The Sinking City 2's New Gameplay Trailer Features Less Investigations, More Occult

A humanoid fish-like creature
The Sinking City 2 revealed a new extended gameplay trailer showcasing combat, story, and gameplay mechanics. Find out about all the details below.

Doubling Down on Survival Horror

Different City, Same Eldritch Problems

The Sinking City 2 has revealed a 12-minute extended gameplay trailer showcasing combat, Lovecraftian monsters, and a quick look at the series' returning investigation mechanic, posted by developers Frogwares on their YouTube channel. The trailer also teased story elements through cutscenes and several in-game locations.

Moving away from Oakmont but still set in 1920s Massachusetts, the sequel takes place within the fictional Arkham city, a frequent setting for HP Lovecraft's works. Despite the familiar cosmic horror mythology, The Sinking City 2 switches up its genre, ditching the detective mystery for more traditional survival horror, putting combat and exploration first before its hallmark investigation mechanic.

Detective Work is Now Optional

Sinking City 2
The video follows new protagonist Calvin making his way through the ruined Arkham city, battling through eldritch horrors to rescue his romantic partner, Faye. Instead of exploring through the sunken open-world while conducting investigations at a leisurely pace like the previous game, Calvin doesn't have the time to do that. The video shows Calvin exploring, surviving, and moving through mainly the Arkham Fish Market and an abandoned ship in a more linear fashion.

The returning Investigation mechanic isn't the main pillar of the game anymore. Since it doesn't serve as the central gimmick, many of the features associated with it are lost. The video gives an example of the streamlined Investigation mechanic, where Calvin connects collected clues through a simple menu to earn supplies, safer routes, and upgrades.

An occult ritual of blood
Fans who loved the deliberate detective work aided by supernatural abilities in the last game and in games like Silver Pines will not find it in the sequel.

Frogwares Head of Publishing, Sergey Oganesyan, commented on deemphasizing the mechanic, "We want investigation to be a beneficial part of the game but just for those who want it, offering tangible gameplay bonuses and eureka moments without it being a requirement to progress." Sergey also mentioned that there will be accessibility features to help players who aren't "keen on combat and survival-horror mechanics."

Lovecraftian-Flavored Survival Horror

The Sinking City 2 continues its signature slow combat against eldritch horrors, with deliberate tweaks to be similar in scope to its survival horror contemporaries like Resident Evil. Compared to its predecessor, combat is slower and less chaotic but more intense. Calvin has even less ammo to work with and has to focus on shooting weakpoints while saving resources with melee combat and taking advantage of the new environmental hazards.

Calvin has to juggle inventory management with limited inventory space, as the sequel leaves behind the weapon wheel that allowed previous hero Charles Reed to carry a whole armory in his pocket. Additionally, the new protagonist doesn't have to contend with the Sanity meter in-and-out of combat anymore.

Help from the Abyss

An enchanted mask latched to a bag
The Sinking City 2 doubles down on its occult themes, weaving supernatural rituals and mysterious artifacts more directly into Calvin's journey. For example, the mysterious glass-like mask seen latched on Calvin's back is somehow a vessel for Faye, guiding him to find her lost body, and also appears to be a revival item of some sort. In the video, Calvin takes a fatal hit during combat; the mask lights up with an array of magical light, resurrecting Calvin and giving him another chance to continue the fight.

In another scene, he encounters an Innsmouther, the fish-like sea people encountered in the first game, named Ma Fishface. The owner of Arkham's Fish Market specializes in artifacts, suggesting she could help decipher these enigmas during the campaign.

New Game+ Confirmed

A colossal mess of limbs and flesh
Alongside the extended trailer, The Sinking City 2 has also confirmed New Game+ mode will be available on its launch date, according to press materials reported by Gematsu. This mode is unlocked after completing the main story and provides an incentive to replay the campaign.

Players will carry over all of their perk points, perks, and items to the start of their run. Frogwares says these additional power-ups will gear players up to better tackle certain achievements, as well as unlock cosmetic and gameplay rewards.

Arkham fish market with an octopus facade

While the first game's implementation of its Investigation mechanic was contentious, often regarding how it slowed down mandatory progression, it was a signature pillar that set it apart from other games.

The Sinking City 2 is pulling off a big gamble by trading its open-world detective identity for a more traditional survival horror experience, where it will inevitably be compared to legacy franchises. Whether it pays off entirely depends on how Frogwares can elevate combat and exploration using HP Lovecraft's mythos, instead of feeling like reskins of the familiar tropes in the genre but with more tentacles.

The Sinking City 2 launches on August 18. For more information about its price, available consoles, and other details, check out our guide below:
