The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild innovated how open-world games worked. It was one of the first games that trusted its players to explore and enjoy the world as they liked. The game emphasized non-linear exploration and creative puzzle solving, where the world interacts with itself, like starting a fire in the grass to create a draft to glide on. Wrapped in a timeless tale of a Hero defeating evil and rescuing the princess.

I think I have 100% this game 5 times now. I don't mind if my previous saves get deleted cause I'd be more than happy to play it all over again. The characters are great but I especially love Zelda the most because of her determination and strength. Also props to the guy I always buy ancient cores from in Hateno village whenever it's raining. The music is also great! Nothing beats hearing the piano music when a guardian sets its eye on you or when you find refuge at a stable after a whole day of fighting monsters and then you hear music from a flute that signals you're finally safe from monsters. My favorite aspect of the game though would have to be the exploration. I love just walking around the world and taking in the sights, nature, and infrastructure BOTW Hyrule has to offer. I love Hateno and Lurelin village the most! My only issue with this game is the final boss which was a bit too easy.

Jori / 40s / Male

I like how it drops me into the world and immediately trusts me to figure things out. There is no strict path forcing me forward. Instead, I just look at the horizon and decide for myself what mountain to climb, what ruin to explore, or what direction feels interesting in the moment. What really stands out to me is how the world rewards curiosity. Even a small detour can turn into a full adventure. I might just be gathering materials, then suddenly I am fighting a Guardian, solving a shrine puzzle, or discovering something I did not expect at all. I also love how survival mechanics are simple but meaningful. Cooking, weather, stamina, and weapons all matter in a way that makes every journey feel a bit unpredictable. Nothing feels like it is just there for decoration. Everything has a purpose in how I move through the world.

Genshin Impact is an anime-style open-world action RPG, filled with magic and style. Follow a traveler of your choice in uncovering all there is to know about the world of Genshin: its places, people, and stories. For players who enjoy gacha character collection with enticing lore and elemental combat, this game will interest you with various gamemodes and puzzles that will quench your thirst for adventure and exploration.

Genshin is a big work you could call the one that created the currently trendy anime-style open-world game trend, and the shock of a work with console-worthy quality being playable for free and even on smartphones is, thinking about it now, still insane. Its impact on the game industry was tremendous too, greatly contributing to raising the quality of subsequent smartphone games. In this game, the fun comes from clearing exploration and combat by making full use of gimmicks called elemental reactions, and I think it's amazing how combat that isn't simply about hitting or not hitting a weakness gives new meaning to using characters. The story is complex and hard to get into, but since it's designed so that even free-to-play players get rewards the more they play, the point that you can keep enjoying it forever is a happy one too.

It's been a while since I really played Genshin, but there were quests that I really enjoyed completing, like the story of Dainsleif's friend and Ruu in Tsurumi Island. Another good memory I have about the game was when I reached the floating island in Qingyun Peak and enjoyed the music and view for a few minutes. Since it's been so long since I last played, I've been having a hard time catching up on quests and grinding to level up my characters. I still keep the game on my phone in case I want to return and have time to grind.

Elden Ring is the epic love child of FromSoftware, the game developer that is hell-bent on making players turn their controllers into projectiles, and George R.R. Martin, the author who has a knack for creating beloved characters who ultimately meet their end after three chapters. You take on the role of the Tarnished, and you will venture forth through the harsh and unforgiving world of The Lands Between. Players will helm both sword and shield as they weather the landscape of battle unleashed by the gods and their kin. The game is the very definition of sheer will, as it constantly tests players' mettle through the usual soulslike difficulty expected from FromSoftware. Explore the vast reaches of the game's open world, defeat numerous foes and demigods in battle, and strive to become the Elden Lord.

An open-world action RPG etched into gaming history, the finest of the 21st century. Despite its overwhelming difficulty, it has an addictiveness that makes you want to challenge tough enemies again and again, and the sense of accomplishment the moment you win is an appeal you can rarely taste in other games. On top of an enormous amount of content, it also features highly free character building through diverse builds, boasting a level of polish that lets you keep playing for hundreds of hours. The DLC adds new weapons, areas, and bosses, letting you enjoy a new adventure with a volume rivaling the main game. The breadth of exploration and build-building expands even further, and it has the appeal of keeping you playing long after clearing it.

