Elden Ring is the epic love child of FromSoftware, the game developer that is hell-bent on making players turn their controllers into projectiles, and George R.R. Martin, the author who has a knack for creating beloved characters who ultimately meet their end after three chapters. You take on the role of the Tarnished, and you will venture forth through the harsh and unforgiving world of The Lands Between. Players will helm both sword and shield as they weather the landscape of battle unleashed by the gods and their kin. The game is the very definition of sheer will, as it constantly tests players' mettle through the usual soulslike difficulty expected from FromSoftware. Explore the vast reaches of the game's open world, defeat numerous foes and demigods in battle, and strive to become the Elden Lord.

An open-world action RPG etched into gaming history, the finest of the 21st century. Despite its overwhelming difficulty, it has an addictiveness that makes you want to challenge tough enemies again and again, and the sense of accomplishment the moment you win is an appeal you can rarely taste in other games. On top of an enormous amount of content, it also features highly free character building through diverse builds, boasting a level of polish that lets you keep playing for hundreds of hours. The DLC adds new weapons, areas, and bosses, letting you enjoy a new adventure with a volume rivaling the main game. The breadth of exploration and build-building expands even further, and it has the appeal of keeping you playing long after clearing it.

The only game that I've ever played that I'd call a "true open-world". It always amazed me how after the tutorial, you're free to do whatever... enter Caelid underleved, fight the Tree Sentinel with beginner equipment, or just simply explore. Despite the difficulty, none of the fights ever felt unfair (except for Consort Radahn...), and every inch of exploration felt marvel. Also, unironically, this game made me feel fear no other games have done before. The fear of the unknown, fear of death, it was crazy feeling all sorts of emotions when I was playing this game.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is an RPG game that blends turn-based combat with action RPG elements, providing a fresh take on the genre. The game is set in a world with the Paintress looming over it. Every year, the Paintress paints a number, after which everyone whose age is above that number disappears. Players follow Expedition 33, the latest group of people who set out to fight the Paintress, and stop her from painting once and for all.

A perfect marriage of nearly every creative field you can think of. The music? moving and grandiose. The art direction? Like concept art came to life straight from the page. The acting and voices laced to the brim with nuance and emotion. The gameplay an evolution of turn based and action, the Pictos and Lumina system a sandbox for experimentation, the characters all harboring a depth I've never seen before in a video game. Expedition 33 is a monolithic achievement in terms of interactive media. It is a moving painting crafted with a philosopher's insight and an artisan's masterful hand. It is a story that forces you to think about your own mortality, and those of your loved ones, it shows how differently people grieve, and how none are wrong but also none are right, and if you attempt to come to your own conclusion, even your very own family might suffer for it. Death comes for us all, but what can we do but cope? All the elements are there and they work together to create one of the finest works of art that I've had to use a controller to interact with.

Ronald / 20s / Male

One of my best games of all time. The game is really addictive and it was able to seemingly combine turn-based and action into one challenging but fun experience. Everything is top-notch from top to bottom. The story really hooked me until the end. It was confusing at first but really good when everything was put into place. The music really sets the mood of the battle or moment, and you are drawn into it.

- A Japanese-style game made by the overseas game studio "Sucker Punch" - A wonderful game where you feel respect for Japan everywhere, having properly researched Tsushima - The sword-fighting action is genuinely fun too - The action of quietly taking out enemies by stealth is also excellent - The graphics are extremely beautiful, and just riding a horse across Tsushima to explore is fun on its own - There's a lot to grind, with plenty of collection and upgrade elements like athletic-style minigames, searching for hot springs, and finding training grounds - The characters have lots of personality and memorable lines. One of the best games I have ever played on the PS4. The graphics were so realistic that I truly felt like I was strolling through Tsushima. I really liked how the game hides the HUD whenever you explore the map, it encourages you to focus on the scenery and surroundings, which I can honestly say were breathtaking.

Cyberpunk 2077 is a first-person RPG based on the tabletop game, Cyberpunk. Players assume the role of V in the neon-sprawling Night City, taking on missions and gigs that can lead to different outcomes depending on the player's choices. A massive selection of weapons, cyberware, and abilities allows players to create countless builds for V, giving every playthrough a fresh experience.

I know Cyberpunk 2077 had a really rocky launch, and it actually took me three years to finally play it after the Phantom Liberty DLC came out. And honestly, Phantom Liberty really made V feel like he was in an actual spy movie. But underneath all the bugs and crashes, there was a genuinely good game. The characters felt alive, and romances like Panam’s really made it feel like I was connecting with someone. I’ve always been a fan of the cyberpunk genre, from Blade Runner to Ghost in the Shell and Altered Carbon. This game really made me feel like I was a merc trying to survive in an unforgiving city of sin, chrome, and bullets.

Ronald / 20s / Male

I really enjoyed the story of this game, it really hooked me with the struggles of V and how he/she will do anything to survive. The choices you make throughout the game can really shape your relationship with your friends and how the game would end. The skills you can give your character in game really make every single playthrough different. You can create havoc for your enemies if you want or just chill and drive alongside others on the road.

