Dragon Quest V is the fifth main instalment of the Dragon Quest series, and it has players going through the three different eras of the protagonist's life. The game starts off with the Hero being a young child and eventually ends with him having his own family and children who fight alongside him. Aside from that, the game features a new monster recruitment system, which allows players to add monsters to their own party and use them in battle, as well as a new marriage candidate who wasn't included in the previous versions of the game.

Survey voice

The first time I played, that scene with Pankraz was so sad I couldn't stop crying. Within the numbered series, it's rare for the fun of recruiting monsters as allies, and the talking-point appeal where fans can get worked up over who to choose as a marriage partner, in short, it's a must-play. I'm a Bianca partisan, of course.

I played it many times with all sorts of restrictions, no casino, no Elfin Elixir, etc. During play, I accidentally touched the console itself and it froze. The despair when I saw the words "Your adventure log has been erased" along with the cursed BGM is, now, a good memory too.

Kirby Super Star is a 2D side-scrolling action platformer where you play as the titular Kirby who fights their enemies using their unique ability to copy their after swallowing them. This game is divided into multiple smaller sub-games, with each having their own stories and gameplay gimmicks from one another. Another unique feature of this game is the Helper system, where you can sacrifice your current copy ability to spawn in a Helper with that ability to join the fray. You can even play co-op with a friend, by having them control the Helper, adding more fun to the table.

Chrono Trigger is a legend in the JRPG space. It's a project that was headed by Square's so-called "Dream Team" consisting of Final Fantasy Creator, Hironobu Sakaguchi, Dragon Quest Creator, Yuji Horii, and Dragon Quest designer and Dragonball author, Akira Toriyama. It tells a time travel tale spanning eras, featuring lovable characters with their combo techs showcasing their amazing teamwork on the battlefield. Chrono Trigger is a must-play classic that any JRPG fan needs to experience at least once.

Survey voice

I love how it immediately pulls me into this adventurous, almost magical feeling world, then quickly expands into time travel, which completely changes how I think about the story. I am not just moving forward through a linear journey, I am jumping across eras, seeing how my actions in one time period affect another. That idea alone already makes it exciting, but the game goes way beyond that. What really gets me is the pacing. It never feels slow or wasted. Every moment feels like it matters, whether I am meeting a new character, discovering a new era, or uncovering something about the world’s history. It keeps building momentum in a way that makes me want to keep going just to see what happens next. And the characters, they are unforgettable. Crono, Marle, Lucca, Frog, Robo, Ayla, and Magus all feel distinct, not just in gameplay but in personality and story importance. I genuinely care about them, and the game keeps giving me moments that make them feel more real and meaningful.

- One of the SNES's god-tier works, made through the dream collaboration of Dragon Quest's Mr. Horii + Dragon Ball's Akira Toriyama + FF's Mr. Sakaguchi - A game system exactly like Dragon Quest + FF, with a grand-scale story that travels back and forth between past, present, and future - Fresh touches everywhere, like a mechanism where what you did in the past is reflected in the present and future (the black treasure chests) - Battles use FF's ATB method, but a unique "Combo tech" system is built in, making it fun and tricky to decide who to put in your party - It adopts multiple endings, rare for the era, and it's fun to experiment to see what endings you can get - One of the masterpieces from Square Enix's golden age

Super Mario RPG takes us on yet another whimsical adventure across the Mushroom Kingdom. After rescuing Princess Peach from one of Bowser's many attempts at kidnapping her, Mario finds himself going up against a sentient sword named Exor and his ruthless Smithy Gang. To stop this group from taking over the world, Mario must join forces with new friends, familiar faces, and even the unlikeliest of foes. Despite having a more complex story, what makes Super Mario RPG stand out from classic Mario titles its gameplay. It foregoes the traditional 2D platforming in favor of turn-based combat and other RPG elements.

Pulling off 100 consecutive Super Jumps is something you can be proud of - During battle, there's an element where pressing the button with good timing during the attack motion strengthens the attack, which was fresh for the era and a very fun element - Mario's jump stands out as Mario's identity even in the game, which is interesting - Incidentally, Mario doesn't talk in the game - It's sad that Luigi doesn't appear

Yoshi's Island was also labeled as Super Mario World 2 on release, and although it differs in every way from Super Mario World 1, it doesn't back down from the expectations set by the Mario series. In the first Yoshi platformer, players will play as not one Yoshi, but an entire island of Yoshis who pass Baby Mario between them each level. Baby Mario has barely evaded capture from Bowser's henchman Kamek, and the Yoshis must band together to rescue his captured brother Baby Luigi, all with Baby Mario on their backs. When Yoshi takes damage, Baby Mario will float off in a bubble, and Yoshi must chase after to rescue him; if time runs out, Kamek's flunkies will kidnap Baby Mario and you'll lose a life. Yoshi's Island set itself apart with its storybook aesthetic, a memorable soundtrack (that final boss theme), and a surprising amount of content for a SNES platformer with 54 complete levels.

Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War is the fourth entry in the long-running Fire Emblem series. It features the familiar turn-based strategy from the previous games but is more ambitious in scale, featuring very large maps that players must traverse to continue through its story. This game is also known for being the first in the series that features a second generation that depends on who you paired up in the first half of the game.

The system where you can get characters married by having them act next to each other was shocking. Depending on who you choose for the man's side, not only the performance but even the hair color changes, so back then I played while making friends with the strategy guide. There was also a sad development where, despite the name being exactly the same as a Crusader, you couldn't use that Crusader's weapon because you didn't choose the Crusader as the father, which was fun in its own way.

For elementary-school me, it was a deadly, ultra-high-difficulty game. To recruit every character, I mimicked the strategy guide's maneuvers and repeatedly spent 2-3 hours clearing a single stage until I beat the character-raising stat gacha, a hellish game. Maybe as a reaction to this work, the Fire Emblems after it gave the impression of being a bit easier as simulations, difficulty selection aside, so I sometimes get nostalgic for this work.

Donkey Kong Country 2 is often cited as the most essential entry of the original Donkey Kong Country series, which might come as a surprise considering that the lush jungle atmosphere of the original and even Donkey Kong himself are nowhere to be found. This sequel follows the original as a 3D-aesthetic sidescrolling platformer, but it sets itself apart with the introduction of Dixie Kong, a new playable character who can glide through the air with her ponytail, and its zany level design, taking players through a pirate ship, the inside of a volcano, and even a hornet-infested theme park. The soundtrack is arguably the game's most famous element, with David Wise's composition Stickerbush Symphony continuing to receive accolades and being featured in Donkey Kong Bananza and the Super Smash Bros. series. Donkey Kong Country 2 also formalized the series' famous bonus levels, as although the first game featured secret areas which often had minigames, the sequel was the first to name each bonus stage and reward players with a collectible coin for completing them, leading to further secrets that you'll have to play for yourself to discover.

Lesser-known Super Nintendo (SNES / SFC) games our players loved.

Trials of ManaHidden Gem

Trials of Mana

4.5/5

Trials of Mana is the 3rd game in the Mana series, designed by Koichii Ishii and published by then SquareSoft for the SNES. This game is an underground hit for most people due to the massive SNES line-up and the popularity of its brother series, FInal Fantasy. Yet it features tight gameplay, rich aesthetics that age very well due to its 2d top-down nature and a bold take on RPG combat at the time— freeform real-time combat, with you being able to push your characters skills the same time as the enemy is able to attack you. This fresh experience for RPGs at the time gives its unique flair aside from the usual expectations that this RPG fulfills. The game, just like its series, is considered to be one of the secret hits of the 90s, inspiring other franchises due to the great combination of RPG elements it has.

Kirby's Dream Land 3Kirby's Dream Land 3Hidden Gem

Kirby's Dream Land 3

4.2/5

Kirby's Dream Land 3, the last of 3 games to carry the name of the original Kirby game on the Game Boy, is also the first console game to hold that title. Released in November 1997, well after the release of the Nintendo 64, it's often overshadowed by Kirby Super Star on the Super NES, but has fortunately received plenty of rereleases on later platforms. A 2D platformer like most in the series, Kirby's Dream Land 3 sees Kirby travel through 5 worlds, assisted by animal friends who can transform Kirby's copy abilities. 3 of these animal friends return from Kirby's Dream Land 2, joined by 3 brand-new friends. Kirby can also summon Gooey, a helper who can either be controlled by a 2nd player or a CPU. Each of the game's 30 stages hides a Heart Star, which Kirby receives when he helps a character, such as finding a clown's missing shapes, or not squashing any of the flowers in any area. Sometimes, these will require a specific combination of copy ability and animal friend, so players will need to remember each of the abilities to solve the puzzle of what each character needs. With its soft pastel art and soothing soundtrack, a stark contrast to Kirby Super Star's punchy style, Kirby's Dream Land 3 is a unique entry for Kirby on the Super NES that shows another side of the series.
