The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild innovated how open-world games worked. It was one of the first games that trusted its players to explore and enjoy the world as they liked. The game emphasized non-linear exploration and creative puzzle solving, where the world interacts with itself, like starting a fire in the grass to create a draft to glide on. Wrapped in a timeless tale of a Hero defeating evil and rescuing the princess.

I think I have 100% this game 5 times now. I don't mind if my previous saves get deleted cause I'd be more than happy to play it all over again. The characters are great but I especially love Zelda the most because of her determination and strength. Also props to the guy I always buy ancient cores from in Hateno village whenever it's raining. The music is also great! Nothing beats hearing the piano music when a guardian sets its eye on you or when you find refuge at a stable after a whole day of fighting monsters and then you hear music from a flute that signals you're finally safe from monsters. My favorite aspect of the game though would have to be the exploration. I love just walking around the world and taking in the sights, nature, and infrastructure BOTW Hyrule has to offer. I love Hateno and Lurelin village the most! My only issue with this game is the final boss which was a bit too easy.

Jori / 40s / Male

I like how it drops me into the world and immediately trusts me to figure things out. There is no strict path forcing me forward. Instead, I just look at the horizon and decide for myself what mountain to climb, what ruin to explore, or what direction feels interesting in the moment. What really stands out to me is how the world rewards curiosity. Even a small detour can turn into a full adventure. I might just be gathering materials, then suddenly I am fighting a Guardian, solving a shrine puzzle, or discovering something I did not expect at all. I also love how survival mechanics are simple but meaningful. Cooking, weather, stamina, and weapons all matter in a way that makes every journey feel a bit unpredictable. Nothing feels like it is just there for decoration. Everything has a purpose in how I move through the world.

Genshin Impact is an anime-style open-world action RPG, filled with magic and style. Follow a traveler of your choice in uncovering all there is to know about the world of Genshin: its places, people, and stories. For players who enjoy gacha character collection with enticing lore and elemental combat, this game will interest you with various gamemodes and puzzles that will quench your thirst for adventure and exploration.

Genshin is a big work you could call the one that created the currently trendy anime-style open-world game trend, and the shock of a work with console-worthy quality being playable for free and even on smartphones is, thinking about it now, still insane. Its impact on the game industry was tremendous too, greatly contributing to raising the quality of subsequent smartphone games. In this game, the fun comes from clearing exploration and combat by making full use of gimmicks called elemental reactions, and I think it's amazing how combat that isn't simply about hitting or not hitting a weakness gives new meaning to using characters. The story is complex and hard to get into, but since it's designed so that even free-to-play players get rewards the more they play, the point that you can keep enjoying it forever is a happy one too.

Lina / 30s / Female

It's been a while since I really played Genshin, but there were quests that I really enjoyed completing, like the story of Dainsleif's friend and Ruu in Tsurumi Island. Another good memory I have about the game was when I reached the floating island in Qingyun Peak and enjoyed the music and view for a few minutes. Since it's been so long since I last played, I've been having a hard time catching up on quests and grinding to level up my characters. I still keep the game on my phone in case I want to return and have time to grind.

The sequel to Breath of the Wild. The stage of adventure is the same, but sky and underground maps were added, powering up exploration even further. It keeps all of Breath of the Wild's appeal, and now you can build vehicles like cars and airships by combining materials yourself, powering up the freedom of puzzle-solving even more.

It's a brilliantly constructed game, which expands on the already brilliant BOTW, and there is nothing else like it. The story is excellent and the fighting is interesting, but also manageable for people who don't want to. The puzzles are excellent and I think it retains a lot of the charm of the older games.

- A Japanese-style game made by the overseas game studio "Sucker Punch" - A wonderful game where you feel respect for Japan everywhere, having properly researched Tsushima - The sword-fighting action is genuinely fun too - The action of quietly taking out enemies by stealth is also excellent - The graphics are extremely beautiful, and just riding a horse across Tsushima to explore is fun on its own - There's a lot to grind, with plenty of collection and upgrade elements like athletic-style minigames, searching for hot springs, and finding training grounds - The characters have lots of personality and memorable lines. The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap was the final Zelda game developed by Capcom, releasing on the Game Boy Advance in 2004. This game has Link meet with Ezlo, a talking hat that grants Link the ability to shrink down his size and explore a world that cannot easily be seen by the naked eye. Along the way, Link will meet the Picori, a race of tiny creatures, in order to forge the Four Sword and take down the evil mage Vaati. While certainly smaller in scope than other entries in the series with only four main dungeons, the game offers clever dungeon design which has Link shrinking and growing at various locations in order to solve various puzzles. Like other Zelda games, The Minish Cap offers a variety of items that Link can find within dungeons and use to explore more of the world and find hidden secrets. Fans of the more traditional Zelda titles like A Link to the Past will love this handheld adventure.

