Stranger Than Heaven Story and Cast Revealed
Featuring Snoop Dogg and Other Stars
Stranger Than Heaven, Ryu Ga Gotoku (RGG) Studios’ next title, will feature hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg and other celebrities. As revealed during the game’s dedicated Xbox Presents show on May 6, the action-adventure is set to launch in Winter 2026.
The game’s narrative features a star-studded cast, including Snoop Dogg and his son Cordell Broadus, alongside Dean Fujioka (live-action Fullmetal Alchemist), Yu Shirota (Hana-Kimi), and Shogun stars Moeka Hoshi and Tokuma Nishioka. The lineup is further bolstered by Akio Otsuka (Lupin III), Takashi Ukaji (Tokyo Park), and the late Bunta Sugawara (Battles Without Honor and Humanity), with musical contributions from Tori Kelly, Satoshi Fujihara, and ADO.
Honoring the Late Bunta Sugawara
Among the distinguished ensemble is the late iconic Japanese actor Bunta Sugawara. The famous actor starred in multiple films in the Battles Without Honor and Humanity series in the 1970s.
These films became massive hits in the yakuza genre and served as a major inspiration for RGG’s portrayal of the Japanese underworld. In the upcoming Stranger Than Heaven, his likeness is used for the yakuza boss Genzo Iwaki, who is voiced by the renowned Japanese actor Takashi Ukaji.
According to a press release by SEGA, they received formal consent from his family with the help of Toei Company, Ltd., which produced many of the Battles Without Honor and Humanity films.
Spanning Across Five Time Periods
The dedicated Xbox Presents also showcased a deep dive into never-before-seen gameplay and lore about the upcoming title. Stranger Than Heaven is a sweeping epic that tells a 50-year saga in the life of Makoto Daito. Born in the United States to a Japanese mother and American father, Makoto is orphaned at a young age and forced to navigate a grueling upbringing in the West.
In 1915, seeking a fresh start, he stows away on a Japan-bound vessel, only to be caught by Orpheus (Snoop Dogg), a smuggler described by the actor as both "cutthroat and charismatic." Alongside him is Yu Shinjo (Dean Fujioka), another youth seeking a fresh start in the Land of the Rising Sun.
Orpheus took both boys under his wing as they voyaged across the sea to Japan. They eventually docked in Kokura, Fukuoka, a region notorious for its heavy industry and rising crime. While Makoto became Orpheus’s right-hand man thanks to his fluency in Japanese, Yu sought separate employment, fueled by a growing ambition to "reshape Japan."
Makoto and Yu eventually drifted apart after falling out due to their differing visions of life. However, as the years passed, they were reunited in the world of show business, where they found themselves swept up in a series of chaotic and unpredictable situations.
Inspired by Real-Life Japanese Cities
One of the highlights of the game is its meticulous recreation of Japanese cities across various historical eras. The story begins in 1915 Kokura, Fukuoka, a city defined by a booming industrial sector that attracts job seekers from across the nation, contrasted by a gritty underworld of vice, gambling, and nightlife.
In 1929, the narrative shifts to the multicultural shipbuilding hub of Kure, Hiroshima, where Makoto rises through the Yakuza underworld to join the powerful Iwaki Family, earning the formidable title of the "Red Oni." By 1943, the story shifts to Minami, Osaka, a luminous entertainment hub where Makoto and Yu reunite to navigate the burgeoning show business scene.
Then, in 1951, the game moved to the scenic resort of Atami, Shizuoka, showcasing Japan’s natural beauty and iconic cherry blossoms against a less urban backdrop. The story concludes in 1965 Shinjuku, Tokyo, where a "tremendous secret" is set to be revealed as the narrative reaches its climax.
The Show Business
Within the narrative, the game places greater emphasis on Makoto’s affinity with music. According to Game Director Mikonobu Abe, the protagonist has a "keen ability to find the music in everyday life, [memorizing] the sounds as ideas for future compositions."
Makoto can "record" environmental sounds, such as passing trains or combat impacts, to build an era-specific library of audio samples. He can then bring these recordings to in-game composers to layer them with various instruments and moods, crafting entirely original musical pieces.
As a showman, Makoto manages performances by organizing show structures, selecting setlists, and arranging bands from a diverse roster. Players expand this lineup by scouting talent through NPC observation and intel, fostering relationships with performers who possess remarkable abilities.
Along the way, Makoto will meet Takashi (Satoshi Fujiwara) and Suzy (Tori Kelly), further growing his show business venture. "Stranger Than Heaven brings players inside Japan’s showbusiness world at a pivotal moment in the country’s history, and unsurprisingly, showbiz’s customs and culture turn out to be just as cutthroat as the underworld’s," Kelly said.
Fighting Left and Right
Departing from the Yakuza series' traditional beat-em-up style, Stranger Than Heaven introduces a unique combat system where players control Makoto's left and right sides independently. This mechanic is what Producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto calls "one of the biggest features of this title."
Using the shoulder buttons and triggers, players can perform simultaneous actions such as blocking with one arm while counterattacking with the other. This dynamic system emphasizes tactical timing, allowing players to charge powerful strikes or execute dual-trigger tackles by carefully reading enemy movements.
Beyond his fists, Makoto utilizes a vast weapon roster ranging from traditional katanas to era-specific inventions, all of which can be upgraded with unique passive abilities and special attacks. The combat also features cinematic finishers and context-sensitive strikes, including high-stakes sequences like close-quarters brawls inside moving vehicles.
First revealed as "Project Century" in June 2025, RGG’s latest project sparked significant excitement as a bold departure from the iconic Yakuza/Like a Dragon franchise. While Stranger Than Heaven maintains subtle ties to the series through its connection to the Tojo Clan, its leap into different eras, new locations, and an overhauled combat system provides a distinctly fresh experience.