Directed by Tetsuya Nomura of Kingdom Hearts fame, Final Fantasy VII Remake introduces one of the most seminal works in RPG history through a modern lens. As the first section of Remake trilogy, this game fleshes out a short early section of its original counterpart, developing and breathing life into the start of Cloud Strife's journey alongside his party. Instead of a 1:1 copy, however, Nomura puts his signature touch and introduces concepts of time distortions and the multiverse to expand on FF7's deep existing history while subverting classic fans' expectations. FFVII Remake is definitely a great entry point for newcomers who seek to understand why the original is regarded as one of the all-time greats.

Much like Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Reload, Persona 5 Royal is the updated and definitive version of the base game. It fully utilizes the school year, giving you more time to explore its new features, such as the additional storyline that takes place after the main story and the new Confidants introduced in this version. The Palaces have also been expanded. While they still retain most of their original layouts, the addition of Will Seeds not only makes dungeon exploration more fulfilling but also gives you a greater sense of completion as you collect them.

Since I was hyping it up so much, the bar was high, but it was satisfying enough that I played without sleeping for a week after release. Unlike their previousu games, this expands the lore with the Norse mythology setting and provides a third-person POV to keep players deeply immersed in the world of God of War. Kratos begins his newfound journey with the death of his wife, Faye, and aims to fulfill her request, together with his son Atreus, to spread her ashes at the highest peak of the nine realms

I loved the God of War trilogy in the Greek Mythology and it showed me Kratos in his best and worst days while going rip and tear over his enemies shown in the action-packed gameplay. The new God of War in the Norse Mythology is significantly differently and it takes on a more adventure route while focusing more on the story that makes me appreciate him as a character also shown through gameplay. Ludonarrative is very important to me when it comes to games and everything about God of War (2018) is that taken to a higher level.

I hate hate hate open world games. Most of them feel like they don't respect your time. Collect 100 of these pointless things. Travel from point a to point b to point c 20 times. You know how long it takes to go from point a to point b? Here's an npc to escort and you have to match their very slow pace. The abilities you have gained? Here's a section where you can't use any of them for an hour. Here's a map with 5000 pins of pointless things to do. Some of them can give you a costume that does nothing or 2 exp out of the 5000 you need to level up. Witcher 3 famously starts with a side quest where you need to retrieve someone's pan. People found it endearing. I found it offensive. I hate open world games so much. But Insomniac's Spider-Man will always get credit from me for creating a traversal mechanic in an open world game that is so much fun, you forget that there's a fast travel mechanic.

As the cast explores the rest of the planet in their quest to defeat Sephiroth, the game's scale has considerably increased. Demon's Souls (2020) by Bluepoint is a complete remake of FromSoftware's original action RPG, released back in 2009. Demon's Souls was where the Souls genre was born. Introducing an unforgiving dark fantasy world, subtle lore exposition and worldbuilding, tight combat controls requiring patience and practice, a host of interesting and wildly difficult bosses, and a punishing death system that made each encounter and victory that more fulfilling.

The game's controls haven't changed at all from the old "Demon's Souls." Melee combat is quite disadvantageous, and if you play centered on ranged attacks, you can basically get through to the end. This point is also greatly different from the later "DARK SOULS" series, which is very interesting. The reason I want to recommend this game is that I felt it's one of the works that lets you experience the PS5's performance most clearly. Above all, the visual expression is completely next-gen quality, and the delicate lighting and the meticulous craftsmanship of the backgrounds and stages are overwhelming. It's a work I'd want everyone to experience at least once.

Noel / 30s / Male

Where the Souls series began, your first Souls game will always be the hardest since it's the one that teaches you how to get good and how to have the right mindset, how to be patient, how not to spam, how to play with intention and discipline. Sam Porter Bridges does Australia in Kojima Productions' cinematically-infused sequel to Death Stranding, and the results are as magnetic as the original. Flipping the first game's theme of connecting communities on its head, Death Stranding 2 reckons with the sense of loss and grief that can triggered by severing a connection that was made, as Sam is charged with reconnecting the Australian continent and linking it up to America. The series' signature hybrid of traversal and infrastructure-building returns, with new twists in the form of a base ship, the D.H.V. Magellan, and an increased emphasis on laying the groundwork for vehicular travel by reestablishing a cross-country highway network and high-speed monorail. Additional focus on combat also heightens the sense of tension and threat, as the factions that push back against Sam and his allies' attempts to reconnect the world are more well-equipped than ever.

Combines excellent graphics and top-class production with innovative, infrastructure-building gameplay undergirded by an actual cultural sensibility that breaks past the insular sphere of nerd media that informs so many other triple-A games.

Great sequel to an amazing sci-fi story and world. I got emotionally invested in this game as well.