A special entry even within the Legend of Zelda series. You clear gimmicks and dungeons while shrinking with the power of the Minish Cap. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess was created to be, in some ways, a true spiritual successor to the legacy left behind by Ocarina of Time. Despite Wind Waker, the previous 3D entry in the series, being generally well recieved for the direction it took the series, the game failed meet Nintendo's expectations in terms of sales. Twilight Princess gave fans the "realistic" and "adult" Zelda title that many had been asking for for years, and at the time was the best selling Zelda game ever released, revitalizing the fans' interest in the series. As the first game with an ESRB rating of T (Teen) in the series, Twilight Princess was one of the darker stories in the series, having Link travel between his world and a mysterious dimension known as the Twilight Realm, which had begun to bleed into Hyrule. The game's progression is quite reminiscent of that of Ocarina of Time, with Link learning to be a hero as he completes three dungeons, eventually obtaining the Master Sword and being dubbed the Hero of Twilight. Like other entries in the series, Link can obtain new items along the journey, as well as Heart Pieces, to increase his health. In addition to the improved horseback combat which allows you to use your sword and other weapons while riding Eponda, Link gains the ability to transform into Wolf Link, which offers new abilities for combat and exploration. While development of Twilight Princess was intended for the Gamecube, it was decided late into its development to also create a Wii version. This version included motion controls for actions such as swinging the sword, as well as motion controlled aiming for items like the Bow, a feature that would carry onto later entries in the series. The Wii version also features an inverted world from that of the Gamecube counterpart, featuring a right-handed Link and inverted map.

I loved the God of War trilogy in the Greek Mythology and it showed me Kratos in his best and worst days while going rip and tear over his enemies shown in the action-packed gameplay. The new God of War in the Norse Mythology is significantly differently and it takes on a more adventure route while focusing more on the story that makes me appreciate him as a character also shown through gameplay. Ludonarrative is very important to me when it comes to games and everything about God of War (2018) is that taken to a higher level.

I hate hate hate open world games. Most of them feel like they don't respect your time. Collect 100 of these pointless things. Travel from point a to point b to point c 20 times. You know how long it takes to go from point a to point b? Here's an npc to escort and you have to match their very slow pace. The abilities you have gained? Here's a section where you can't use any of them for an hour. Here's a map with 5000 pins of pointless things to do. Some of them can give you a costume that does nothing or 2 exp out of the 5000 you need to level up. Witcher 3 famously starts with a side quest where you need to retrieve someone's pan. People found it endearing. I found it offensive. I hate open world games so much. But Insomniac's Spider-Man will always get credit from me for creating a traversal mechanic in an open world game that is so much fun, you forget that there's a fast travel mechanic.

Super Mario Sunshine had a lot to live up to as the follow-up to the powerhouse that was Super Mario 64. Following a 6-year crevasse with no Mario main series games, players were champing at the bit to see what was in store for the world's most famous plumber on the Nintendo GameCube. But never satisfied with the same old greatness, Nintendo changed up the formula by introducing FLUDD, a water-spraying backpack that can switch between a Spray Nozzle to blast targets and a Hover Nozzle to lift up and glide through the air. The game's reliance on the Hover Nozzle for navigation took a sharp turn from Mario 64's traditional platforming gameplay focused on Mario's jumping and movement physics. Even the story took an unusual turn for the Mario series, swapping out the usual Bowser-kidnaps-the-princess routine for a kind of mystery, in which Mario arrives in tropical Delfino Plaza for a holiday, only to be framed for the crime of covering the scenic landscape in toxic goo by the evasive Shadow Mario. To clear his name, Mario must travel through the worlds connected to Delfino Plaza and collect Shine Sprites, the game's primary collectible, to advance the story. The run-and-jump platforming gameplay of Mario 64 came back with a vengeance in the game's secret levels, in which Mario would lose access to FLUDD, and need to progress through a (often teeth-gnashingly diffcult) platforming gauntlet to receive a Shine Sprite. Super Mario Sunshine was also the first 3D Mario game to allow Mario to ride Yoshi, although Yoshi also bore a newfound weakness to going in the water – quite unfortunate considering their surroundings. The beautiful water effects, though, really demonstrated the jump up in graphics from the N64 to the GameCube, and the memorable soundtrack and beach landscape made for a unique identity for Mario on the new console. Although it's not his most famous adventure, with a jump in difficulty from its predecessor and the surprising changes in mechanics marking it as a black sheep of the 3D Mario titles in a sense, Super Mario Sunshine took a bold direction with a famous series, and came through as an unforgettable entry despite a few rough patches.

