5, surprised fans by featuring a regional dex filled exclusively with new Pokémon. Alongside setting the events in the Unova region, inspired by New York City rather than Japan as in previous games, the storyline, complementing the games’ unprecedented nature, is a fan favorite that questions the morality of Pokémon: the servitude of Pokémon and the stripping of their agency. Regarded by many as the height of Pokémon's 2D pixel charm, Black and White chart Hilda/Hilbert's journey through Unova, where they collect gym badges and challenge the Pokémon League while confronting Team Plasma's radical crusade against the exploitative bond between humans and Pokémon. Legendary Pokémon Reshiram (White) and Zekrom (Black) serve as the games’ central figures, embodying the contrasting concepts of truth and ideals, respectively.

The first Pokémon I played on release day. Made under the theme "giving Red/Green players who've become adults a fresh experience like Red/Green all over again," almost all information was cut off until the game's release. The Pokémon that appear were completely renewed, and until you reach the ending, there wasn't a single returning Pokémon from past titles. That excitement of not knowing what would jump out of the grass was, I think, an experience only those who played it in real time could get.

Show original (日本語)

For me, rather than Diamond/Pearl, this is the DS-era Pokémon masterpiece. The story is subtly dark, and N's words, hero or villain, ambiguous, make you wonder, "Is training Pokémon really a good thing?" With the bold premise that every Pokémon is new, many people dislike the new designs, but I think the ice-cream Pokémon and the garbage Pokémon are more Pokémon-like than the Digimon-ish Lucario. It's plenty fun as is, so a remake is OK not to make.

Show original (日本語)

The Pokemon game that started it all. The Generation I titles, namely Pokemon Red, Green, and Blue, kicked off the global phenomenon with their turn-based combat and monster-catching mechanics on the Game Boy. Play as the series' original protagonist, now widely known as Red, as you collect all eight Gym Badges, challenge the Pokemon League, and complete the original Pokedex.

- The text is extremely well done. The pacing is good too - Resolving the impassable obstacles like the Saffron City gates and Snorlax is a big point of this game. Ultimately you need to collect all the Gym Badges, but the process stops being an easy-to-follow straight line from the midgame, which personally I rate highly - There are few detours and it's almost all battles, so it gets boring easily. Without nostalgia bias, playing it now might be rough

Show original (日本語)

The PS1 classic that redefined the RPG genre, one polygon at a time. Despite its dated look, Final Fantasy VII's story and gameplay still holds up and captivates gamers to this day. It goes beyond the limits of its hardware to tell a story that is still iconic up to this day, and its influence continues to shine through the games that it has inspired with its innovation and aesthetic.

Final Fantasy VII on the PS1 is special for me because it feels like more than just a game I played, It feels like an experience that slowly builds up until it becomes something emotionally heavy and unforgettable. At first, I am just a mercenary in a group called Avalanche, fighting against a corporation that seems too big to take down. But as the story unfolds, it becomes much bigger than that. It turns into something personal, something about identity, memory, loss, and the fear of becoming something I do not understand. What really stays with me is how the characters feel real even with the simple graphics. Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, and Barret are not just party members, they feel like people with history and emotional weight behind everything they do. Their moments together carry more meaning the longer I stay with them. I also love how the game keeps shifting in tone. One moment it is serious and dramatic, and the next it lets me breathe with quiet, human moments. It makes the world feel alive instead of constantly intense.

- The legend that created super-popular characters like Cloud and Sephiroth - Since it was when the PS came out, the graphics are full-on polygons and a bit rough, but at the time they were amazing - A very fun customization system where anyone can use magic, summons, and special commands by attaching Materia - With Materia combinations, you get surprising effects and cheat-like methods are born, lots to grind - There are plenty of minigames, and you could kill time on those alone - Every character is appealing - Each character's unique Limit Breaks are powerful and flashy in presentation - There's almost nothing to do after clearing, but even so, covering everything makes time melt away - It's no exaggeration to call it the greatest god-tier work of FF

It's a landmark title being Dragon Quests step into 3D graphics, while still retaining that Akira Toriyama vibe with its cel-shaded style. It has a lot of good mechanics going for it like the addictive alchemy system and the Dragonball-inspired tension gauge that allows your party members to go "super saiyan" in battle. A lot of players back then weren't able to play Monster Hunter Tri, as it was the first time the series was placed on a Nintendo console: the Wii. Strangely enough, it was a bit barebones compared to the games that came before and after it. Since Capcom rebuilt the engine from scratch, they had to slash the monster roster and cut four entire weapon classes just to get the game to run on Nintendo's white box. What we got in return was the birth of Moga Village, the debut of the Switch Axe, and the introduction of the infamous underwater swimming mechanics. It was also the only Monster Hunter game to have splitscreen co-op, albeit limited to the arena.

