GTA 6 Safes Can Be Cracked or Blown Open

Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6)’s robberies let players choose how to get the loot, and the choice has a cost. Rob Nelson, Head of Development and Co-Studio Head at Rockstar North, showed this while playing through a 30-minute demo of the game.
Robberies aren't new to the series, since GTA 5 had store holdups and planned heists, but they were largely optional side activities there. But speaking to IGN in an interview, Nelson said GTA 6 puts them at the center. He said players can rob “pretty much anything,”
from shops to banks to payday loan places, and that robberies make up a big part of what players do between story missions. Some parts of the story even require earning cash by boosting cars or holding up places, so money matters much more than in earlier GTA games.

Getting away clean also takes more thought than before. Nelson said a crime is only reported if a witness sees it or an alarm goes off, and on foot, alleys are often the best escape from a three-star chase. Cars are riskier too. Earlier games let players steal almost any vehicle with a single button press, he said, but now an advanced tracker pings police when you drive too slowly, and damage lowers what a car fence will pay.
For example, during a pawn shop job, Nelson found a safe and tracked down its combination. He said he also had an explosive that would have opened it faster but damaged some of the loot. He added that a smart player would park a getaway vehicle out front beforehand, which he skipped to see what would happen. Police soon stacked up outside, and he escaped through the back door.
Your Partner Can Drive the Getaway While You Shoot

Getting away is where the two protagonists work together. Nelson said players can switch between Jason and Lucia at any time, and the uncontrolled character takes over the driving. In a chase, the partner can handle the car while players shoot at pursuers.
According to Nelson, this can look and feel like a scripted mission even when it's happening in free roam. He described shooting out tires so a lead car flips and blocks the cars behind it, or beating a train at the last second. He called that feeling "totally new" for Rockstar.
GTA 6 Missions Now Offer Multiple Routes

The same flexibility reaches the story missions, which the Extended Look hinted at through multiple escape routes. Nelson said Rockstar has made a conscious effort to open things up where it can. The tower block escape shown in the Extended Look has multiple routes out. In the mission where Raul gets in the car, the first part is on rails, with Jason shooting while Lucia drives. Then the player takes the wheel and is told the optimal route out but they can still escape another way if the player wants a bit more freedom.
Not every mission will be that open, though. Nelson said some story moments still need to be directed so the narrative lands as intended, and that too much freedom can make it harder to keep mission quality high. Rockstar's approach is to open missions up wherever it can, especially chases and robberies, which can run on the same systems as free roam.
Even Rockstar Was Surprised by Jason's Heist Suggestion

The open world can also change plans on the fly. Nelson said that during the demo he was heading to a pawn shop when Jason pointed out a police impound lot. A car fence had given the couple the entry code, so they stole an Infernus from the lot instead. Nelson said he hadn't heard that line from Jason before and was pleasantly surprised that the dialogue triggered.
He added that the game is so big that he doesn't think anyone on the team knows all of it, with new dialogue regularly hitting the build even one month before launch. Rockstar also doesn't mark every discovery with an icon, and Nelson said players who explore will be rewarded "a lot."
NPCs Notice Eavesdroppers and May Confront You

Pedestrians are more aware of Jason and Lucia as well. Nelson said that standing too close to a conversation or following someone too closely can make them notice and ask if they can help. At other times, they can turn aggressive or try to get away.
That's a change from earlier games. Nelson said Red Dead Redemption 1 and GTA V only had basic ways to interact with NPCs, and that players in older GTAs were "a bit all-powerful," with everyone but the police running in terror. In GTA 6, pedestrians can fight back. In the demo, a simple exchange escalated when another group pulled a gun, though aiming a weapon back defused it.
Nelson said Rockstar built a new team of writers, directors, and producers in LA to create the dialogue. He also said a new system retargets animations on the fly, so NPCs of different heights and body shapes can interact believably.
Shower Scenes, a Dumpster Lawyer, and Lurk-Only Snapmatic

The demo included some stranger moments. Switching to Jason caught him in the shower. Lucia also found a man in a dumpster who can be given pills, returns later with legal advice, and even lets you climb in with him.
Smaller systems showed up too. Overeating puts on weight, and Snapmatic lets the characters browse and follow accounts but not post, which adds immersion as a couple on the run.
Rockstar Avoids Slang to Keep GTA 6 From Feeling Dated

Nelson also explained how Rockstar approaches satire. Because development cycles are so long, he said, the team avoids jumping on trends and picks angles that will feel timeless. Specific political issues and memes date quickly, and the characters avoid very contemporary slang so they don't feel stuck in time. He said Jason and Lucia have rich backstories, some stated directly and some only hinted at.
Nelson closed by saying that even with the new systems, GTA 6 is still "very much Grand Theft Auto." Rockstar hasn't said how deep these systems go beyond the demo, so the finished game will be the real test of whether the freedom he describes holds up.