A masterpiece, but the difficulty is famous too. A difficulty that even people who 100%'d 64 struggle with. Though divisive at the time of its release for its cartoonish, cel-shaded look, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker proved to be a bold and memorable departure from the original formula, casting Link as a lone sailor trekking between islands and dungeons on a vast, trackless sea. Its simple but evocative art style has endured well past the point where the high-detail "realism" prized by gamers of the time had diminishing returns, and subsequent outings on other platforms have underscored how distinct art direction overrides any technological extravagance, and infuses game worlds with a genuine sense of wonder.

Zelda's first toon style? At release I thought it was a bit gross, but once I played it, it fit really well. In terms of adventuring the vast ocean, from around the midgame the story cuts off abruptly and there are scenes where I got lost about what to do, but including that, I enjoyed stopping by various islands. When the weather suddenly turned bad on the open sea and a giant squid appeared, it became a trauma at the time and I couldn't boot the game up, leaving it unfinished for months, that's a memory too. The toon-style Link has lots of reactions and expressions and is pretty cute.

Go to any list of the greatest video games of all time, and you will find The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in the top five, if not at the very top of the list. Released in 1998, the game was truly revolutionary for its time, and introduced so many of the typical elements of 3D gaming that we still see today. Ocarina of Time features a story which, while perhaps simple on the surface, is a tale that symbolizes the feeling of being forced to grow up and leave the comfort of your childhood to set out on a grand adventure, and perfectly encompasses the hero's journey. We see Link, a young boy living alone in the Kokiri Forest embark on a journey that takes him through mountains, deserts, underwater, and through time itself, in order to become the Hero of Time and defeat a great evil that has set out to overtake Hyrule. The central "Gimmick" is based around travelling between time as the younger child Link and adult Link, which both have their own dungeons to tackle and items exclusive to them. The game was extremely innovative in the way that it introduced "Z-Targeting" (L-Targeting for later entries), which allowed for seamless combat in a 3D landscape by letting you lock on to enemies and attack them with your arsenal of weapons, a mechanic which many games still implement today. OoT also implemented a "context-sensitive button", which allowed the A button to have multiple functions (Roll, Talk, Open, etc), depending on where your character was situated, which was very influential on subsequent games. Featuring some of the best dungeon design the series has ever known, the game is still extremely popular among fans of the series, speedrunners, and fans of gaming as a whole.

After the grand success of Ocarina of Time, the Zelda team decided to create a game which utilized the assets from that game to create something totally new and unique. What we got was The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time, which saw Link set out on a personal journey to find a lost friend, eventually encountering the mischevious Skull Kid and finding a strange new land known as Termina. The powerful item known as Majora's Mask held by the Skull Kid would destroy Termina in 72 hours, and it was up to Link to save Termina and retrieve the mask. Like Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask features a central gimmick based around time manipulation, but this game instead revolves around trying to complete tasks such as the dungeons or side quests, then using the Ocarina of Time to reset back to Day 1 before the 72 hours run up. Larger objectives like dungeon completion and obtaining items / heart pieces hold over between cycles, though story and quest progress reset each time, which creates a strong need to plan out your tasks before each 72 hour run, as missing a timed event would mean going back to Day 1. The game also introduces a unique group of items called masks. These masks give Link unique abilities when equipped, such as running quickly, triggering NPC side quests, transforming into other races, as well as... staying up all night and dancing? The core gameplay from Ocarina of Time, such as Z-Targeting and the context-sensitive button systems, are present in this game as well. While the game's main story is much smaller in scope than that of its predecessor, it makes up for that by introducing a multitude of side quests based around interactions with NPCs. The game's story also tackles somewhat darker themes than OoT, such as grief, and has gained a bit of a reputation for being the "creepy Zelda". Certainly one of the most unique titles in the series, Majora's Mask is considered by many fans to be even better than the game that came before it.

