Game8 got hands-on with AION 2 at a special media event showcasing four major features of the game. Although some aspects of the Korean/Taiwanese version we tried may vary from the global release, we're excited to share with you everything we learned about AION 2 from our demo playthrough, from the character creation, to the combat, open world exploration, and minigames.
What is AION 2?
The sequel to 2008's AION, AION 2 is a new MMORPG developed and published by NC. Released in Korea in November 2025, AION 2 is gearing up for a massive global release in September 2026.
AION 2 takes place 200 years after the collapse of the Tower of Aion in the previous game, AION, at which time two factions, the Elyos and the Asmodians, are at war; you can choose either faction, and the story that unfolds will depend on which path you chose.
As an open-world action RPG bringing the AION franchise into a new era of gaming, AION 2 obviously has plenty to do, and we had a chance to try just a piece of it at our demo preview. We primarily explored four major features of the game: the Character Creation, the Exploration and Movement, the Combat System, and last but not least, the Minigames! Each of these features tells us a bit about what AION 2 brings as a new MMORPG arriving in 2026.
Character Creation Beyond the Basics

In any MMORPG, you'll be surrounded by all sorts of characters, and this is part of what makes the world feel really alive; this makes a robust character creator all the more essential for a next-generation game in the genre.
Even in 2026, AION 2 pushes the envelope for character creators with its sheer level of customization.
For the most part, the character types available in AION 2 line up with general expectations of beauty, but the detail in the faces is such that even the presets each feel like a different person. In designing your character, no matter which preset you begin with, you can go to extreme lengths to make your character design totally unique from any other in the world.
Hair and Eye Variety Affords a Personal Touch

Let's just use eyes as an example. I've played games with heterochromia as an option before, but how about changing the exact combination of colors within each eye? Or even the size of the pupils? AION 2 makes you feel like you really have control over every aspect of a character's appearance, and not just the ones that you're expected to use, but some that most players wouldn't even have an idea of how to use and a few creative players will use to make something that looks truly original.
When selecting a hairstyle and adjusting the colors of your character's hair or eyes, each option is a gradient rather than a choice from a set palette; even then, the color selection can be applied to specific parts of the hair or eyes, allowing players to experiment with different shades for different impressions.
Clothing as Customizable as Facial Features

Generally, when you think of customization in equipment, you might expect something like a premade skin, or a individual armor or clothing pieces which you can mix and match. AION 2 allows you to actually add specific embossed patterns onto your gear, and change the coloring of both the embossing and the gear itself.
I'm sure we'll see some amazing designs once AION 2 is available on the global stage; although not confirmed, the Japan operations team told us that it's possible that we'll see a feature for sharing character designs, perhaps even at launch time.
High Freedom of Movement in an Open World

AION 2 doesn't scrimp on the scope; AION had a massive game world when it released in 2008, but open world
is as common a descriptor as any these days. AION 2 has a scope that lives up to modern standards, boasting a map 36 times the size of the original game.
3 Methods of Travel: Flying, Riding, and Swimming

This wouldn't be AION without flying, and although Fast Travel points are available, they don't feel as necessary as in other games when you can fly freely towards any set destination. It's always nice when you're given free rein to fly in any direction, not just glide while gradually falling.
A giant whale can be seen flying overhead; although it required a few of the flight stamina recovery potions, I was able to fly up and climb on. Throne & Liberty, another NC MMORPG, also features a large flying whale that you can reach, but in that game it was a trickier task that required a precise glide from a tower at just the right time of day. Some might argue that dropping this hurdle makes exploration too easy, but it's clear that AION 2 wants to give you freedom, and being able to reach the whale with just the wings on your back is a strong statement of that.
AION 2 also features a huge pool of adorable ground mounts; the developers weren't afraid to go all-out for the designs here, although it does put a bit of strain on the believability of the game world to see people getting carried around by giant house cats and baby birds, it's hard not to be impressed at the sheer variety available.
As the third major method of travel beyond riding and flying, swimming is also included, though I wasn't able to try this extensively during my time with the demo. If you can go just as deep under the ocean as you can go high into the sky, then I'm here for it.
Battles Requiring Precision and Knowledge, and Classes to Meet Each Challenge

As a game filled with Quests, Raids, and an open world teeming with powerful Bosses, combat is a core element of AION 2. A core focus in the development process was in implementing a skill focus in battles; with its non-targeting combat system, AION 2 won't allow players to zombie their way through fights, instead requiring precise aim to ensure that each hit in a combo lands. That said, the traditional targeting system is also available as an option for players who find the non-targeting system difficult.
Classes Work as a Team to Take Down Bosses