The only game that I've ever played that I'd call a "true open-world". It always amazed me how after the tutorial, you're free to do whatever... enter Caelid underleved, fight the Tree Sentinel with beginner equipment, or just simply explore. Despite the difficulty, none of the fights ever felt unfair (except for Consort Radahn...), and every inch of exploration felt marvel. Also, unironically, this game made me feel fear no other games have done before. The fear of the unknown, fear of death, it was crazy feeling all sorts of emotions when I was playing this game.

It's a brilliantly constructed game, which expands on the already brilliant BOTW, and there is nothing else like it. The story is excellent and the fighting is interesting, but also manageable for people who don't want to. The puzzles are excellent and I think it retains a lot of the charm of the older games.

- A Japanese-style game made by the overseas game studio "Sucker Punch" - A wonderful game where you feel respect for Japan everywhere, having properly researched Tsushima - The sword-fighting action is genuinely fun too - The action of quietly taking out enemies by stealth is also excellent - The graphics are extremely beautiful, and just riding a horse across Tsushima to explore is fun on its own - There's a lot to grind, with plenty of collection and upgrade elements like athletic-style minigames, searching for hot springs, and finding training grounds - The characters have lots of personality and memorable lines. "I threw my honor away on the beach!"

One of the best games I have ever played on the PS4. The graphics were so realistic that I truly felt like I was strolling through Tsushima. I really liked how the game hides the HUD whenever you explore the map, it encourages you to focus on the scenery and surroundings, which I can honestly say were breathtaking.

Cyberpunk 2077 is a first-person RPG based on the tabletop game, Cyberpunk. Players assume the role of V in the neon-sprawling Night City, taking on missions and gigs that can lead to different outcomes depending on the player's choices. A massive selection of weapons, cyberware, and abilities allows players to create countless builds for V, giving every playthrough a fresh experience.

I know Cyberpunk 2077 had a really rocky launch, and it actually took me three years to finally play it after the Phantom Liberty DLC came out. And honestly, Phantom Liberty really made V feel like he was in an actual spy movie. But underneath all the bugs and crashes, there was a genuinely good game. The characters felt alive, and romances like Panam’s really made it feel like I was connecting with someone. I’ve always been a fan of the cyberpunk genre, from Blade Runner to Ghost in the Shell and Altered Carbon. This game really made me feel like I was a merc trying to survive in an unforgiving city of sin, chrome, and bullets.

Ronald / 20s / Male

I really enjoyed the story of this game, it really hooked me with the struggles of V and how he/she will do anything to survive. The choices you make throughout the game can really shape your relationship with your friends and how the game would end. The skills you can give your character in game really make every single playthrough different. You can create havoc for your enemies if you want or just chill and drive alongside others on the road.

"Red Dead Redemption 2 is GTA with Cowboys. The ""2"" in the name is sort of a misnomer kind of how Final Fantasy games are all not related. Red Dead Redemption 2 is more of a prequel to the first game. It's closer to a massive 100 hour cowboy simulator with an absurd amount of attention to detail. This ranges from interactions, dialogue, even in-game physics and horse poop. This is a masterclass by Rockstar in major emotional damage, immersive gunplay with cowboy weapons, and horsing around."

Red Dead Redemption 2 was such an amazing and beautiful game. I already loved the first game, but the second one grabbed my heart and completely destroyed me. Arthur felt like someone I actually knew, almost like a close friend I went on this long journey with. That ending was one of the few moments in gaming that actually made me cry. You can really tell the devs poured so much emotion into this game.

Stef / 20s / Female

This is not just a game, but a whole experience. RDR2 warped my preferences in narratives, and I began to seek out games with more positive endings, as much as possible. It also raised my standards for open-world games.

Together, Kratos and his son, Atreus, adventure through the mythical ancient realms of from Norse Mythology. I loved the God of War trilogy in the Greek Mythology and it showed me Kratos in his best and worst days while going rip and tear over his enemies shown in the action-packed gameplay. The new God of War in the Norse Mythology is significantly differently and it takes on a more adventure route while focusing more on the story that makes me appreciate him as a character also shown through gameplay. Ludonarrative is very important to me when it comes to games and everything about God of War (2018) is that taken to a higher level.

