|

Boltreaver Astalos
|

Purple Gypceros
|
How to Get: Immediately obtainable in Broadleaf Basin ✓ Has access to Stuns and Composure ✓ High Wyvernfell and Defense stats ✕ Extremely Weak to Fire |
The best team you can have in Azuria are Dreadqueen Rathian, Boltreaver Astalos and Purple Gypceros. All, except Purple Gypceros, can be obtained as soon as you are done with the Endangered Species main story quest but you still need to work on their respective Invasive monsters and Habitat Restoration to get their mutations especially with Boltreaver Astalos.
The first two monsties also has access to an egg skill called Solar Cry, which raises the kinship gauge by 30. This is especially useful against hard bosses so you can deal massive damage, interrupt their attacks or heavily reduce their Wyvernfell gauge.
Early on in the game, it is extremely important to play around the Head-to-Head mechanic to reduce or completely negate damage. However, access to genes is scarce at this point of the game, so you need to always have a monster for each attack type you can swap around in battle.

If you do not have access to the monsters previously suggested or want more monstie on your team for you to use, you can get Tobi-Kadachi, Nerscylla, Royal Ludroth or Rathian.
The first three of these monsties have access to an egg skill called Heat Shimmering, which can buff the dodge chance of the party that can stack up to three times and helps increase the chance of avoiding damage completely. They also specialize in inflicting status ailments such as Paralysis and Sleep.
Rathian is the weaker version of the Dreadqueen Rathian and the only difference between them is their skills and stamina. If you prefer having access to AoE fire attacks then you can choose Rathian instead.

The Monsties mentioned above will take a little more time to obtain, but are more than capable for carrying you through the second area. Deviljho and Deadeye Yian Garuga are both capable of applying Wyvernsoul Defense Down to enemy monsters, which allows you to knock down enemies quicker.
In terms of attack, you have more options through Severe Poison, Dragon damage, and Ice damage depending on what your enemy is weak against. When fighting monsters in the overworld, it is important to have a variety of options to cater to many different scenarios.

Stygian Zinogre
|
How to Get: Reach Rank A Habitat Restoration With Lagiacrus ✓ Applies AoE Wyvernsoul Defense Down ✓ Well-rounded Stats ✕ Weak Resistances |
The Monsties above are strong on their own regardless of your current team composition. Espinas, Brute Tigrex, Ivory Lagiacrus, and Stygian Zinogre are all capable of applying their own debuffs that can stall enemies and allow you to attack more. Espinas in particular is one of the best monsties in the game, and can even allow you to whittle down monsters with Noxious Poison.
The main story bosses in Tarkuan are mainly weak to ice, fire, and thunder. The monsties mentioned above, along with your Aurora Somnacanth from the previous region can comfortably carry you through Tarkuan.

For the final region, you are looking to maximize your attack and defenses as much as possible. A few of the endgame bosses in the main story are weak to Dragon damage, making Deviljho relevant in the endgame. For big damage, Magnamalo can provide massive burst damage through Blastblight. Lunagaron is currently the best ice monstie, and Boltreaver Astalos is still incredibly valuable due to Solar Cry, which can fill up your Kinship Skill Gauge.
There are plenty of bosses in the endgame main story missions that are weak to Dragon damage, so make sure to level up at least one Dragon-type monstie. Fire damage is also useful against bosses such as Goss Harag and Aenshin.
