Diablo 4 is bringing back its namesake villain for Season 15, alongside other iconic characters and locations. Read on to find out more details about how Blizzard is revisiting previous installments of the franchise in time for its announced sequel.
Diablo’s Biggest Names and Iconic Locations Return on September 15
Diablo’s Main Antagonist Appears After a Three-Year Absence
The Lord of Terror Diablo will make his first ever appearance in Diablo 4 as part of Season 15, Season of Hell’s Legacy, which launches on September 15. Revealed at the game’s "What’s Next Panel" at BlizzCon 2026, the upcoming season brings back all three Prime Evils, with players facing Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto as part of its seasonal questline.
It’s an overdue appearance for the franchise’s namesake villain. Diablo was the final boss of the original Diablo, returned as a central antagonist in Diablo 2, and again took center stage in Diablo 3. Diablo 4 notably went in another direction, initially focusing on Lilith before later expansions, Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred, shifted focus to Mephisto. This time around, the Lord of Terror doesn’t return in canon, but instead appears as a nightmare or haunting that plagues the Dark Wanderers.

These three mysterious Dark Wanderers were previously playable characters, now violent vessels for the Prime Evils. Players will need to confront them and dive into their Waking Nightmares, memories and nightmares from key events in the franchise’s past, to confront echoes of Diablo beneath Tristram Cathedral, Baal at Arreat Summit, and Mephisto within the Durance of Hate.
Lead Encounter Designer Owen Leach calls these Waking Nightmares "recreations from previous Diablo games," but built in "Diablo 4’s art style and compelling gameplay."
Season of Hell’s Legacy Doubles Down on Nostalgia by Rebuilding Diablo’s Past
The iconic Horadim Deckard Cain returns as a lost soul, guiding players to investigate the Dark Wanderers as Season of Hell’s Legacy looks backward to celebrate 30 years of Diablo by revisiting the characters, locations, loot, and battles that defined the series. Blizzard describes the season as a "living history" of the previous games, refreshed and recreated inside Diablo 4. As Senior Game Director Brent Gibson put it during the panel, "there’s something for every single Diablo player coming up in this season."
Aside from the three Prime Evils, Leach revealed that the team recreated 20 returning bosses and 25 classic monsters for the season, pulling enemies from across the series such as Blood Raven, Archbishop Lazarus, the Summoner, Nihlathak, and Diablo 3’s Queen Araneae.

Familiar NPCs on the friendlier side are being rebuilt too, including Diablo’s Pepin the Healer and Griswold the Blacksmith, alongside an angelic Tyrael modeled after his Diablo 2 appearance. The developers stated that they rebuilt their models for Diablo 4 but imported voice lines and music from the older games, meaning returning characters can literally sound as players remember them.
The same approach extends to its locations and encounters. Waking Nightmares reconstruct recognizable pieces of Sanctuary with Diablo IV’s visuals. The largest recreation rebuilds the descent from the original Diablo almost in its entirety, from the Cathedral and its underground depths all the way down to Hell, with Leach describing it simply as "a recreation of almost all of Diablo 1."

Even the unique rewards are pulled from the series’ history. Nine permanent Legacy Uniques revive famous items such as Stone of Jordan, Leoric’s Crown, Messerschmidt’s Reaver, The Furnace, and In-Geom, while the season’s cosmetics pay homage to the familiar armor sets.

Season 15 is both a celebration and something of a handoff. Blizzard is using Diablo 4 to revisit 30 years of the series’ history but also announced the game’s conclusion, with no more expansions planned for the fourth installment. Speaking to PC Gamer at BlizzCon 2026, Gibson says that the team "feel[s] like we told the Story of Hatred," and that they are ready to move towards "telling the Story of Terror".
Even as the team shifts more resources to Diablo 5, set for Spring 2029, updates will continue, including the upcoming Amazon class in 2027, as Blizzard still needs to bridge the 100-year gap to the fifth installment. Much like Diablo 2: Resurrected and Diablo 3, Gibson is willing to "support the game for a very long time".
Season 15: Season of Hell’s Legacy rolls out for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Battle.net and Steam on September 15, 2026. Additionally, Diablo 4 launches for Switch 2 on the same date.
