Subnautica 2 Gameplay

Survival and Exploration

Subnautica 2 Shooting an Alien Underwater

Subnautica 2's gameplay expands on the beloved survival and exploration loop of its predecessors, plunging players into an entirely new alien ocean world. It is a first-person adventure where players must manage vital stats, including oxygen, hunger, and thirst, while navigating a hostile, yet beautiful, underwater environment. Traversing the world is key, as players discover diverse biomes, unique creatures, and unearth the planet’s mysteries.

The game aims to maintain the series' signature blend of wonder and terror, with an emphasis on exploration, adaptation, and uncovering a compelling narrative.

Genetic Modification

The new genetic modification mechanic allows players to alter their biology by adapting alien DNA. This could grant abilities such as enhanced pressure tolerance, improved vision in dark depths, or better temperature regulation, directly impacting how players interact with and survive in the extreme conditions of the alien world.

New Biomes

subnautica 2 biome

With Subnautica 2 being a full-fledged sequel, the game is expected to feature an entirely new set of biomes for players to explore; areas that could terrify players or leave them in awe. While nothing has been officially confirmed by Unknown Worlds Entertainment, a Reddit user reportedly discovered assets from the game’s June 2025 developer blog that suggest players will be exploring new regions on the sequel’s alien planet.

According to the Reddit post, the user found references indicating that, aside from the Start Zone, players may be able to explore several underwater biomes, including:

 ⚫︎ Coral Gardens
 ⚫︎ Dolerite Spires
 ⚫︎ Graveyard Spires
 ⚫︎ Jelly Plateaus
 ⚫︎ Kelp Forest
 ⚫︎ Overgrown Ruins
 ⚫︎ Sparse Plains
 ⚫︎ VepZone
 ⚫︎ Void
 ⚫︎ World Tree

While these areas are not indicative of the final version of the game, there is a possibility that these biomes could change at any time during development. Still, the discovery provides an early glimpse into what players might expect to explore, and what horrors or wonders may await in the upcoming sequel.

Base Building

The new base-building system in Subnautica 2 moves away from the rigid, fixed components of previous games in favor of a "procedural" and "sculptural" approach. This overhaul allows players to break free from preset room shapes, offering the flexibility to customize layouts, adjust window designs, and apply diverse paint colors and lighting effects.

By focusing on creative expression, the system enables survivors to build more unique, personalized undersea habitats while maintaining the core functionality of the original series.

Online Multiplayer

The game introduces online co-op for up to four players, allowing friends to explore together, construct custom bases, and face the deep-sea challenges as a team. Despite this, the developers emphasized that Subnautica 2 still focuses on its single-player experience.

Subnautica 2 Story

Subnautica 2 Plot

Subnautica 2's story places players in the role of a pioneer exploring a brand-new, previously unseen alien ocean world, distinct from Planet 4546B. As players venture into this uncharted deep, they quickly discover that this seemingly pristine environment harbors significant dangers and anomalies.

Despite the planet's extreme conditions posing a direct threat to human survival, the player's ship AI insists on completing its mission. This forces the protagonist not only to survive but also to adapt to the alien environment.

The new genetic modification mechanic is also embedded in the story, allowing players to alter their biology to overcome the planet's harsh challenges and continue their investigation, uncovering what exactly has gone wrong and why this perilous mission is so vital.

Subnautica 2 Setting

Subnautica 2 Underwater Setting

Subnautica 2 takes players beyond the familiar waters of Planet 4546B to an entirely new alien oceanic world, offering a fresh environment filled with diverse biomes and undiscovered lifeforms. While the game maintains the series' signature sense of isolation and wonder, it introduces a cooperative multiplayer option, allowing up to four players to explore the depths together.

This new setting serves as the backdrop for a deepening narrative that expands the franchise's lore while challenging survivors to navigate both beautiful and terrifying aquatic ecosystems.
