The idea of the Wii sounded crazy at the time, but it really made for some fun games. I enjoyed countless nights of this game with my family, it didn't matter if any of us were good or bad at it, it would always be enjoyable.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the awaited sequel to melee with a surprisingly lengthy and fun story mode called "Subspace Emissary". Compared to Melee, Brawl is slower, floatier, and introduced a controversial mechanic where you have a 1% chance of tripping and being vulnerable. It is a lot of people's entry to the Smash games. What's crazier is it is probably one of the first crossover games with Sonic and Snake being playable characters

Survey voice

Zam / 20s / Male

The trade-off for being the least competitively inclined game in the series is having the best single-player content in Subspace Emissary, which is something I hope to see in the next Smash game if and when it comes out. I had tons of fun playing casually with friends as well.

Lucas / 20s / Male

My first Smash Bros. game, and it was just endless joy. I learned more about Nintendo's vast array of games and characters through it and had a lot of fun playing it with friends and family.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess was created to be, in some ways, a true spiritual successor to the legacy left behind by Ocarina of Time. Despite Wind Waker, the previous 3D entry in the series, being generally well recieved for the direction it took the series, the game failed meet Nintendo's expectations in terms of sales. Twilight Princess gave fans the "realistic" and "adult" Zelda title that many had been asking for for years, and at the time was the best selling Zelda game ever released, revitalizing the fans' interest in the series. As the first game with an ESRB rating of T (Teen) in the series, Twilight Princess was one of the darker stories in the series, having Link travel between his world and a mysterious dimension known as the Twilight Realm, which had begun to bleed into Hyrule. The game's progression is quite reminiscent of that of Ocarina of Time, with Link learning to be a hero as he completes three dungeons, eventually obtaining the Master Sword and being dubbed the Hero of Twilight. Like other entries in the series, Link can obtain new items along the journey, as well as Heart Pieces, to increase his health. In addition to the improved horseback combat which allows you to use your sword and other weapons while riding Eponda, Link gains the ability to transform into Wolf Link, which offers new abilities for combat and exploration. While development of Twilight Princess was intended for the Gamecube, it was decided late into its development to also create a Wii version. This version included motion controls for actions such as swinging the sword, as well as motion controlled aiming for items like the Bow, a feature that would carry onto later entries in the series. The Wii version also features an inverted world from that of the Gamecube counterpart, featuring a right-handed Link and inverted map.

The Mario franchise pivots to space and sends the plucky plumber careening though the stars and among unique, tiny planets in search of power stars to rescue Princess Peach and aid new companion Rosalina. The game's cosmic theme and unique environments and stage structure reemphasizes why Mario games feel like such wondrous experiences, and carries forward the pioneering spirit of N64 classics like Super Mario 64.

Survey voice

Jori / 40s / Male

I love how the game starts in a simple, almost cozy way, then suddenly expands into space where everything becomes unpredictable. Planets are tiny worlds with their own gravity, and every stage feels like a new idea instead of just another level. What really stands out to me is the sense of wonder. I am constantly being surprised by how movement works, how gravity shifts, and how I can run upside down or launch from one planet to another. It never stops feeling fresh, even when I understand the mechanics. I also appreciate how smooth and controlled it feels despite the chaos of space. Even when the camera and gravity are doing wild things, the movement still feels tight and responsive, like I can always trust Mario no matter what is happening around him. And then there is the music. It adds so much emotion and scale to everything I do. Even simple platforming feels important because the soundtrack makes it feel like I am part of something huge and beautiful.

Kevin

Honestly I prefer 64 and Sunshine, which have more freedom in exploration, but the mission design is certainly good, and it delivers Wii-era top-level graphics and music, so Super Mario Galaxy really is indispensable for the Wii.

A lot of players back then weren't able to play Monster Hunter Tri, as it was the first time the series was placed on a Nintendo console: the Wii. Strangely enough, it was a bit barebones compared to the games that came before and after it. Since Capcom rebuilt the engine from scratch, they had to slash the monster roster and cut four entire weapon classes just to get the game to run on Nintendo's white box. What we got in return was the birth of Moga Village, the debut of the Switch Axe, and the introduction of the infamous underwater swimming mechanics. It was also the only Monster Hunter game to have splitscreen co-op, albeit limited to the arena.

Since it was the first Monster Hunter series game I ever touched, I was able to fully enjoy even the underwater combat that was unpopular among players who'd played through the series. Coming from the Xenosaga Trilogy, Monolith Soft starts its spiritual spinoff in the WII. Xenoblade Chronicles is a JRPG that pushed the WII to its limits. What it lacks in texture, it made up through sheer scale. The world Bionis is wonderful to explore due to very large environments with large creatures to fight. All while being able to see the Giant Mechonis anywhere you go. XC1 is a technical feat on the WII but it also boasts an excellent story and worldbuilding that would be felt in the games to come.