We got the chance to experience an “Expedition” Raid Dungeon as a team; it was great to see that the Raid Boss at the end didn't slouch on including difficult mechanics rewarding players for taking the time to learn the fight. The boss we fought used an attack which launched walls of fire at high speed, causing a swift death for unprepared players. It also used a charge attack where players need to unleash a high amount of burst damage to cancel it, or else face instant death.
To handle these threats, each of the game's 8 classes plays a different role on the spectrum of DPS, Tank, and Support, with unique options like the Chanter, which offers a rare mix of strong melee attacks and team buffs, for players who want to play Support but don't want to stay on the back lines of combat. Bringing a team with the right composition of classes will surely be key for surviving the high-level raids.
| Class | Roles |
|---|---|
| Gladiator | Sustained Melee DPS |
| Templar | Tank |
| Assassin | Burst Melee DPS |
| Ranger | Sustained Ranged DPS |
| Chanter | Melee DPS + Support |
| Cleric | Support |
| Sorcerer | Burst Ranged DPS |
| Spiritmaster | Ranged DPS |
Skill System with Depth

The Skill system of AION 2 will be familiar for most MMORPG fans, with a suite of Skills you can dish out in sequence to rack up combos. But AION 2 brings some new features and quality of life improvements to the formula.
One system that stood out was the ability to set multiple skills to a single key on PC; since it's common in MMORPGs to need to use a string multiple skills in a combo, AION 2 gives players the option to line up a combo on one key so that it can be executed cleanly, without the need to play a full octave across the number line on your keyboard just to fire off your burst damage combo.

We also learned that there are powerful Skills called Stigmas of which several can be equipped. Instead of just being simple damage buttons or Ultimate attacks
, these Stigmas are designed to shape your build, so the Stigmas you choose will be a further path beyond just which Class you choose to define what role your character plays on the battlefield.
Minigames Take the Edge Off
For a game with a high focus on combat and open world exploration, AION 2 allows players to take a breather with a variety of minigames. When the idea of working through a massive Quest list or pushing through a high-level Raid feels like too much, it's nice to have an option to take on a quick game with simple rules together with friends or guild members.
These are the minigames I played in the demo, and my experience (and results!) on each of them.
Wraith Evasion

In this game, players must collect orbs called Odyle Drops without being seen by Wraiths; if a Wraith sees you and catches you, you'll turn into a Wraith for 30 seconds or until you catch another player, which will change you back early.
The game plays with the balance of risk and reward; play carefully and stay out of sight, and you might lose out in points, but play too aggressively, and you'll spend time in Wraith jail where your points income suddenly drops to zero.
I got 2nd place in this one, after finding some caches of Odyle Drops with no other players around earning me a lead in the first half; as the game continued, the number of Wraiths continued to increase until every time I turned a corner, I would get caught and ended up was spending more time as a Wraith than a human. I'm interested to see how the strategy for this minigame develops.
Mysterious Track

A racing game where you balance between collecting speed boosts and stamina; push too hard for the speed boosts, and you'll run out of stamina and lose your momentum, so players must move skillfully to grab enough of each collectible and seize victory.
I ended up in last place here; in certain parts, you'll come to a ledge and need to jump and start gliding, and I kept missing the timing to grab the collectibles on the glide path. I'll get my revenge in the full game for this one.
Not This Tile?

A memory game where players stand on a tiled board, on which specific safe
tiles are momentarily revealed; players then need to collect as many Festival Balloons as possible, then reach a safe tile when time runs out.
I snagged 1st place in this game. My strategy was to watch a certain tile and memorize the number of spaces it was from the corner. I did miss it once, since I failed to get back in time, so you can't get too greedy!
AION 2 Coming In September 2026

AION 2 is shaping up to be one of, if not the largest MMORPG release of 2026. But what kind of a game is it?
In some ways, AION 2 is a game that does everything; deep combat, a massive world, and even minigames. At the same time, it knows what kind of game it is.
An MMORPG is a game that requires dedication from its players, to login for every world boss, to grind for hours waiting for that one slightly better helmet to drop, to learn the patterns of every Raid boss, and do it all again when the next rarity of equipment comes out.
AION 2 knows that its players will put in the work, so it needs to be big; it needs to have enough different and engaging content for the players to get a full experience out of all those hours, not just farming enemies for drops on the same map every day.
For any MMORPG, no matter how amazing the world is, the players create the game; no players, no game. As a new MMORPG in 2026, AION 2 has a lot to prove. It's bringing plenty to the table – all that's left is to serve it up. We're looking forward to joining the banquet day 1.
AION 2 is coming to PC in September 2026.
