WARDOGS To Hold Final Closed Beta Ahead of September Early Access

WARDOGS Gameplay
WARDOGS developer Bulkhead has announced a final closed beta test, running ahead of the game's Early Access launch. Learn more about the Closed Beta 02 schedule and the developer reasoning behind access requirements.

WARDOGS: Bulkhead Announces Final Closed Beta Ahead of Early Access Launch

Developers Confirm Scale Stress Test Kicking Off September 3rd

WARDOGS developer Bulkhead has announced a second closed beta starting September 3, 2026, ahead of its September 10 early access launch.

Positioned as the final beta test before the game hits Steam Early Access, Bulkhead explicitly framed this event as a genuine scale test where players are encouraged to jump in, "obliterate their servers," break system limits, and stream the chaos.

As seen in the official announcement trailer, the footage delivers a comprehensive look at the high-stakes, 100-player all-out warfare sandbox that pits three rival teams against each other to dominate randomized Control Zones. The video showcases the game's unique combined-arms mechanics, highlighting intensive tactical gunplay, destructible environments where players can tear through structures with heavy artillery, and building systems used to fortify strategic chokepoints. Furthermore, the trailer emphasizes the persistent cash economy and loadout customization, showing players purchasing gear, vehicles, and utility items—such as transport helicopters and tanks—to turn the tide of battle ahead of the weekend test window.

Bulkhead Explains Why the Final Beta is Closed

WARDOGS Chopper

Following player questions regarding why a closed playtest is being held just weeks before the official release, Bulkhead addressed the community on the official WARDOGS' X account. The studio provided a direct analogy to illustrate the necessity of backend stress testing: "Imagine there is a house fire, you’re a firefighter. You turn up, and your sole job is to put the fire out. Then after the fact, when the house has burned down… it’s not until the days after that you figure out what the source of the blaze was."

The studio explained in X that the playtest serves as a controlled fire to isolate and evaluate specific backend systems rather than dealing with an uncontrolled flood where "everything is on fire." Bulkhead noted that while automated testing with fake clients helps, real-world data like lots of players spamming a queue or clicking simultaneously on the server browser requires targeted evaluation to prevent launch issues.

Fans Praise Tactical Gunplay but Question Gated Access

WARDOGS Scope

The closed beta structure and initial playtest phases have sparked a mixed debate across community spaces like X, Reddit, and Steam discussion boards. While players have overwhelmingly praised the game's gunplay, tactical depth, and team-driven mechanics, some community members voiced frustration over why the test remains closed rather than opting for a fully open public beta. Discussions frequently center on a division between players wanting immediate, fast-paced action and those embracing the game's slower, deliberate pacing.

Alongside the playtest, Bulkhead remains slated for a major showcase during The FPS Games Show.