The second part of the long and beloved Xenoblade saga, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 switches things up with a new protagonist, Rex, and a new take on its famously deep combat system, one that prioritizes the partnership between characters and their living Blade weapons, like Pyra and Mithra. With a deep and moving story, a massive sense of scale, and a substantial addition in the form of the Torna: The Golden Country DLC, Xenoblade 2 forms a critical part of the trilogy that helped establish the series' footing on the original Nintendo Switch.

A wonderful masterpiece. Of all the games I've played, its story hit me the hardest, and it's a shame I can only give it a perfect 5. The gameplay was consistently enjoyable overall, but I'd dock points because trying to 100% it takes an absurd amount of time. The graphics were beautiful, at least by the standards of the time. The battle themes are of course always cool, and the insert song "Counter Attack" that plays at various points in the story comes at the perfect moment, playing right when you want it and sticking in your ears. Beyond the main pair Pyra and Mythra, even the enemy character designs are top-notch. There are tons of appealing characters that make it easy to empathize with the enemy side too.

I hate hate hate open world games. Most of them feel like they don't respect your time. Collect 100 of these pointless things. Travel from point a to point b to point c 20 times. You know how long it takes to go from point a to point b? Here's an npc to escort and you have to match their very slow pace. The abilities you have gained? Here's a section where you can't use any of them for an hour. Here's a map with 5000 pins of pointless things to do. Some of them can give you a costume that does nothing or 2 exp out of the 5000 you need to level up. Witcher 3 famously starts with a side quest where you need to retrieve someone's pan. People found it endearing. I found it offensive. I hate open world games so much. But Insomniac's Spider-Man will always get credit from me for creating a traversal mechanic in an open world game that is so much fun, you forget that there's a fast travel mechanic.

The critically-acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV is Square Enix's second attempt at an MMORPG after the success of Final Fantasy XI. Following its disastrous 2010 release, the game was brought offline after a world-ending in-game event before being released again as A Realm Reborn in 2013. Now, Final Fantasy XIV is considered one of the best MMORPGs of all time, with its second major story arc currently underway. The game is also well known for its generous free trial, which currently includes A Realm Reborn, the award-winning Heavensward expansion, Stormblood, and the critically-acclaimed Shadowbringers expansion. This trial lets players play the game for free with no restrictions on playtime up to Level 80, allowing them meet new people, as well as experience amazing writing, fantastic music, and a lovable cast of characters.

- First off, the story that's synonymous with FF14 is very interesting, moving me enough to think "please make it a movie," it was really great. While MMOs commonly have a custom of basically skipping the story and immediately grinding levels, I think putting effort into a story you can enjoy even solo is a wonderful idea, and precisely because of that the world is established, and the game atmosphere born from players enjoying it while understanding that world is very nice. - The battles are fun. Later MMOs have copied its battle gimmicks and systems many times, but the reason I still feel FF14 is good is that "because the gimmicks and enemy attacks are firmly linked to the story background, the immersion into combat is different." Rather than an impressive-graphics follow-up game that merely inherits FF14's gimmick ideas, the reason I feel FF14 is good is precisely that it sublimates them into gimmicks you can solve only because all players understand the enemy's background and world through a highly satisfying story, things like "this boss is a fire god, so wouldn't getting in the water be good?" or "this boss battle's field is set up as a special ship built specifically to defeat the boss lurking in this sea, so wouldn't activating the ship's device in time with the boss's attack timing be good?" - The BGM is good. I'd never been that interested in BGM, but around the time I entered the Stormblood arc in FF14's story, I was suddenly struck, the BGM is just plain good. Not only the tracks for each area but also those for dungeons and boss fights are all highly polished, and I experienced the amazingness of BGM for the first time. Not just BGM, but the attention to all the sound is tremendous; for example, walking sounds change depending on the floor material and shoe material, and you can even choose whether sound is picked up from the camera position or the character position. These many fine details connect to the feeling of not merely playing a game, but living in FF14's world as a character. - The amount of content. This may partly be content volume that comes precisely from a long-running game, but the breadth and variety of content is enormous, and every player is made to have an aptitude for some kind of content. That's why I think the player population keeps growing even after running this long. - Character design. Later games may have higher freedom or be prettier, but despite having so many people on a server, it delivers seamlessness with no lag while producing maximum-level graphics, I think. Also, the freedom of character creation is on the narrow side, but fine attention to detail can be firmly reflected as individuality. At a glance, people tend to think character creation is better the more freedom it has, but in FF14 that isn't necessarily so. That's because the current freedom is designed not to break FF14's world. Keeping a fantasy world while allowing character creation with various individual races (burly races, simple humans, cat people, rabbit people, tiny people, beast-folk), the current state is just right.