I know Cyberpunk 2077 had a really rocky launch, and it actually took me three years to finally play it after the Phantom Liberty DLC came out. And honestly, Phantom Liberty really made V feel like he was in an actual spy movie. But underneath all the bugs and crashes, there was a genuinely good game. The characters felt alive, and romances like Panam’s really made it feel like I was connecting with someone. I’ve always been a fan of the cyberpunk genre, from Blade Runner to Ghost in the Shell and Altered Carbon. This game really made me feel like I was a merc trying to survive in an unforgiving city of sin, chrome, and bullets.

I really enjoyed the story of this game, it really hooked me with the struggles of V and how he/she will do anything to survive. At first glance it's a very simple, quite plain pixel game. The battle system is surprisingly easy too, and the playtime is by no means long. But when you encounter an enemy in the game, this work asks the player: "You, why do you kill monsters?" In many RPGs, an enemy that appears before you is treated as something to be defeated. But "UNDERTALE" prepares a completely different path there. You can progress without killing a single one. By talking, encouraging, dancing, and so on, you can end every battle in another form. And the so-called "enemies" that appear in this game aren't mere obstacles. Each one has a name, a personality, and a story. If you kill them, the game remembers it. If you spare them, it remembers that too. Every choice the player makes influences the story's final destination. But what shocked me most was that this game behaves as if it understands "I am being played by the player right now." At a certain moment, the game calls your name, touches on actions you took before, and makes you realize. That the things you thought you had "redone," this game had never once forgotten.

Show original (日本語)

Sword and Shield was Game Freak's commitment to make the transition from handheld into console games, but it still followed the same formula of the gym journey that was arguably getting stale at that point. The release of the Legends games represented Game Freak trying something truly new and it reassured long-time fans like myself that this franchise is just starting to explore what it can do with the newfound power of home consoles. The satisfaction of surveying Pokemon and completing research tasks was unexpectedly fun and refreshing. While there has been a second Legends game since with Z-A, Arceus still wins for me as someone who was never really big into the battles of Pokemon and much prefers catching them all.

Lucas / 20s / Male

I could remember when this game was announced and thinking it was nothing like any previous Pokemon game. It was mysterious and full of wonder, and that made it my most enjoyable Pokemon experience since maybe Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. It took bold new moves with its storytelling and world, and even altering the core Pokemon gameplay to keep it fresh. It encouraged exploration, I'll never forget taking turns with my brother to play it then comparing notes about which Pokemon we found in what area over pizza dinner. This game was about its finer details and became a foundation for what Pokemon could be moving forward, despite being set in its past.

Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep is a prequel that features a story split across three routes, with each character's perspective filling in the gaps left by the others to weave a larger narrative. Play as Terra, Aqua, and Ventus, each boasting a distinct combat style and set of abilities that offer a fresh gameplay experience with every route.

A great (and important) addition to the overarching plot of Kingdom Hearts, and a good translation of and update to the combat system from the PS2 to the PSP. You have to play all three characters to fully understand what makes this game good. Aside from their intersecting stories, you also get to see the game through different lenses due to the differences in the characters' playstyles.

Sicat / 20s / Male

While I am more critical of this game nowadays, this game is just accompanied with many memories that it has a special place in my heart. A really good prequel that has some problems, especially boss design but still fun if you play casually. Story is also interesting and has some of the best cutscenes (Blank Points)

Crisis Core lets you take control of Zack Fair, a monumental figure in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII's story. This prequel shows Zack, as well as familiar characters from the PS1 classic, go through trials and tribulations to unwrap the conspiracy that lies beneath the shiny floors of the Shinra Electric Power Company. As the truth further unravels, so too does Zack's resolve to uphold his honor as SOLDIER.

