Held Item Tier List: Best Items to Equip
| Item | Explanation |
|---|---|
Eject Button
|
Eject Button gives Yveltal a repositioning tool for offensive and defensive situations. |
X Speed
|
X Speed improves Yveltal mobility via increased movement speed and immunity to slows. |
Yveltal has low mobility and durability, making it an easy target for mobile and high-damage Pokemon, however, its moves have long cast range. It's best to stay at the backlines during fights and avoid getting out of position, so you can safely dish out damage from a distance.
Yveltal's strength comes mostly from Dark Aura's effects. When you hit opponents with a boosted attack or a move, you apply a stacking destruction counter to them. The higher the counter the more damage that opponent recieves.
Once the counter reached its max and the opponent takes damage from your boosted attack or moves, they are knocked out instantly if their HP falls below a certain percentage, and your HP is restored. If the HP restored exceeds your max HP, a set percentage is converted to a shield instead.
With these effects in mind, your gameplay should center around applying and maxing out the damage counter on opponents using boosted attacks and/or moves then getting their HP below the instant knockout threshold to take them out. Remember that Oblivion Wing only applies one (1) destruction counter while Dark Pulse and Lumiere of Demise applies a counter for each pulse.
Dark Aura: Yveltal Passive Effect and Cooldown
Lumiere of Demise deals a ton of damage on its own, but you can amplify its damage further when you max out the destruction counter on opponents first before using the move. Doing so maximizes the move's damage output and allows you to easily trigger the instant knockout effect of Dark Aura on multiple targets, which is highly effective in teamfights.
Lumiere of Demise: Yveltal Move Effect and Cooldown
| Destruction Beam Combo | |
|---|---|
| Start the combo with Dark Pulse to stun and slow opponents then immediate follow up with Oblivion Wing to max out the destruction counter. Afterwards, use Lumiere of Demise to (hopefully) trigger the instant knockout effect of Dark Aura. | |

| Pokemon | Explanation |
|---|---|
Darkrai
|
Rating: ★★★★★ • Has high burst damage and can put Skeledirge to sleep using Dark Void and Nasty Plot. • Can isolate and quickly knock out Skeledirge in Worst Nightmare. |
Gengar
|
Rating: ★★★★★ • Can safely get close with Phantom Ambush and burst it down with Dream Eater and Shadow Ball or Sludge Bomb and Hex. |
Ceruledge
|
Rating: ★★★★★ • Can get into melee range with Flame Charge and/or Revenant Rend and slow it with Pyscho Cut then quickly knock it out with attacks. |
Since Yveltal lacks mobility and is easy to burst down, Pokemon with high mobility and burst damage can quickly knock out Yveltal out of the fight.
Applying and maxing out the destruction counter using boosted attacks and/or moves will allow Yveltal get the upper hand against these Pokemon.
| Ranged, Fragile Pokemon with High Damage |
|---|
Much like Yveltal, these Pokemon prefer to keep their distance from opponents when fighting. They also have high damage potential that can be dangerous for Yveltal.
Use Dark Pulse to stun and slow them then follow up with Oblivion Wing to apply and max out the destruction counter on them. Afterwards, use Lumiere of Demise to knock them out.
| Brawlers/Combo-heavy Pokemon |
|---|
These Pokemon excel in close combat and rely mostly on their attacks or combos to deal damage. They are also durable enough to tank Yveltal's damage.
Stay at the backlines and use your moves to safely deal damage.
| Highly Durable Pokemon |
|---|
These Pokemon are extremely durable, making it hard for the Pokemon to take them out alone. With that, it's best to group up with allies to bring them down with the help of Yveltal.
Use Dark Pulse to stun and slow them then follow up with Oblivion Wing to apply and max out the destruction counter on them.
| Non Threats |
|---|
These Pokemon can fall quickly to Yveltal's damage and have little no ways to counter it. Once Yveltal get into range and unleashes its moves, they'll most likely get knocked out quickly.