- The MMORPG successor to FF11 - A super-popular work with hundreds of thousands of players even now - It's an MMORPG, but it also has a story-game side where the main story boasts console-level quality or higher - The battle content is nicely divided by difficulty so that everyone from beginners to advanced players can enjoy it - Since it's a game that's continued for over 10 years, the content is enormous, and trying to do it all would turn you into an old man - For better or worse, all kinds of people are around, so experiencing a bit of a village society, whether that's good or bad, I don't know - There's a lot of trouble in interpersonal relationships, so be careful when you play - The game itself is very fun, but you feel a rut if you keep at it long; since the battle system is being overhauled from patch 8.0, veteran players coming back might find it fun

Show original (日本語)

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an open-world RPG where you play as the Dragonborn, a mortal born with the soul of a dragon, on your quest to defeat the World-Eater, Alduin. Players don't need to rush through the story because there are a lot of sidequests each with their own plotlines that add to the lore of the world you're in. Plus you can get useful weapons, items, or powers. It's fun to choose which race you are playing as because NPCs have different reactions for each. TESV:Skyrim is well-known in the community for the number of mods available that range from cosmetics, UI changes, or just hilarious additions to the game. It's a game that feels different each time you play it because of the freedom you have when building your character and interacting with the world.

I’ve played it on both the PS5 and PC, and I would say the PC experience is better because it gives you access to a wider variety of mods. The reasons it remains one of my favorite games are the same as before: it’s incredibly immersive, the amount of content feels endless, and it gives you the freedom to decide who your character is and what kind of person you want them to be.

The fantasy RPG. The freedom is off the charts, and there are just so many exploration elements. Each quest is intriguing and rewarding. The community is strong too, with tons of mods, so it's still perfectly fun to play now.

I was moved by the graphics that recreate the beauty of nature. It was fun to adventure freely surrounded by beautiful nature in an open world. Unlike the previous game, it was nice that you can use weapons other than the katana. Despite being an open world with beautiful graphics, there was almost no load time, which impressed me.

With many weapon types, it's recommended for action game fans. Also, like in die-and-retry games, boss fights are designed to be hard to win on the first try, making it a game you can enjoy even while getting frustrated.

In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, you take on the role of Geralt of Rivia, a Witcher who is on a quest to find his adopted daughter, Ciri. Throughout your journey, you'll encounter side quests filled with morally complex choices and battle a variety of monsters, ranging from mutated beasts to god-like entities. You also have the option to play Gwent, a highly addictive card mini-game created specifically for the game. While The Witcher 3 is a sequel, it is not necessary to play the previous games to fully enjoy this choice-driven and critically acclaimed RPG!

Cass / 30s / Female

I really loved that the signs and the oil weaknesses were brought over as a battle mechanic in the game. I like the fact that as a player I need to be mindful of which signs and oils to use for exploiting weaknesses, I really felt like a Witcher. I love how there's no good or bad endings with the quests, having to choose which is the lesser evil made me ponder on the choices of this game a lot. 4/5 only on gameplay because of the side quests that breaks the meta, like Geralt is in a hurry to find Ciri but instead he spends time going around doing weird menial tasks. If the side quests were more pressing and felt like Geralt really has to be bothered to do them and because it's on his way, I'd probably rate gameplay a 100%. There are some side quests that can be done after completing the story, but the rewards aren't that valuable at that point.

Thranidr / 55+ / Male

By far the best action RPG made to date. Follows the books relatively closely with the main characters. The quests are far from simple fetch and carry, they add to the story and immersion in the game.