God Eater helped prove that you can in fact lay a proper challenge to the dominant species, in this case, Monster Hunter. By adopting a slick, speedy anime-inspired style, God Eater and its expanded edition God Eater Burst catered to players looking for an alternative option to the king of PSP hunting games. Players could switch between weapon modes rapidly when using their God Arcs, swapping instantly between melee, gun, and eater forms to tackle the fast-based battles and fearsome Aragami foes. They could also express themselves and min-max their power by creating customized projectiles and gimmicks in the bullet editor, able to break the game with the right combination of bullet patterns. God Eater also distinguished itself by focusing on companionship and allowing even solo players to hunt alongside NPC partners, relieving some of the lonelieness on a platform with limited online functionality like the PSP.

This game felt like a cooler Monster Hunter that was also easier to get into. Having allies by your side even in single-player made it much more comfortable to play, and I really got into the character, monster, and equipment designs in this game.

Piolo / 30s / Male

A game that I vastly prefer over monster-hunter due to it's fast pace. I can never forget this game's bullet system and how fun it is to get bullet recipes from the net and find out how hilariously broken they are.

Persona 5 is my favorite game of all time on the PS4. It's a stunning game that perfectly showcases Atlus' strengths in storytelling, art direction, gameplay, and music. In many ways, it's the title that helped Atlus reach a much wider audience and grow into the globally recognized company it is today, and for good reason. From its stylish presentation to its unforgettable cast and compelling themes, Persona 5 delivers an experience that stands out as one of the best RPGs of its generation.

Ronald / 20s / Male

I am a HUGE Persona fan, and this game was really good. The HUD and animations set the bar for turn-based games incredibly high. You can really feel the amount of effort put into the combat and new mechanics like the “Showtime”. The story was interesting and dark, although the twist of Akechi being the traitor was pretty easy to figure out. Unlike Adachi in Persona 4, I never figured that one out until I actually took the time to analyze everything.

It fully utilizes the school year, giving you more time to explore its new features, such as the additional storyline that takes place after the main story and the new Confidants introduced in this version. The Palaces have also been expanded. While they still retain most of their original layouts, the addition of Will Seeds not only makes dungeon exploration more fulfilling but also gives you a greater sense of completion as you collect them.

A supreme work as an action RPG. The boss fights in particular are extremely well crafted, with an appeal that makes you want to challenge fierce enemies over and over. On the other hand, its difficulty is very high, and the main game's final boss, the "Soul of Cinder," made me struggle for about three hours. After racking up defeat after defeat while searching for a strategy, the sense of accomplishment when I finally won was exceptional. It's a work that gave me the best boss-fight experience, but I won't forget the grudge of being held up for three hours. Unforgivable.

Monster Hunter Rise is the 6th mainline game of the Monster Hunter series, released on the Nintendo Switch. In previous Monster Hunter games, battles are slower and the only weapon that you can jump in is the Insect Blade. In Rise, the introduction of the Wirebug mechanic turned it into fast-paced combat with verticality, aerial attacks, and quick dodge for any weapon you choose. General movement around the map is now quicker with the addition of Palamutes, your trusty canine companion. Monster Hunter Rise strikes the perfect balance between old-school and modern, even with how the new armor sets look and the new monster designs. It's a good entry point for newcomers into the world of Monster Hunter.

The story and music are both the best. Despite being a heavy story, it's not designed to just make you read endless text; it's designed to draw you in with the world, dialogue, and music. It's enjoyable on its own, but since it's part of a series, I'd recommend the past works too, a masterpiece. However, since it also has what's commonly called "Yoko Taro style" salvation-less storytelling, people who are mentally fragile might not be able to handle it. Also, since it's more action-heavy than the previous works, it's hard to recommend to people who aren't used to games...

