Total War: Warhammer 40K Will Let Players Strategically Destroy Terrain

Total War: Warhammer 40,000 An Ork firing a cannon

Total War: Warhammer 40,000 will make battlefields more than static backdrops, with terrain and cover that can be reshaped during combat.

Total War Warhammer 40,000 Shows How Terrain and Cover Affect Combat

Cover Changes How Battles Play Out

Total War: Warhammer 40,000 showed more of its battlefields during Creative Assembly’s first Total War: Show & Tell stream, a special presentation for upcoming Total War projects. The Warhammer 40,000 segment featured in-development campaign and battle footage, including a look at different battlefield maps and how terrain can affect combat.

The presentation was meant to give players an early look at Creative Assembly’s upcoming Total War projects, including how Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is adapting the series’ large-scale battles to Games Workshop’s far-future sci-fi setting.

Total War: Warhammer 40,000 will follow the Total War series’ signature blend of turn-based campaign and large real-time battles, bringing that formula into Games Workshop’s grimdark sci-fi universe. In this far-future setting, factions wage galaxy-spanning wars with infantry, tanks, walkers, and massive war machines.

The game’s four launch factions also show how different those wars can look. Space Marines are elite genetically enhanced soldiers of the Imperium, while the Astra Militarum relies on massed human armies, tanks, and artillery. Orks bring brutal numbers and ramshackle war machines, while the Aeldari are an ancient alien race known for speed, precision, and advanced technology.

Creative Assembly’s Steam page highlights dynamic destruction as one of the game’s battle features. Weapon and ability impacts can reshape terrain, creating new cover and fresh tactical opportunities during combat.

Terrain Damage Could Change How Armies Advance

Breakable cover could make battles more flexible, especially when armies need to push through dense terrain or enemy-held positions. If cover is protecting enemy units, players may be able to break through it instead of simply moving around it.

That could matter for factions built around different combat styles. Warhammer Community says Total War: Warhammer 40,000 will launch with four factions: Space Marines, Astra Militarum, Orks, and Aeldari. The Steam page also describes these factions as having different units, weapons, war machines, and methods of warfare.

Creative Assembly has not explained every breakable object or how each faction will interact with the system. Current official descriptions focus on dynamic destruction as a tactical layer during battles, so the exact limits of the system may become clearer once more gameplay details are shown.

Total War: Warhammer 40,000 Has No Release Date Yet

Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is currently listed with no release date. The game is being developed by Creative Assembly and published by SEGA, with its Steam page describing it as a fusion of galactic strategy and grimdark warfare.

Warhammer Community says the game will release for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, making it the Total War franchise’s debut on PlayStation and Xbox consoles. The game is set in the Indomitus Era, a major Warhammer 40,000 timeline where the Imperium is fighting to reclaim and defend worlds after the galaxy was split by a massive warp rift. Space Marines, Astra Militarum, Orks, and Aeldari are confirmed as launch factions.