While viewed by many as a 2D version of Minecraft, Terraria capitalizes where Minecraft falls short: Level Progression. While both games feature the core dynamic of mining for resources and equipping different tiers of Armor crafted from various metals, Terraria establishes its core gameplay loop into defeating Bosses in order to obtain better equipment, and unlock harder content. Terraria also has four main classes to choose from, making progression unique for each class, while retaining the same level of achievement and satisfaction for defeating its increasingly difficult Bosses. Easy to get into, and is highly addictive once you understand the core gameplay loop and you start progressing through the game.

Phantom Hourglass is a direct sequel to 2002's Wind Waker. It's a largely overlooked title in the legendary franchise, but it definitely deserves some love and attention. The game is centered around the Nintendo DS's touchscreen. The prime example of this is having players chart their routes at sea in advance instead handing over direct control of the ship. It sounds gimmicky for the sake of it, but Phantom Hourglass is able to create an immersive and worthwhile experience despite its reliance on a bygone novelty in the DS's stylus-reliant touchscreen.

Donkey Kong 64 is a massive adventure emblematic of the "collect-a-thon" genre, featuring sprawling levels allowing mostly free exploration. Players can take whatever route they like in searching for a variety of items like Golden Bananas and colored bananas, a certain number of which are required to progress to future levels. Five Kongs are unlocked with progression, each of which has their own set of abilities and collectibles, so players must swap between Kongs at a Tag Barrel to reach areas and grab collectibles which require a specific Kong. Once you unlock a new Kong or a new ability, that's your cue to return to the places you visited before and find new secrets which you couldn't reach before, in a game loop which encourages heavy backtracking and full exploration of every level.

Sam Porter Bridges does Australia in Kojima Productions' cinematically-infused sequel to Death Stranding, and the results are as magnetic as the original. Flipping the first game's theme of connecting communities on its head, Death Stranding 2 reckons with the sense of loss and grief that can triggered by severing a connection that was made, as Sam is charged with reconnecting the Australian continent and linking it up to America. The series' signature hybrid of traversal and infrastructure-building returns, with new twists in the form of a base ship, the D.H.V. Magellan, and an increased emphasis on laying the groundwork for vehicular travel by reestablishing a cross-country highway network and high-speed monorail. Additional focus on combat also heightens the sense of tension and threat, as the factions that push back against Sam and his allies' attempts to reconnect the world are more well-equipped than ever.

Environments are bigger and more interactive, enemies are smarter and more reactive, and more gameplay styles are allowed. And the combination of all these changes increases the ways combat encounters can be dealt with. As with the first game, The Last of Us Part 2 is still primarily a character-focused narrative game. GTAV was by far the most ambitious, and most awaited release from the Developers at the time (at least until before GTA 6 was announced to be in development). GTAV greatly expands the explorable areas in free-roam, compared to its predecessors which only featured only a smaller area. Story-wise, GTAV presented a unique storyline with three Main Characters with interconnected stories, along with different endings depending on your final choice. The game takes its role playing aspect to another level by expanding the Post-Game and Online content to include stock market trading, owning Properties, and managing different Businesses, which makes the game's replayability near endless. GTAV stands the test of time, and to this day holds a respectable amount of Daily Concurrent players, a testament of how great the game was, and how well taken care of the game is many years after its launch.

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD

Survey scores · avg 4.8/5

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD is a remastered version of the Gamecube classic, offering beautiful improved graphics, integration of Gamepad controls, and several improvements to the gameplay which made it an easier starting point for newcomers to the series. The story of the Wind Waker is a classic tale that sees Link, a somewhat lazy boy living on Outset Island, take up the mantle of Hero of the Winds on a grand journey across the Great Sea to rescue his sister Aryll and save the world from the forces of evil. The Gamepad was implemented to allow for easy aiming with gyropscopic controls, quicker access to item equipment via the touch screen, as well as a map that could be easily viewed from the Gamepad screen. Many of the complaints of the original game, such as slow pacing when traveling the Great Sea, were address with the introduction of the Swift Sail, as well as streamlining of the Triforce Hunt Quest. These changes make the game extremely accessible, to the point where many would consider it to be the definitive version of the game.

Twilight Princess HD offers a rich and somewhat dark story, based around Link defending Hyrule from the invasion of a myserious dimension known as the Twilight Realm. Several uses of the Gamepad that were used in Wind Waker HD, such as gyroscopic aiming, touch screen item equipping, as well as easier access to the map, were all brought to this version of the game, breathing life into the classic Zelda title and making it even easier to access for newcomers.
