Ninja Theory's Third Hellblade Game, Senua, Set to Release Next Year
A New Senua Adventure

Ninja Theory has officially announced the third Hellblade game, Senua, during the Xbox Games Showcase.
The latest entry takes players back into a vision of purgatory shaped by Senua’s perception of her childhood homeland, creating a setting that blends memory, myth, and personal trauma. In this interpretation, Senua is effectively returning home while remaining trapped between life and death.
The game will also retain the series’ signature immersive audio design, which portrays the experience of living with psychosis.
According to Ninja Theory studio head Dom Matthews in a recent Xbox Wire interview, Senua represents a "bold new step" for the series as it shifts further into the action-adventure genre compared to the previous game’s more linear structure.

Matthews explained that Senua’s beliefs and understanding of the world allow her to influence and reshape reality within the game’s surreal environments. In the gameplay trailer, she is seen breaking and distorting reality, as well as unlocking abilities that can be used for crowd control against enemies.
Combat has also been expanded, with Senua no longer limited to her sword. She is now able to pick up and use weapons dropped by defeated enemies, adding more variety and flexibility to encounters.
Matthews also addressed the decision to remove Hellblade from the title, stating that this entry represents a "different style of game." He added, "We’re taking all of that goodness and adding the types of things that people expect from a premium action-adventure game."
A Familiar Yet New Gameplay Direction

Senua retains the third-person action roots of the previous games, but this time the experience will feature a more even balance between combat, traversal, and puzzle-solving, according to studio head Dom Matthews. The studio also cited its earlier work on DmC: Devil May Cry and Enslaved as key influences for this new direction.
Exploration has been significantly expanded compared to the original’s linear structure, with a more interconnected, Metroidvania-inspired world design. The studio noted that secrets can be found throughout the environment, with even ordinary elements potentially transforming based on Senua’s shifting perception. Matthews explained that a simple tree, for example, can become something meaningful when Senua develops a "new belief" about it, unlocking new abilities to use in the world.

Senua also moves at a faster walking speed compared to the previous two games and benefits from expanded traversal options, including combinations of jumping, vaulting, and climbing. Matthews added that the game will be "twice the size" of Hellblade II, making it the studio’s most ambitious project to date. He also clarified that Senua is not an open-world game, but a linear experience built around a more connected world design.
Senua is expected to release sometime in 2027 for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam. The game will also be available day one for Xbox Game Pass subscribers.
