XDefiant Producer Comments on Possible Return
Ubisoft Could Bring Back the Servers "If They Wanted To"
XDefiant may still have a chance of returning in the future, according to former executive producer Mark Rubin. In a May 4, 2026, response to a fan on X (formerly Twitter) asking about the game's future, Rubin said Ubisoft could still bring the shooter back online despite the game shutting down in June 2025.
A fan posted on X asking if there was "ANY hope" for XDefiant to return, to which Rubin replied that he misses the game too, but noted that any possible comeback would ultimately depend on Ubisoft. He mentioned that the company could likely restore the servers "if they wanted to," though he also pointed to Ubisoft's current struggles to "stay afloat."
Early Success Was Short-Lived

XDefiant officially shut down on June 3, 2025, a little over one year after launching for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on May 21, 2024. The free-to-play shooter initially performed strongly, with Rubin later revealing that it became Ubisoft's "fastest game to surpass 5 million users" and eventually reached over 15 million players. Ubisoft also described the game as being "off to an encouraging start" in its Q1 2024-2025 earnings report, adding that it planned to continue growing the game through seasonal content updates.
Despite its early momentum, player interest gradually declined throughout 2024 amid complaints surrounding server instability, hit registration, and a lack of long-term content, leading to growing rumors that the shooter was struggling and could eventually be shut down. In September 2024, Rubin pushed back against those claims, stating that XDefiant was "absolutely not dying" and that Ubisoft had allocated additional resources to improve the game's content and technical issues.

However, Ubisoft eventually confirmed XDefiant's shutdown on December 3, 2024. The company announced that new downloads and player registrations would end immediately, while the game's servers would remain online until June 3, 2025. Ubisoft later released XDefiant's final Season 3 update on December 18, 2024, adding new factions, maps, weapons, and gameplay features before support officially concluded.
When announcing the shutdown, Rubin described XDefiant as a "personal passion" project and praised the development team for what they achieved during the game's short lifespan. He also acknowledged the challenges of maintaining a free-to-play live service shooter while thanking both the developers and community that supported the game throughout its run.
Shortly after XDefiant went offline, Rubin announced on June 5, 2025, via a post on X, "I've decided to leave the industry and spend more time with my family." He added, "I do care passionately about the shooter space and hope that someone else can pick up the flag that I was trying to carry and make games again that care about the players."
Competitive AAA Market and Shooter Landscape

Over the past few years, Ubisoft has struggled with a series of financial and organizational challenges that pushed the company toward a major internal reset. In a January 2026 press release, Ubisoft cited a "persistently more selective AAA market" and an "increasingly competitive shooter landscape," while also pointing to rising development costs and the difficulty of launching successful new franchises. The company said these issues led it to rethink its overall structure and long-term plans.
The restructuring has already resulted in several major changes across Ubisoft's studios and projects. The company confirmed the closure of its Halifax and Stockholm studios, alongside restructuring efforts in other countries. Ubisoft also cancelled six projects, including the highly-anticipated Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake and several other unannounced games. According to Ubisoft, the canceled titles did not meet the company's "new enhanced quality" standards.
Some Players Have Not Given Up

Originally revealed in 2021, XDefiant was often compared to Call of Duty for its fast-paced arcade shooter gameplay and lack of skill-based matchmaking in casual modes. The game launched for PC and consoles on May 21, 2024.
During its 13-month run, Ubisoft released multiple seasonal updates featuring factions inspired by franchises such as Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege, Assassin's Creed, and Far Cry. Despite the game's shutdown, recent fan interactions suggest that some players still hope the shooter could one day return.
