AION 2's Fast-Paced Combat Is Making Its Classes Feel Too Similar

Image

AION 2 offers eight classes with distinct mechanics and roles, but its fast-paced combat can make them feel more alike than they should. We explain in this article why each class need more mechanical identity, in order to shile.

AION 2 Has Eight Classes, But How Different Do They Feel?

Choosing a class in an MMORPG is about more than picking a weapon or deciding whether you want to tank, heal, or deal damage. It's also about finding a playstyle you enjoy enough to invest in for dozens of hours. AION 2 has eight classes with their own mechanics and responsibilities, but its fast-paced combat can make those differences feel less pronounced than they should.

I chose Spiritmaster because I enjoy ranged combat and having summons fight alongside me. Its combat feels smooth, especially when chaining skills to stagger an enemy before following up with a heavier attack. The elemental spirits also give the class a clear identity. However, looking at how AION 2 handles combat more broadly, I think its class design has a challenge. Making each class feel unique is only half the battle if the act of fighting starts to feel similar across the roster.

AION 2 Gives Each Class Its Own Identity

Image

AION 2's classes have recognizable differences in how they approach combat. Spiritmaster uses elemental spirits as part of its damage rotation, while Sorcerer focuses on spellcasting, crowd control, and burst damage. Gladiator combines frontline durability with offense, whereas Templar specializes in defense. Cleric focuses on healing, while Chanter brings party buffs alongside its own offensive capabilities.

They give classes different priorities, and players looking for a specific role have clear options. A Templar has different responsibilities from a Gladiator, just as a Cleric contributes to a party differently from a Chanter.

Image

The issue isn't that AION 2 lacks class variety in theory. It's that having different mechanics doesn't automatically make those differences stand out during combat. A class can have a unique toolkit and still feel repetitive if using that toolkit becomes a matter of executing the same sequence of inputs over and over.

But Fast Combat Can Make Different Classes Feel Similar

Image

Concerns about the game's attack speed and combat macros are prevalent across the community. Since attacks are excessively fast, it makes animations harder to read. Additionally, relying on macros to execute rotations reduces the sense of skill expression. Some players even compare holding a macro to executing a complex combo with a single button.

This points to a problem that goes beyond whether two classes share similar abilities. When attacks happen rapidly and a macro can handle much of a rotation, players may have fewer opportunities to appreciate the decisions behind individual skills. The distinction between managing a Spiritmaster's spirits and chaining a Sorcerer's spells still exists, but the rhythm of combat can make both experiences revolve around executing damage rotations efficiently.

Image

That doesn't mean macros automatically make combat shallow, or that every player will find the system repetitive. They can reduce the strain of repeatedly executing long skill sequences. However, if a class's unique mechanics become less noticeable while players focus on maintaining their rotations, the game risks undermining some of the identity its class kits are designed to provide.

The Problem Isn't Similar Roles, but Similar Experiences

Image

Classes within the same role will naturally share some responsibilities. Two ranged damage dealers need to deal damage from a distance, while frontline classes must survive close encounters. They don't need entirely separate combat systems to justify their existence.

What matters is whether their differences change how players approach a fight. Spiritmaster's summons should offer more than a different visual presentation for its damage, just as the distinction between a defensive Templar and an offensive Gladiator should affect how each approaches an encounter. If those mechanics create different decisions and priorities, the classes have meaningful identities even when they share some combat conventions.

While classes aren’t exactly interchangeable, the way combat is presented can obscure the differences between them. The game has the ingredients for distinct playstyles, but the challenge is making those distinctions consistently apparent while players are actually fighting.

AION 2 Needs to Make Its Class Differences Matter in Practice

Image

I wouldn't say AION 2's eight classes are simply too similar. As party responsibilities still provide meaningful reasons to choose one over another. But class variety shouldn't stop at different weapons, abilities, and role descriptions. Players also need to feel those differences in the decisions they make during combat.

AION 2's fast-paced battles can be satisfying, and its macros offer convenience for players managing lengthy rotations. Yet those mechanics need to complement class identity rather than overshadow it. If players spend most of a fight executing familiar sequences without feeling what makes their chosen class special, the roster's variety risks becoming less compelling than it looks.

Image

AION 2 doesn't need every class to fight in a completely different way. It needs each class's defining mechanics to make a noticeable difference to the way players fight. For example in a tank role, a Templar should encourage players to prioritize protecting themselves and their allies, while a Gladiator should give them more opportunities to balance staying on the frontline with dealing damage. If both ultimately feel like executing fast skill rotations, those differences become harder to appreciate. The bigger challenge AION 2 now have moving forward, is ensuring those class distinctions within similar roles remain meaningful once the battle begins.