The very first Persona game that I played and my entry into the series. This was the game that I played a LOT during my high school years. I was really engrossed in the story and its mysteries surrounding the deaths of the people in Inaba. I really enjoyed the funny moments between the characters whenever they hung out, and it really made you feel like you were part of their group. The combat was really addictive and I was always curious with what Personas I could get after mixing two or more other persona. I also enjoyed the game’s BGM and there were times when I would just stand around and listen to it.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice in FromSoftware's twist to the Dark Souls Formula they popularized. Unlike its older games, Sekiro emphasizes split-second swordsmaship through timed deflects. Momentum is also key as the game's posture system encourages players to keep the pressure on enemies in ways Dark Souls and Bloodborne have never done before. Despite the innovative mechanics, Sekiro still retains the atmosphere and rewarding difficulty the were renown for. The game also has a setting unique to FromSoftware titles. The gameplay was consistently enjoyable overall, but I'd dock points because trying to 100% it takes an absurd amount of time. The graphics were beautiful, at least by the standards of the time. The battle themes are of course always cool, and the insert song "Counter Attack" that plays at various points in the story comes at the perfect moment, playing right when you want it and sticking in your ears. Final Fantasy VIII definitely has some mixed reviews due to the unconventional Junction system which was hard to understand at first, but later turned out to break the game wide open if used correctly. It also differed from previous Final Fantasy games due to the enemies being at the same average level as the party, which led to battles becoming easier at low levels. Despite these, it had a fresh story based on romance, a very memorable soundtrack, and one of the best minigames in Final Fantasy in Triple Triad. Final Fantasy VIII is definitely a nostalgic turn-based JRPG worth playing, even if it takes some time to get used to its unique mechanics.

Each run you go on is different with how the map changes and you face new and returning bosses that you might be familiar with from the entire franchise including Dark Souls. It's the perfect experience for friends who crave the challenge of FromSoftware combat in bite-sized co-op sessions.

Take on a journey alone or with your friends to reclaim your role as a guardian of the mortal realm and save the world.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, the fourth generation in the series, takes the hunter on a journey with a travelling caravan to explore new lands and towns. Adding new verticality to the hunt, the game adds the ability to jump off of ledges and walls to execute the new mounting action, allowing the hunter to deliver attacks while holding on to the monster. With the addition of two new weapons, the Insect Glaive and Charge Blade, the hunter will take on new monsters like Gore Magala as they journey with the Caravan to help towns and grow as a new and upcoming hunter!

- An excellent Monster Hunter playable on the 3DS - The Insect Glaive and Charge Blade were featured for the first time - As grind elements there's careful selection of excavated gear and charm selection, but if you start selecting even the weapon's appearance, you'll never have enough time - Monsters' Apex state basically deflects your attacks unless you carry a dedicated item, so that one point is hard to praise - Among the Monster Hunters you can play on a handheld, it has very large grind elements and is enjoyable

The critically-acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV is Square Enix's second attempt at an MMORPG after the success of Final Fantasy XI. Following its disastrous 2010 release, the game was brought offline after a world-ending in-game event before being released again as A Realm Reborn in 2013. Now, Final Fantasy XIV is considered one of the best MMORPGs of all time, with its second major story arc currently underway. The game is also well known for its generous free trial, which currently includes A Realm Reborn, the award-winning Heavensward expansion, Stormblood, and the critically-acclaimed Shadowbringers expansion. This trial lets players play the game for free with no restrictions on playtime up to Level 80, allowing them meet new people, as well as experience amazing writing, fantastic music, and a lovable cast of characters.

- First off, the story that's synonymous with FF14 is very interesting, moving me enough to think "please make it a movie," it was really great. While MMOs commonly have a custom of basically skipping the story and immediately grinding levels, I think putting effort into a story you can enjoy even solo is a wonderful idea, and precisely because of that the world is established, and the game atmosphere born from players enjoying it while understanding that world is very nice. - The battles are fun. Later MMOs have copied its battle gimmicks and systems many times, but the reason I still feel FF14 is good is that "because the gimmicks and enemy attacks are firmly linked to the story background, the immersion into combat is different." Rather than an impressive-graphics follow-up game that merely inherits FF14's gimmick ideas, the reason I feel FF14 is good is precisely that it sublimates them into gimmicks you can solve only because all players understand the enemy's background and world through a highly satisfying story, things like "this boss is a fire god, so wouldn't getting in the water be good?" or "this boss battle's field is set up as a special ship built specifically to defeat the boss lurking in this sea, so wouldn't activating the ship's device in time with the boss's attack timing be good?" - The BGM is good. I'd never been that interested in BGM, but around the time I entered the Stormblood arc in FF14's story, I was suddenly struck, the BGM is just plain good. Not only the tracks for each area but also those for dungeons and boss fights are all highly polished, and I experienced the amazingness of BGM for the first time. Not just BGM, but the attention to all the sound is tremendous; for example, walking sounds change depending on the floor material and shoe material, and you can even choose whether sound is picked up from the camera position or the character position. These many fine details connect to the feeling of not merely playing a game, but living in FF14's world as a character. - The amount of content. This may partly be content volume that comes precisely from a long-running game, but the breadth and variety of content is enormous, and every player is made to have an aptitude for some kind of content. That's why I think the player population keeps growing even after running this long. - Character design. Later games may have higher freedom or be prettier, but despite having so many people on a server, it delivers seamlessness with no lag while producing maximum-level graphics, I think. Also, the freedom of character creation is on the narrow side, but fine attention to detail can be firmly reflected as individuality. At a glance, people tend to think character creation is better the more freedom it has, but in FF14 that isn't necessarily so. That's because the current freedom is designed not to break FF14's world. Keeping a fantasy world while allowing character creation with various individual races (burly races, simple humans, cat people, rabbit people, tiny people, beast-folk), the current state is just right.

