’m very much a diehard Persona fan, and while I wouldn’t say Persona 3 Portable is the best entry in the series due to some of the compromises made to fit the PSP hardware, I still think it’s a phenomenal game. Despite the downgraded presentation in certain areas, it retains the compelling story, characters, and themes that made Persona 3 so memorable. What truly sets Persona 3 Portable apart is the introduction of the female protagonist.

Before I knew about the PS2 version, Portable was my first Persona 3 experience. It featured a hopeful story about death and a well-rounded cast of broken people who eventually found themselves through each other. Sure, young me was drawn in by the edgy exterior, but looking back as an adult, this is one of the most excellent and mature narrative experiences the PSP had to offer with an addictive JRPG and dungeon-crawling loop.

The social links in this game have deeper meaning. I mean the difference in how your friendship with Junpei as an example is so much better. I loved playing as the female MC and romancing Akihiko-senpai and Shinjiro-senpai haha. Persona 3 for me is the best in persona series as well since the weight of fighting in the real world is more palpable than in an alternate dimension.

Monster Hunter Portable 3rd is last main line Monster Hunter game released on the PSP, and is centered around Yukumo village. The game introduces new maps, as well as remakes of some older maps. It also introduces new monsters, such as the fan favorite Zinogre.

God Eater helped prove that you can in fact lay a proper challenge to the dominant species, in this case, Monster Hunter. By adopting a slick, speedy anime-inspired style, God Eater and its expanded edition God Eater Burst catered to players looking for an alternative option to the king of PSP hunting games. Players could switch between weapon modes rapidly when using their God Arcs, swapping instantly between melee, gun, and eater forms to tackle the fast-based battles and fearsome Aragami foes. They could also express themselves and min-max their power by creating customized projectiles and gimmicks in the bullet editor, able to break the game with the right combination of bullet patterns. God Eater also distinguished itself by focusing on companionship and allowing even solo players to hunt alongside NPC partners, relieving some of the lonelieness on a platform with limited online functionality like the PSP.

Patapon is a rhythm game with a twist, as you take control of an army using your drums. Play specific beats to order your army to advance, attack, or retreat, based on what your army needs. In between missions, you can adjust your armies and equip better weapons to help you face and defeat harder and harder challenges.

Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy expounds on what made the original Dissidia great, and amps it up to 12 (pun intended) with some more fan-favorite characters added to the roster. This version also features addition of the Assist system, providing even more openings for combos and utility in a battle by pairing a character with an off-field character that can be summoned on occasion. The plot of Dissidia also gets a further expansion, showing what happened in the 12th cycle before the final one that happens in the original Dissidia. It also gives more endgame content, like a new Superboss at the end of an optional story, and more customization in additional skins for each character.

Even though I tend to be pretty bad at fighting games, Dissidia has such a good story that I played it for endless hours anyway. Even though I knew almost none of the characters at the time due to having only played Crisis Core and FF4, each of the characters had great stories. I'm really looking forward to replaying it one of these days now that I've played more of the mainline games.

Incredible combat in 3D space, and there were a lot of possible strategies to employ especially with summons and booster accessories. There were tons of secrets to unlock too, like Prishe and Feral Chaos, and hidden equipment and shops you can unlock by exploring the map.

The secret missing link in the Metal Gear Series (missing in part because the PSP wasn't the most popular platform), Peace Walker served as the template that informed the development of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and its prequel, Ground Zeroes. The gameplay format of recruiting new soldiers from the battlefield and building up the Mother Base headquarters. It also narratively formed the missing link between Metal Gear Solid 3, 4, and V, exploring the motivations of Big Boss and his companions as they separately struggle to live up to their impression of their mentor's legacy through various world-historical crises.

I have a lot of fond memories with this game. I played this a lot with my brothers and relatives. We would spend the whole day doing different kinds of missions, like tranquilizing a Rathalos in the collaboration mission. The gameplay was really fun, and there were a lot of weapons that were both cool and funny, like the “Box Tank,” which is basically a cardboard box that you can use alone or with a friend and fire explosives like a tank.

Tekken 6 first released on PlayStation Portable. This was catered to Tekken players who want to bring and play Tekken anywhere. Surely a huge improvement from its predecessor, new mechanics have also been added here such as Rage, where once you get to at least 5% HP, your attacks will start to hurt more. This game also improved the combat system by adding the Bound status which enables you to continue your juggles and combos a bit more.

Set before the events of Jak II, Daxter follows the story of Jak's Ottsel sidekick as he goes around Haven City as a small-time bug exterminator while he searches for a way to save Jak. With an arsenal of weapons, control Daxter as he platforms across several stages uncovering the rising threat that would come to be known as the Metalheads.

It's a much smaller game than any of the mainline console games and leans closer to a 3d platformer than an action platformer. I think I 100%-ed it in one weekend in bed while I was sick. But I still enjoyed it quite a bit.

Final Fantasy Type-0's orginal PSP release was an ambitiout title that reaches similar heights as Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker and even Square Enix's own Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep. As Final Fantasy ARPG, it features a larger scale compared to the acclaimed Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core. 14 Playable characters, each with thier own playstyle and allusions to traditional FF roles gives players much more to play with than Crisis Core and KHBBS combined. It also features an overworld for players to conduct military operations in. While darker, bleaker, and more violent than usual, It is nonetheless a classic Final Fantasy premise that involves a plot centering 4 nations each with thier own Crystals. Square Enix was a pushing the limits of handheld consoles during its late 2000s - early 2010s era and Final Fantasy Type 0 was indeed the culmination of all of it. Its a shame that it was never released outside of Japan until its remaster years later

LocoRoco is a whimsical platformer set in a colorful world populated by the eponymous LocoRocos and the MuiMui, but their peaceful existence changes when the evil Moja appear to conquer their planet! LocoRoco is unique in that you don't directly control the LocoRocos but rather the environment itself! Using the PSP's shoulder buttons, you can tilt the very earth to lead the LocoRocos through each stage so that they can combine with others to grow in size to solve puzzles and eventually overcome the evil Mojos.
