Steins;Gate Re:Boot launches on August 20 with a full ban on gameplay streams and uploads. The reboot also introduces new animation technology designed to make character interactions feel more lifelike. Here’s what developer Mages revealed.
Steins;Gate Re:Boot Will Not Permit Gameplay Streams or Uploads
Mages Says Sharing Features Are Limited to Personal Use

Steins;Gate Re:Boot developer Mages announced that players will not be allowed to stream or upload gameplay footage of the upcoming reboot when it launches on August 20.
In an official announcement published on the game’s website, machine-translated from Japanese, Mages said it "does not give any permission" for livestreams, gameplay videos, or commentary uploads of the game "due to the product characteristics" of the title, though the developer did not elaborate further on the statement. Restrictions like these are not uncommon for story-heavy visual novels, where watching uploaded footage can sometimes closely replicate the gameplay experience. While some console sharing functions will still be available, the company clarified that these features are intended only for private and personal use.

Their statement further explained that livestreams and public uploads fall outside the scope of personal use because they are shared with an unspecified number of viewers. Similar spoiler-related restrictions have also appeared in previous Steins;Gate releases, including Steins;Gate: My Darling's Embrace.
In one 2023 case reported by the Content Overseas Distribution Association (CODA), a man was sentenced to two years in prison with a five-year suspended sentence and fined one million yen after uploading copyrighted gameplay footage and ending content from the game to YouTube without permission. Mages has not stated whether similar legal action would be pursued for Steins;Gate Re:Boot.
The Reboot Aims to "Bring Characters to Life"

The studio also shared additional details about the reboot’s presentation upgrades, including an "E-mote" animation tool that allows characters to display more "fluid" expression changes, blinking animations, hair movement, and smoother transitions during dialogue scenes.
Compared to the more static presentation of the 2009 original release, the reboot features noticeably livelier character interactions, with Kurisu Makise (one of the game’s main heroines) and Mayuri Shiina (childhood friend of Rintaro Okabe, the protagonist) showcasing some of the most visible changes. According to Mages, the updated animation system was designed to "bring characters to life" and "elevate immersion in the story to new heights".

Moreover, the reboot also features fully redrawn character art, backgrounds, and event stills. MAGES. stated that the number of event stills has approximately doubled compared to the original Xbox 360 release.
The story itself has also been adjusted based on the structure used in another title, Steins;Gate Elite. Mages additionally confirmed that a new worldline and ending scenario have been added to the reboot, although further details about the additions have not yet been revealed. The reboot also features fully rerecorded in-game voice lines and remade background music by composer Takeshi Abo, who also worked on the original 2009 game.
Returning to a World of Altered Timelines

Announced during the series’ 15th anniversary celebration in October 2024, Steins;Gate Re:Boot reimagines the original 2009 visual novel, which follows self-proclaimed "mad scientist" Rintaro Okabe and his friends after they accidentally discover a way to send messages to the past using a modified microwave. However, their experiments eventually lead to unexpected consequences as the group becomes caught in a larger conflict involving time travel and changing timelines.
