[INTERVIEW] Danganronpa 2x2 Devs Call Slayhem Mode an “Experiment” to Give Fans Something New

Image

Danganronpa 2x2 producer Shohei Sakakibara discussed the creation of Slayhem Mode during a TGS 2026 Q&A. Here’s what the developers said about reworking Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair for longtime fans.

Why the Team Chose Danganronpa 2 For Its New "Experiment"

Danganronpa 2x2 was conceived as an "experiment" to give longtime fans something new after the mainline series reached its conclusion with Danganronpa V3, according to producer Shohei Sakakibara. At a Tokyo Game Show 2026 Q&A, Sakakibara discussed how the team arrived at the idea for Slayhem Mode, a new scenario that reimagines the events of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair with different outcomes. The mode retains the original setting and cast and introduces different victims, culprits, and tricks. Spike Chunsoft has said that Slayhem Mode offers approximately 20% more content than Original Mode.

Sakakibara explained that the project began with a desire to return to Danganronpa after years without a new mainline entry. In translated remarks, he said he "just didn’t want to leave the Danganronpa franchise untouched," which led to discussions with Kazutaka Kodaka of Too Kyo Games about revisiting one of the existing games.

The team initially considered remaking Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc. According to Sakakibara, adding a new scenario made more sense with Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, which led to the concept that became Danganronpa 2x2. The game contains both the original Danganronpa 2 story and the new Slayhem story, with both available from the beginning. The prospect of seeing familiar characters face different outcomes was already on fans' minds during the Q&A, with one audience member joking that they hope a certain character "won’t die" this time, which drew laughter from the room.

During a brief hands-on session, Monokuma gave each student a special "Slayhem Item" and told them the items could be used to kill one another. The portion available during the session also suggested that the culprit in Slayhem Mode might be different from the one in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair.

Director Takahiro Suzuki said one motivation was to allow players who experienced Danganronpa 2 on older platforms to enjoy the game again, with Slayhem providing "the new story" for returning fans.

Sakakibara later characterized the project as "a challenge" and "an experiment." The team was aware that changing a familiar Danganronpa 2 story could produce mixed reactions from longtime fans. Sakakibara said they expected some players to be excited and "some worried voices too," particularly from people who are passionate about the game.

Danganronpa 2x2 Devs Say Slayhem Mode Is Best Experienced After the Original

Sakakibara said the new character was created with those expected reactions in mind. Sakutaro Higashi, who is voiced by Griffin Burns (Tartaglia from Genshin Impact; Muichiro Tokito from Kimetsu no Yaiba), first appeared in the September Nintendo Direct with his identity left unknown. Fans, then, nicknamed him "John Danganronpa" as a result. Spike Chunsoft later revealed his name and confirmed that he is a new student who becomes involved in Slayhem Mode's Class Trials. His Ultimate Talent remains undisclosed.

The nickname came up during the Q&A, where AUTOMATON WEST asked Sakakibara about the response to the character’s reveal. He said the team had expected a strong reaction and had hoped the Nintendo Direct appearance would be a major surprise for fans.

The team also addressed how players should approach Slayhem Mode. The scenario was designed to remain playable without prior knowledge of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, though the developers recommend experiencing the original scenario first. Sakakibara explained players might enjoy the new scenario more if they can play while thinking about how the original story went, and what makes this new version the “Slayhem Mode” (In Japanese, known as Kyōki Mode, translated as “Madness Mode”). As Slayhem Mode is tuned toward players who have already played the original scenario and are familiar with Danganronpa’s investigation and trial mechanics, it does not include difficulty settings.

Plenty has already been revealed about Danganronpa 2x2, but questions remain about what this approach could mean for future entries in the series. Those answers will have to wait until Danganronpa 2x2 releases on January 14, 2027, for PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S.