The Last of Us Part 2 is a sequel, both narratively and mechanically, to The Last of Us. It keeps the same third-person action formula but adds small improvements that are greater than the sum of their parts. Environments are bigger and more interactive, enemies are smarter and more reactive, and more gameplay styles are allowed. And the combination of all these changes increases the ways combat encounters can be dealt with. As with the first game, The Last of Us Part 2 is still primarily a character-focused narrative game. While the first game asked us how far we're willing to go for the ones we love, the second game builds on this and asks how far is too far.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined takes place on the island of Estard, which is the only island in the entire world…or so everyone thinks. The desire for adventure and making a difference in the world leads you, our unnamed protagonist and a lowly fisherman’s son, Maribel, the sharp-mouthed daughter of Pilchard Bay’s mayor, and Kiefer, the crown prince of Estard, on a magical quest to restore the world to its former glory. Travel to the past, free the plights of the lost regions, restore their place on the map, and free the world from the clutches of the Demon King, Orgodemir, in this modern take on a timeless classic! Both newcomers and longtime fans of the franchise who have played the original Dragon Quest VII (originally called Dragon Warrior VII) will be able to enjoy high-definition graphics and smooth animation while experiencing a familiar yet refined storyline, familiar yet refined turn-based gameplay, and equally familiar faces that are sure to tug at your heartstrings!

You can set enemy strength and experience points yourself, your next destination is shown, and tedious fetch quests were removed, so overall it became quite a lot easier to play, which was great. It adopted a job dual-wielding system, a first (I think?) for Dragon Quest, and it was fun thinking about party formations and job combinations. The monster and town graphics also became quite beautiful, which impressed me.

For better or worse it plays smoothly, so even an old guy like me could casually go all the way to the Platinum trophy. Good story. The point that changing the difficulty carries no particular in-game penalty was a puzzling bit, but I got more satisfaction out of it than I expected.

良くも悪くもサクサクプレイできておじさんにも軽い気持ちでトロコンまでいけた。 ストーリー良し。 難易度変更にゲーム内でのペナルティが特にないところが、解せぬポイントではあったけど、予想以上の満足感はあった。

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 takes on the best parts of its predecessors and expands them into a more polished Spider-Man game that lets you instantly switch from Peter Parker into Miles Morales, with wing-suit gliders that lets you explore a more massive New York with ease. The duo protagonists, each with their distinct strengths, face new villains like Kraven the Hunter and Venom, and revisits old antagonists from the beloved series. The darker story explores themes of power and humanity as Peter explores the power of the symbiote. It's a sequel that old and new fans of the series will enjoy.

This was the game I bought my PS5 with. Definitely made my purchase worth it. Also got me into Trophy-hunting, given how easy it was to get the Plat for this game.

Palworld is a creature-collector game where you can have "pals" assist you in everyday life such as hunting, crafting, and traveling.

Palworld is the best game out there. Just strengthening your Pals alone opens up so much depth—leveling them up, passive skills, IVs, and awakening. It's also impressive how solid the development is: you can roam freely across the huge open world without running into any major bugs. There are all kinds of crafting elements too, and you can lose a whole day just running back and forth between your bases gathering materials. Next, I think I'll give multiplayer a try.

VoidSpyder

Great game to play as a single player or mutiplyer game with friends, also has a good storyline so far with it still being developed by the game studio, overall is an awesome game!

Digimon Time stranger is a big step in a new direction with the Digimon series. You explore both sides of reality instead of one. They explain or hit on so much of the deep lore in Digimon that quite a few fans don’t know about. I think it’s a great game and the right direction for Digimon. Who knows maybe the next will be like it only fully open in two dimensions instead of one like past games.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is the modern reimagining of the 2002 horror classic. The twins spiral into an eerie adventure in a bid to escape, but unknowingly revive the lingering horrors of the past and long-buried secrets. Ratchet and Clank: Rift ApartRatchet and Clank: Rift ApartHidden Gem

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart

4.8/5

Hop between worlds in Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart! This third person shooter-platformer follows the same flashy guns-blazing gameplay the veterans of the series know and well, but boasts its abiliy to display the developers technical prowess of real-time realm warping without any loading screens in the PS5. As before, the player can use a variety of weapons and gadgetry to choose from and adapt to the situation. With the added mechanic of instantaneous hopping between dimensions, the intense sci-fi combat make it all the more exciting to play. We follow the continuation of the Ratchet and Clank story, but new to the series is the introduction of another playable character named Rivet, who is a Lombax like our main character from another dimension. Fans of the game can also feel a sense of nostalgia as the game revisits familiar areas with an interdimensional twist.

Outer WildsOuter WildsHidden Gem

Outer Wilds

4.5/5

Outer Wilds can be hard to describe for the spoiler-averse considering how wonderful it can feel to solve its mysteries on your own, but suffice it to say that the game helpfully embodies the unalloyed joy of exploration and finding things out with minimal assistance. Trapped in a solar system beset by a world-destroying supernova that's stuck on a 20-minute time loop. Each time resetting to the beginning of the adventure, you need to solve the mystery of why the loops are happening by jetting off to the different planets in the tiny, clockwork universe, each time armed only with the knowledge you gained from the last loop. Outer Wilds ends up an incredible adventure that replicates the thrill of discovering the truth for yourself.
