Big Games, Big Prizes

This week starts off the massive list of games that September will showcase, beginning with The Blood of Dawnwalker and Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Crimson Moon also made its debut recently. Over at gacha games, Neverness to Everness (NTE) finally closes its Scarlet Letter Saga.
The Blood of Dawnwalker

The Blood of Dawnwalker is an open-world ARPG that follows Coen, a Dawnwalker who possesses the ability to shift between human form by day, and a vampire by night. Set in 14th century Europe, it tells our protagonist’s tale of duty and revenge.
Its story is riveting, and while its 30-day timeline has both supporters and detractors alike, it adds a new dimension to its gameplay experience. However, the same cannot be said for the combat—a finicky, janky mess at times that mirrors The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s. While upgraded, it still feels a bit heavy to wield.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is the long-awaited sequel and latest entry in the iconic Onimusha series. It spotlights Musashi Miyamoto, a lone but legendary swordsman, who met his unfortunate end way too early on his journey. Unable to accept it, he accepts an Oni Gauntlet for another chance at life, and is unwittingly pulled into something more—purge the Genma from the land and bring peace to the world.
It took all of its foundations and made it much better. Way of the Sword might just be the best gameplay experience out of all the Onimusha titles—interesting story, a well-fleshed out protagonist that lends himself to a strong narrative, and an engaging combat identity done right.
Granblue Fantasy

Granblue Fantasy is a free-to-play turn-based RPG released in 2014, and boasts a sprawling repertoire of content, from hundreds of characters, various stories, intricate progression, and tons of endgame content. It follows Gran/Djeeta and their companion Vyrn as they meet Lyria, who is pursued by a large empire. After several chapters of MSQ, they set out together as a crew and go on various adventures and journeys bigger than they ever thought possible.
Time only aged it like fine wine: ten years down the road and Granblue Fantasy still provides players something to return to, especially for those who have committed long-term to reap the rewards. However, it might not be for everyone—the grind never ends, and progression rewards the faithful. Nevertheless, it’s no surprise that it’s stayed for this long. Players will always come back, and for good reason.
Neverness to Everness (NTE) Story Review

Neverness to Everness (NTE) finished up its Scarlet Letter saga with its latest patch, 1.3, introducing Chapter 6: Fogden Game. The BAC (represented by ETD-6) and Eibon joined forces to finally take down Scarlet Letter’s big antagonist, Madam T, hoping to finally put an end to her schemes.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t as satisfying of an ending as it was probably going for. Draggy story sections, slow pacing, and the broken momentum from the previous patch wasn’t doing it any favors. All’s well that ends well, but it’s not looking too hot moving forward if this is the direction that they’re going for.
Crimson Moon

Crimson Moon is a co-op action-adventure roguelike with Soulslike elements that features bloody and brutal combat against enemies ranging from the denizens of the undead to ancient gods. Players take on the role of a Nephilim, a human born out of heresy between a human and an angel, a forbidden origin, as they fight against the aforementioned forces of evil to save the world.
It’s jank, but it’s fascinating jank—it’s fun in all the right places, especially with a great progression system and engaging co-op, but it could use polish here and there on the story, its small weapon pool, and its unfortunate lack of accessibility options.
