Starfield’s PS5 Release Draws Ire From Fans Citing Major Bugs and Frequent Crashes

Starfield’s recent PlayStation 5 release opens to significant controversy from several players reporting "game-breaking" bugs. Find out more about the issues stemming from the release, and what fans have to say about them.

Starfield Players Mass Report Major Freezing and Crashes

Relentless Torrent of Issues Has Rendered the PS5 Version "Unplayable"

Starfield is currently facing a rocky PS5 release, as players flock to social media to decry game-breaking issues that have prevented them from enjoying the sci-fi action RPG. Players on Reddit, Twitter (X), and the official Starfield Discord server have reported frequent freezes and crashes that have rendered the game "unplayable."

Following Starfield’s PS5 release on April 7, Starfield players who purchased the game on the console came together to discuss the many issues they encountered while playing the game. They claimed that it would freeze multiple times within hours of booting. One user noted 20 instances of this, many of which notably occurred while they were building ships and scanning planets.

Others reported the same problems when scanning planets and building outposts. One Reddit user pointed out that similar incidents were likely caused by high-density planets overloading their devices and causing the game to be rendered unresponsive and forcing players to close it. However, other users in the same thread said that the game would still freeze while they were trying to save their progress. As of now, it’s difficult for the community to pinpoint a specific cause behind the technical complications.

The issues plaguing the game have also prevented players from finding a temporary solution. Individuals who complained about the bugs recommended that others turn off the autosave function. This solution has reportedly only worked for a few individuals. Some players have tried clearing their console’s cache, repairing the PS5 storage in Safe Mode, deleting and reinstalling the game, or even cleaning the console itself—but to no avail.

Fans are divided in their overall response to Starfield's PS5 launch. Those who have been genuinely enjoying their experience are content to wait for future hotfixes. Others, however, are demanding refunds.

Bethesda’s History of Rocky Launches

Since reports about the bugs and crashes began pouring in, neither Bethesda Game Studios nor Bethesda Softworks have publicly acknowledged the issue. But given the nature of the reports and the recent release of the major Free Lanes and Terra Armada updates, players believe that it is unlikely that they will be able to roll out a hotfix immediately.

In response to the recent issues surrounding the PS5 launch of Starfield, fans under the r/Starfield subreddit and official Starfield Discord have reminded other players that this level of turbulence upon launch should be expected of Bethesda. This is because Bethesda has garnered some level of notoriety for releasing what are essentially "unfinished" titles replete with major performance issues that took inordinate stretches of time to resolve.

However, they also reminded fellow players that several updates eventually addressed most of the problems that ailed Fallout 76, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and even the Xbox and PC versions of Starfield. Though it may take time, the developers will eventually deliver updates to resolve player complaints.

Starfield is now available on Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, and the PlayStation 5. For more information about the game, feel free to check out our article below!