Show original (日本語)

- The MMORPG successor to FF11 - A super-popular work with hundreds of thousands of players even now - It's an MMORPG, but it also has a story-game side where the main story boasts console-level quality or higher - The battle content is nicely divided by difficulty so that everyone from beginners to advanced players can enjoy it - Since it's a game that's continued for over 10 years, the content is enormous, and trying to do it all would turn you into an old man - For better or worse, all kinds of people are around, so experiencing a bit of a village society, whether that's good or bad, I don't know - There's a lot of trouble in interpersonal relationships, so be careful when you play - The game itself is very fun, but you feel a rut if you keep at it long; since the battle system is being overhauled from patch 8.0, veteran players coming back might find it fun

Show original (日本語)

Final Fantasy IX is a triumphant return to the series' roots, with a joyful, cartoonish fantasy style that recalls classic JRPGs the likes of Dragon Quest. The soundtrack a sweeping, melodic epic by the legendary Nobuo Uematsu, the story a wistful tale of identity and purpose, the characters all lovable and memorable, with very distinct personalities and great banter. FFIX is a breath of fresh air and a nostalgic JRPG, and the mainline FF series would certainly be less colorful without it.

This game is the last numbered Final Fantasy title on the PlayStation, and it's unforgettable due to its excellent story. The most memorable moment for me is Steiner's date scene with Beatrix and his recognition of Zidane as an ally despite his initial impression of him when they first met. Steiner is a really memorable character, and the way his arc ends is satisfying. The praise he receives is well-deserved.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an open-world RPG where you play as the Dragonborn, a mortal born with the soul of a dragon, on your quest to defeat the World-Eater, Alduin. Players don't need to rush through the story because there are a lot of sidequests each with their own plotlines that add to the lore of the world you're in. Plus you can get useful weapons, items, or powers. It's fun to choose which race you are playing as because NPCs have different reactions for each. TESV:Skyrim is well-known in the community for the number of mods available that range from cosmetics, UI changes, or just hilarious additions to the game. Demon's Souls was where the Souls genre was born. The game's controls haven't changed at all from the old "Demon's Souls." Melee combat is quite disadvantageous, and if you play centered on ranged attacks, you can basically get through to the end. This point is also greatly different from the later "DARK SOULS" series, which is very interesting. The reason I want to recommend this game is that I felt it's one of the works that lets you experience the PS5's performance most clearly. Above all, the visual expression is completely next-gen quality, and the delicate lighting and the meticulous craftsmanship of the backgrounds and stages are overwhelming. It's a work I'd want everyone to experience at least once.

Where the Souls series began, your first Souls game will always be the hardest since it's the one that teaches you how to get good and how to have the right mindset, how to be patient, how not to spam, how to play with intention and discipline. The gameplay is tight and a cornerstone of action RPG combat, and the lore is deep and very dark. Brought punishing dark fantasy to the forefront and created its own subgenre.

I really loved that the signs and the oil weaknesses were brought over as a battle mechanic in the game. I like the fact that as a player I need to be mindful of which signs and oils to use for exploiting weaknesses, I really felt like a Witcher. I love how there's no good or bad endings with the quests, having to choose which is the lesser evil made me ponder on the choices of this game a lot. 4/5 only on gameplay because of the side quests that breaks the meta, like Geralt is in a hurry to find Ciri but instead he spends time going around doing weird menial tasks. If the side quests were more pressing and felt like Geralt really has to be bothered to do them and because it's on his way, I'd probably rate gameplay a 100%. There are some side quests that can be done after completing the story, but the rewards aren't that valuable at that point.

