9 Years’ Worth of Ideas After Miitomo

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream has been in development for 9 years after work on the series’ mobile social app "Miitomo" began to settle down. In an interview with key developers at Nintendo EDP, director Ryutaro Takahashi revealed that his and producer Yoshio Sakamoto’s "special attachment" to the series led to the project, which kicked off around 2017.
Takahashi expressed that even though he and Sakamoto initially thought they had "already squeezed all" they could into the 2013 Tomodachi Life game on the Nintendo 3DS, they still felt a strong desire to make a new entry in the series. When Living the Dream’s development started, they changed their approach from simply adding new items to giving players more options to create their own content.

"The concept of Tomodachi Life is to be ‘the ultimate inside joke game’ that can be enjoyed among people who are close to each other or share things in common," explained Takahashi. "We felt that [user-generated content (UGC)], which lets players create whatever they want, fit well with this concept."
With the Nintendo Switch’s processing power, they could also give Miis free rein of the island in ways they couldn’t before with the 3DS. Because Miis could now move around in a larger space, the developers could increase their activities and provide more opportunities to "replicate a wide variety of inside jokes with UGC". "It's nine years’ worth of ideas crammed into one game," laughed Takahashi.
Mii Designs Almost Changed

Another consideration the developers made because of the Nintendo Switch’s higher specs was the design of the Miis. According to Takahashi, they initially wanted to redesign the Miis to be more visually appealing, "in line with the current generation of game consoles". However, they stopped as soon as the Miis started to feel "off".
Art director Daisuke Kageyama elaborated that players treated Miis in Tomodachi Life less as avatars and more as living beings "they pour affection into". With people’s strong attachment and emotions toward the Miis, they eventually decided against changing the designs and resolved to re-examine each part of the Miis from the ground up and add new custom features to "bring a sense of newness unique" to Living the Dream.
Young Developers Saved Iconic Features From Being Cut

As development on Living the Dream continued, the schedule got tight, and many directors and leads were tempted to let some features go. Programming director Takaomi Ueno said that there were newer team members who were very passionate fans of the series, insisting that "[they] absolutely have to include ‘this’".
Mii News, which would cast the residents in a news program to deliver updates on the island or random skits, would have been cut due to time constraints, says Takahashi. It was only when a younger designer chimed in and said that Mii News gave the "game its character" and that "it just wouldn’t feel like Tomodachi Life" when they relented and continued work on it.

Despite hesitation from veteran developers, the young designer went around talking to people to figure out how they could realistically put Mii News back into Living the Dream, revealed Takahashi.
"It was incredibly reassuring to see teammates stepping up, saying, ‘I'll take charge!’ and driving things forward. The game’s quality owes a lot to those passionate individuals who took ownership and responsibility," said Kageyama.
Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream launches tomorrow, April 16, 2026, for the Nintendo Switch, with built-in compatibility for the Nintendo Switch 2. For more information leading up to the release of the latest life sim, check out our article below.
