Game8's Review Policy and Scoring System

Everything We Know About AION 2

AION 2 Plot

Image

Following the events of the original AION, the barrier surrounding the world of Atreia collapsed. This gave the Balaur, a draconic race consumed by their power, the opportunity to conquer it with little to no effort. Their conquest divided humanity into two factions: the Elyos and Asmodians.

This is where you, the player, come in. You take on the role of a mercenary turned Daeva, a race of winged demigods that were hunted down eons ago. They are now humans who go through ascension. Upon ascension, you receive visions of a deity called Azhar. This higher being then informs you that magical shards from the Tower of Eternity birthed new beings, including you. You are then given the shared goal of becoming an Arch-Daeva to impose Aion’s will, the overarching god of the series, and succeed him.

AION 2 Gameplay

Image

AION 2's gameplay refines the already set formula of the classic MMORPG with some Korean flair. The game follows a core loop to reel in players. First, they choose their preferred class and progress through the story while understanding its mechanics. After getting a hold of the basics, they delve into dungeons to obtain gear. Players are then incentivized to join a guild while min-maxing their characters. This eventually leads to completing the endgame or participating in PvP.

While there is plenty to do in an open-world setting with some exciting events, the gameplay itself revolves around the loop. On top of that, its take on the skill system lets you set up rotations unique to you, so there is a lot of build variety you can sink your teeth into!

AION 2 Release Date

Image

AION 2, after its scale test from September 17-18, will receive its global release on October 5, 2026. It will be made available mainly on two platforms: Steam and PURPLE on PC.

AION 2 First Impressions

Back to the Classics

Image

The MMORPG formula, for those who are unaware, has already been tried and tested by the all-time greats. From the original World of Warcraft to the much more recent Throne and Liberty, some have put their own spin on the gameplay, like Fallout 76's FPS system and its different take on the classic V.A.T.S., but the core hooks still hold precedence: progression, social interaction, and competition.

The original title, AION, took these three themes to heart and introduced its own world with slight adjustments such as skill stacking and limited flight. With its sequel, AION 2, this system is made even better by integrating combat with flight alongside an overall better engine for performance, which feels really fun and fluid while playing! Sticking close to this tried-and-true formula makes it strong and satisfying for new players, while those already familiar with the genre will find it easy to jump right in.

Aesthetically Sound

Image

It would be a crime to ignore AION 2's beautiful and vibrant graphics! Every nook and cranny in the world of Atreia is filled with visual detail of its unique ecology. This becomes especially apparent after picking a faction, as each starting area has a different vibe.

Image

Apart from the aesthetics, the characters look much prettier than other MMORPGs, both in graphics and overall features. MMORPG players oftentimes play to insert themselves into their characters, and AION 2's character customization does this well with diverse options to make an avatar truly your own. We are all aware by now that most Korean games prioritize visuals, and AION 2 is no exception.

Familiar Classes, Distinctive Systems

Image

Of course, it will not be a classic MMORPG without a proper class system. This has already been played out and improved over the years, and AION 2 sticks to the staple classes that genre fans will recognize. For example, the classic Warrior role is filled by the Gladiator, who wields a Greatsword. Rather than subclasses, build variety comes from itemization and the game's other systems.

On that note, they did introduce some distinctive systems that are fun to work around. The main one is the Daevonian Board, which is like a passive tree reminiscent of Path of Exile's, albeit not with the same high-level complexity as the aforementioned game. This lets you spec into certain stats, increase the level of skills, and unlock modifiers for them. Said modifiers will be the main point to focus on, as they can entirely change the properties of a skill.

Combat is Fluid

Image

The shining point is the combat itself. Movement doesn't feel clunky compared to other MMORPGs, especially when introducing the flight mechanic. Boss fights are actually fun with a back-and-forth fight, unlike the usual DPS test-dummy format. The combat rewards perfect dodging and proper positioning. This is particularly true for playing alone. When playing with other players, group boss fights add another layer of challenge, as you'll need to coordinate with teammates through their more complex attacks.

The game also has a skill stack ability, where you can stack multiple skills on one input to quicken combos, allowing for both new and veteran players to streamline skill usage whilst testing different combinations.

A Helping Hand

Image

As for gameplay, I can safely say AION 2 holds your hand with the basics. It guides you while giving you the agency to figure things out yourself, especially if this is your first MMORPG. As you level up, more systems keep pouring in, so there is always something new to learn as you progress.

For example, the game guides you the most through its quests, which make up most of the game, taking you to the next area to either defeat enemies or grab some items. The game also has auto-travel, meaning you can press Alt+1 and let the game take you to your next objective. That said, it's worth slowing down every now and then, since all of the NPC interactions present in the quests are fully voiced.

A Story Rooted in AION's Lore

Image

Now that I have touched on quests, understanding its story will come easiest to those who know AION’s prior lore. While MMORPGs were never really known for their lore, successful ones had a narratively healthy world, like WoW and Guild Wars 2, and AION 2 does have an interesting story which builds heavily upon the lore from the original game, as you can read from the summary at the top of this article.

As for the open world, most locations do tell the story of local events, but you won’t really be able to understand the main plot just from environmental clues, apart from the lands being ravaged by the draconic race. It’s common for players to skip scenes to progress as fast as possible given the competitive nature of MMORPGs, but players who want to really understand the world of AION 2 should try to take in the story at their own pace.

A Promising Future on a Classic Foundation

Image

When all is said and done, AION 2 has already launched in Korea and Taiwan, and the global release looks to build on that. The development team is continuously looking into ways to keep excessive spending from translating into an advantage in gameplay or competition. Their goal is to give players around the world a fairer environment where they can focus on the fun of the game itself, and they are also putting effort into PvP content to create a competitive environment that everyone can feel good about. These are steps in the right direction as they look to reach more players with the global release, so it's looking hopeful for MMORPG fans who are looking for that classic-turned-modern feel of games!