Thranidr / 55+ / Male

By far the best action RPG made to date. Follows the books relatively closely with the main characters. The quests are far from simple fetch and carry, they add to the story and immersion in the game.

Set in modern-day Shibuya, The World Ends With You is an action RPG that immerses you in its setting through the stylish visuals and music. Its unique battle system perfectly makes use of the Nintendo DS's two screens, allowing you to control two characters at once in combat. One the bottom screen, you can use the pins that you obtain throughout the game to attack. To use these pins and eliminate your enemies, swipe, tap, and press with your stylus. On the top screen, you will be able to play as another character by pressing inputs on the D-Pad in a certain order. While you can let the game auto-play the top screen for you, it is also satisfying to get into the rhythm of getting both characters in sync. The story also tells a heartfelt story about human connection. You play as Neku, who lost his memories and refuses the company of others. As he is dropped into the life-or-death Reaper's Game, he is forced to cooperate with others to survive. Follow his quest to regain his memories, as well as to discover what Shibuya and its people mean to him.

Fire Emblem Fates splits into three paths, with each path choosing a family to side with in a war that tears the region apart. Each path leads to a different story that also indirectly determines the difficulty of the game, with the third path combining the units of both families. With Fire Emblem's traditional grid-based strategy mechanics, Fates is great for fans of the franchise and also for newcomers that want a strategy game that incorporates moral choices with varying degrees of difficulty.

Despite how badly they handled the multiple routes (just sell all 3 routes in one package on standard edition tbh and not some scam special edition where everything is on one cartridge) and how bad the localization is, I still had fun with this game and probably my fave FE gameplay. My Castle is fun and the character designs are some of my fave

As a remake of the original Final Fantasy Tactics, it adds an improved translation, voiced cutscenes, and a small amount of extra content, including a multiplayer mode. Goddess of Victory: NIKKE is a rail shooter gacha game which uses a cover-and-fire battle system, available for both PC and mobile. On release, its designs had warranted mixed reception for its leaning on suggestive designs on a majority of its playable characters, but players were quickly absorbed by the game's surprisingly dark story and the worldbuilding around the concept of humanity retreating underground. The gameplay has a low skill entry, but combined with teambuilding has a high skill cap, especially when it comes to dealing with either boss fight raids, or PvP. Compared to other gacha games in this generation, the developers are suprisingly communicative and generous with their compensations, and have not hesitated to give updates to characters that are in need of updates like buffs and adjustments.

Chrono Trigger is a legend in the JRPG space. It's a project that was headed by Square's so-called "Dream Team" consisting of Final Fantasy Creator, Hironobu Sakaguchi, Dragon Quest Creator, Yuji Horii, and Dragon Quest designer and Dragonball author, Akira Toriyama. Chrono Trigger is a must-play classic that any JRPG fan needs to experience at least once.

I love how it immediately pulls me into this adventurous, almost magical feeling world, then quickly expands into time travel, which completely changes how I think about the story. I am not just moving forward through a linear journey, I am jumping across eras, seeing how my actions in one time period affect another. That idea alone already makes it exciting, but the game goes way beyond that. What really gets me is the pacing. It never feels slow or wasted. Every moment feels like it matters, whether I am meeting a new character, discovering a new era, or uncovering something about the world’s history. It keeps building momentum in a way that makes me want to keep going just to see what happens next. And the characters, they are unforgettable. Crono, Marle, Lucca, Frog, Robo, Ayla, and Magus all feel distinct, not just in gameplay but in personality and story importance. I genuinely care about them, and the game keeps giving me moments that make them feel more real and meaningful.

Back then I only got as far as reaching the ending without even a strategy guide, but years later I learned about FF12's reputation at the time and its grind elements, and played it again in college. After that, once I became a working adult, I bought and played the TZA version too. It's a game that takes dozens of hours to clear, but it's fun no matter how many times you play, and a highlight is how the way you feel the story changes greatly with age. If there's anyone who played it long ago and left it at that, it's an immortal masterpiece I'd want you to pick up again now that you're an adult.

A more story-focused game, Pokemon Colloseum is also Generation 3's equivalent to a battle simulator, but only limited to local battles.

A crazy work (as a compliment) where the protagonist has quite a rugged look & the story starts with the protagonist's theft. At the time I remember mistaking the motorcycle the protagonist rides for the Heavy Star from Kirby Air Ride.

