This is a guide to the Velkhana Boss Fight in Monster Hunter Stories 3 (MHS3). Learn how to beat Velkhana, its weaknesses, behaviour and attack pattern, the Velkhana's location and the best strategy to beat the boss.

Velkhana has 4 states which are its Normal, Ice Mantle, Freezing Fog, and Exposed States.
Normal State

Hyperfreeze |
Velkhana will start off in the Normal State, in which it will unleash a Technical Attack and powerful Ice element skills like Icicle Raid (AoE) and Hyperfreeze (Single Target). After the third turn, it will shift to its Ice Mantle State.
It will revert back to its Normal State after unleashing Absolute Zero in its Freezing Fog Mantle State.

Velkhana in its Ice Mantle State will engage in head to heads with Speed Attacks. It will also use Icicle Storm, a very powerful AoE Ice type attack.
Note that if Velkhana has the Exposed Status it will convert its Hyperfreeze skill into a Speed Attack as well during this state.

During its Freezing Fog Mantle State, Velkhana will now unleash Power Attacks alongside its powerful Ice type skills. At the end of this state, it will unleash Absolute Zero, an extremely powerful Ice element AoE move.
Exposed State

Technical Attack |
Velkhana will only enter the Exposed state once it is toppled or staggered. It will do so in between states and it will only take one turn to unleash a Technical Attack.
Note as well that the timing of the Exposed State and the Exposed Status may still differ so watch the screen for Rudy's alerts on when it is exposed.

Velkhana will be weak to Fire and Dragon element skills throughout all of its states so we recommend Espinas, Malzeno, and Deviljho for their elemental advantage and their high stats. Players can also opt to use the Dreadqueen Rathian to apply Noxious Poison or burn onto the enemy.
Note however, that the Malzeno and Dreadqueen Rathian are weak to Ice Element Skills so save them to unleash attacks during head to heads and switch them out accordingly.

How to Beat the Velkhana

Level Up to at Least Level 72
Velkhana will be at level 75, so it is recommended to level up your roster to be at least Level 72.
Equip Ice Resistant Armor and Genes
Because Velkhana will unleash mostly Ice Elemental Skills make sure to equip your protagonist and Monsties with Ice Resistant Armor and Genes respectively. They will be more likely to retain their hearts during the battle.
Equip Fire or Dragon Element Weapons
Players should equip Fire or Dragon element weapons to deal more substantial damage to Velkhana.

Focus on Toppling and Staggering the Boss
Players should focus on Toppling or Staggering the boss multiple times throughout the battle because it will force it into the Exposed State. During this state, the boss will only attack with a Technical Attack leaving an opening for the roster to both attack and avoid large damage from Velkhana's Ice skills.
It is recommended to use the skill Pickaxe Beak for this as it inflicts Wyvernsoul Def Down.
Watch the Screen to Know When It is Exposed
Rudy will mention from time to time when the boss is Exposed so take advantage of this time to deal damage to Velkhana. Conversely, Rudy will also mention when the Exposed Status is gone. When it has the Exposed Status, it will be easier for players to trigger head to heads.
Rudy's dialogue will be shown near the bottom of the screen, where you find the health bars of your characters.
Change Attack Types During Head to Heads in Different States
Velkhana will use a lot of turns for head to heads, so make sure to use the correct attack type to counter it. Note as well that Velkhana can unleash all three attack types depending on its state so make sure to double check which state it is in then select your characters' attack type accordingly.
Combat System Guide: How to Win Battles
Inflict Darkness, Burn and Poison
Velkhana will be susceptible to Burn, Poison and Darkness during all three of its states. Take advantage of this by using Monstie skills with these effects. Darkness in particular, will help your roster avoid receiving damage from its high power Ice skills from time to time.
Invite Kora as an Ally
Kora makes a great ally during this battle she extends the duration of debuffs. This will be helpful when players apply debuffs to Velkhana's Accuracy, Defense, and Wyverysoul Defense.
In addition to this her partner Monstie, Gravy can deal excellent damage with its Fire skills and Kinship skill.
Save Kinship Skill to Delay Absolute Zero
Absolute Zero is Velkhana's high power Ice Type Skill which is unleashed at the end of the boss' Freezing Fog Mantle State. Save and time your Kinship Skill to delay this attack as it will save you and your party from losing a lot of hearts.
However, Velkhana will continue the attack if you are not able to stagger it out of this transformation. It is recommended either to push for the damage if you can or restore your Hearts to avoid a loss!
How to Use Kinship Skills
Use the Egg Skill Solar Cry
In addition to the previous tip of saving your Kinship skill to interrupt the strong attack, players can also use the Egg Skill Solar Cry to fill up their Kinship Gauge faster. The more your Kinship gauge is filled, the more you will be able to skip Velkhana's attacks with Kinship Skills.
Velkhana Rewards
Rimeguard Armor After Repelling or Losing the Fight
After repelling, losing or winning the fight against Namielle, players can acquire materials from Velkhana that you can use to craft its armor, Rimeguard Armor.
Velkhana Eggs in Glacial Caps, Serathis
Velkhana's Egg will also appear in dens around Glacial Caps, Serathis after defeating it. With this, players can have their own Velkhana Monstie in their party.
New or Enhanced Ally and Equipment Skills

| Heroic Testament and Follower Testament |
Increases maximum HP and damage dealt to enemies and reduces damage taken. |
If you managed to defeat Velkhana from full health to zero in a single fight without repelling it, then you will receive a decoration called Heroic Testament while all your battle allies will receive a passive skill called, Follower Testament even if you only repelled the boss.
If you already have one in your possession, it will upgrade the ones you have one level higher (S → M → L → XL) with each level increasing the effect of the skill.

Improved Serathis Habitat Stat Increases
After defeating Velkhana, every egg obtained and hatched in Serathis will have a bonus increase in their Stamina Recovery stat.
How to Spawn Velkhana
Defeat Enemies at Night; Will Be Located at Glacial Caps
Players can spawn Velkhana by defeating enemies at night. You can access night time after completing the main story, Endangered Species.
This can possibly initiate a cutscene of Velkhana spawning. After which, Velkhana will be located at Glacial Caps in Serathis, near the south part of the map.