The game utilizes Break-and-Boost battle system in a turn-based format, creating a great opportunity for players to outsmart their opponents. - A masterpiece that reminds you all over again of the appeal of SNES-era pixel-art RPGs - It accurately recreates the style of good old SNES-era RPGs like FF4-6 - The system is a turn-based command RPG, but it's fun with its own unique Break and Boost mechanics - Several protagonists' individual stories unfold - There are elements that link behind the protagonists' stories, and that connects to hidden content - The secret boss is extremely difficult and rewarding - There are customization elements like jobs and subjobs, so you can enjoy building - You can perform special actions like stealing from or fighting townspeople, which is fun; some ordinary NPCs are absurdly strong, which is amusing - A masterpiece that people who love SNES-era Square Enix RPGs are sure to love

A work popular for its Japanese-style graphics and moving story. The distinctive brush-based action is appealing, and while the quirky combat is a little hard to get into, once you get hooked on the story you play forgetting the time. Shadow of the Colossus is art in motion, a quiet, almost serene fantasy adventure where context and worldbuilding are left to the imagination, motivations are clouded in mystery, and you have no choice but to play as Wander, who travels this sacred desolate land with his trusty horse Agro, in search of Colossi, which he must fell in order to bring back Mono, an unconscious woman clad in white. A subversion of the Zelda formula, the world is empty, save for sixteen bosses whose bodies are puzzles in and of themselves, which you must learn to navigate, solve and overcome. We do not know how we got here, who Wander is, and why we must kill sixteen seemingly innocent colossi, and we can only hope the rewards will be worth it...

Proves that games can be works of art, with a minimalistic approach to storytelling and worldbuilding, as well as its minimal controls and tutorials, playing SotC is like adventuring into a forbidden land where you don't know the language and must discover things on your own with no one to handhold you. Sam Porter Bridges does Australia in Kojima Productions' cinematically-infused sequel to Death Stranding, and the results are as magnetic as the original. Flipping the first game's theme of connecting communities on its head, Death Stranding 2 reckons with the sense of loss and grief that can triggered by severing a connection that was made, as Sam is charged with reconnecting the Australian continent and linking it up to America. The series' signature hybrid of traversal and infrastructure-building returns, with new twists in the form of a base ship, the D.H.V. Magellan, and an increased emphasis on laying the groundwork for vehicular travel by reestablishing a cross-country highway network and high-speed monorail. Additional focus on combat also heightens the sense of tension and threat, as the factions that push back against Sam and his allies' attempts to reconnect the world are more well-equipped than ever.

I was really addicted to this game back when I was still in high school. The game had really good graphics for its time, and the combat really gave that “oomph” factor for me. It was very satisfying, and you could really feel the impact of each move when your character wind up a greatsword attack. Although the game was technically incomplete and didn’t have traditional fast travel, it still didn’t bother me. Since I enjoyed the journey with my character and his three pawns. I played multiple runs of this game, and it took quite a while before I finally was done with it.

Perhaps the first true open-world life-sim adventure, Shenmue helped break ground on trying to really simulate a place and time, in this case Yokohama of the late 1980s. Ryo Hazuki's revenge-fueled martial arts adventure begins in a tranquil part of the city and, if you so choose, can stay that way as Ryo mixes his breathless hunt for his father's killers with diversions to do odd jobs, speak with the locals, and collect gachapon toys. - The original work of "Like a Dragon: Kiwami 3," released in February 2026 - You can feel a different appeal from past works in Kiryu as he devotes himself to caring for the children as the caretaker of an orphanage in Okinawa - Some characters have their voice actors/designs changed, and personally I prefer the original. The graphics of characters like Mine and Kanda are also better in the original. The remake's facial modeling gives a slightly softer impression and lacks impact - The setting of the mysterious man who becomes the key to this game's story felt strongly like an afterthought and was disappointing, but otherwise it was an Okinawa-flavored story revolving around vested interests in base expansion and resort development

GTAV was by far the most ambitious, and most awaited release from the Developers at the time (at least until before GTA 6 was announced to be in development). GTAV greatly expands the explorable areas in free-roam, compared to its predecessors which only featured only a smaller area. Story-wise, GTAV presented a unique storyline with three Main Characters with interconnected stories, along with different endings depending on your final choice. The game takes its role playing aspect to another level by expanding the Post-Game and Online content to include stock market trading, owning Properties, and managing different Businesses, which makes the game's replayability near endless. In Hong Kong, Ryo can freely choose activities to support his lifestyle, learning martial arts alongside taking part in a variety of minigames to earn money, or collect capsule toys and even play well-constructed ports of classic Sega arcade titles.