It took a few games, but it wasn't until Mega Man Battle Network 4 when this game felt like it found its stride. The real-time grid combat and the Battle Chips mechanic plays out as a deck-building game with an action/reflex component. It is also amusing to reflect on how it had a dual-release approach with Red Sun and Blue Moon following the trend of other popular GBA titles at the time which encouraged trading and comparison of chip collections.

Despite the challenge of compressing the Monster Hunter formula into the Nintendo 3DS, Monster Hunter 4 managed to defy all odds and came out as a complete package, with fans even calling it and its successor, MH4U, the pinnacle of the series. It set the standard for the franchise’s storytelling, letting each monster you fight advance the narrative and the mystery of the Gore Magala. While it retains the interconnected, closed-off area sections of the classic entries, the environments feel more dynamic, with more sections you can climb and jump on. This adds a layer of strategy to the gameplay loop when you pair it with the new mechanic–mounting and attacking monsters–granting you a huge advantage when you successfully execute it. This interaction between the mechanics and environment would even continue to be iterated upon well into the future entries of the franchise, like World and Rise.

Pokemon Stadium 2 is the sequel of the original Pokemon Stadium on the Nintendo 64, being the Generation 2 counterpart and upgrade from the first game. Like the original, it is also a battle-oriented Pokemon game, catering towards the tournament-oriented crowd of the series. This makes it one of the main games used for official old-generation formats from way back in the 2000s, due to its more stringent, combat-focused gameplay. Being one of the first 3D Pokemon games that came out around this time, it has a very crafty aesthetic with its Pokemon designs, garnering praise with how well-made the new dimension feels of the Pokemon are and how soulful they look. All of these qualities would catapult Stadium 2 into one of the niche, but also well-known classics for its console, eventually allowing it to be re-released for the Nintendo Switch platform.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland is a monster-collecting RPG spin-off from Dragon Quest, first released in 1998 for Game Boy Color and later remade for 3DS in 2012. It follows Terry, pulled into a mysterious realm called the Great Tree, where he tames and breeds monsters to build a team, similar in spirit to Pokémon but with DQ's own humor and style. It's also the game that launched the entire Dragon Quest Monsters spin-off franchise, which continued with titles like Joker and The Dark Prince.

The game utilizes Break-and-Boost battle system in a turn-based format, creating a great opportunity for players to outsmart their opponents. - A masterpiece that reminds you all over again of the appeal of SNES-era pixel-art RPGs - It accurately recreates the style of good old SNES-era RPGs like FF4-6 - The system is a turn-based command RPG, but it's fun with its own unique Break and Boost mechanics - Several protagonists' individual stories unfold - There are elements that link behind the protagonists' stories, and that connects to hidden content - The secret boss is extremely difficult and rewarding - There are customization elements like jobs and subjobs, so you can enjoy building - You can perform special actions like stealing from or fighting townspeople, which is fun; some ordinary NPCs are absurdly strong, which is amusing - A masterpiece that people who love SNES-era Square Enix RPGs are sure to love

Beautiful visuals and depth of the environment as well. This is what kept me inspired to keep pursuing game development for my college degree.

Final Fantasy Tactics is a story of two childhood friends who are ultimately separated by class division and a looming war in Ivalice. As Ramza, you navigate complicated politics between two power-hungry nobles, a corrupt church looking to consolidate power, and your own childhood friend Delita whose ambition grows following the death of his sister. As Ramza struggles against his own noble family, he uncovers a more sinistor plot from ancient demons looking to use the bloody War of the Lions to ressurect their demonic leader, Ultima. This TRPG entry into the Final Fantasy series is well-known for its job system, which allows you to freely mix and match the abilities of different jobs, encouraging players to create 'hybrid' classes that are extremely powerful. You'll need to make your units and team powerful as the bosses in the game don't pull any punches, ensuring that you feel the same urgency Ramza feels as he struggles and fights to save Ivalice.

Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade was a lot of fan's entry point to the franchise. It is a Tactical RPG that truly displayed what the series was all about. It had the classic story of defeating an evil tucked away within the world as you recruit characters to your cause. This entry was also the host of many fan-favorite lords like Lyn, Hector, and Eliwood. The difficulty was just right with solid level design and fulfilling unit progression. The support system also gave more glimpses into every unit's character and relationship. This game was simply great and still serves a good entry point today with the Lyn's tutorial section.
