State of Decay 3 Gameplay
No full gameplay footage has been released for State of Decay 3 yet, but the newly released alpha playtest trailer confirms that the familiar third-person combat returns. Like its predecessors, players must stave off the apocalypse by building bases and managing their own community of survivors. Scavenging resources and completing missions are still part of its gameplay loop.
Survivors will also face swarms of undead with unique archetypes. While specific details are still under wraps, players can expect a familiar mix of zombies, from standard walkers to hulking brutes.
The game supports both solo play and four-player co-op. Although many details remain unannounced, Undead Labs has confirmed that they aim to enhance and refine both the solo and cooperative gameplay experiences.

State of Decay 3 has no official story plot revealed yet, but based on its predecessors, the series typically does not follow a fixed narrative. In State of Decay 2, the story was largely emergent, shaped by player actions as they controlled a group of survivors tasked with establishing a safe haven amid a zombie outbreak.
While there were small story beats delivered through NPC side quests, these were largely optional and not essential to the overall experience, which focused on building bases, managing resources, and supporting your community’s survival.
State of Decay 3 Setting
Like previous State of Decay titles, State of Decay 3 is set in a post-apocalyptic America overrun by hordes of undead. While no specific U.S. states have been confirmed, players can expect snow-capped mountains alongside urban and suburban neighborhoods. As the third entry in the series, the game is also expected to feature larger areas, including sprawling cityscapes filled with skyscrapers and dense environments for exploration and survival.
