Rotwood Gameplay

Rotwood is a roguelite that takes players through procedurally-generated levels. Each zone is filled with various monsters and formidable bosses. Players can choose from a variety of weapon types, each with their own combos and movesets to pick up and master.

Weapon Types

There are over five weapon types: Cannons, Hammers, Spears, Strikers, and Bows. Weapons have their own combos that players can string together by inputting certain movements, like rolls and basic attacks. Each weapon has distinct movesets, skills, and upgrades for players to find.

Roguelike Dungeons

Every run offers various power-ups and abilities, so players will want to pick up what they feel is right for them to grow stronger. There are safe rooms with merchants for players to find, offering either upgrades or potion refills.

At the end of each level are bosses, who serve as both tests and gateways to the next zone of Rotwood. Each boss has an attack pattern that players need to adapt to, not just their movement and combos, but also in their loadout and abilities.

Co-op

Players can choose to go solo or co-op with up to three friends, and battle across eight unique locations. Party members will need to coordinate, adapt to enemy patterns, and revive allies.

Base Camp

As players go on missions and rescue people, more shops and facilities will become available in the base camp. This is a hub where players can not only purchase upgrades and customize their loadout, but also farm, cook, and build relationships.

Rotwood Story

Rotwood is set in a corrupted world, beset by evil beasts. Players are tasked with battling these frenzied monsters to defend their home and live to see another day.

Rotwood Plot

Rotwood Hamish the Blacksmith and Flitt the Scout looking at the camera

Rotwood opens with the volcano’s eruption, shooting Rot across the land. A young Flitt, the leader of the Foxtails, watches as their grandfather is seemingly vaporized during the invasion. Years later, a Hunter approaches to join them and their group in an expedition to purge the source of Rot.

Aboard an airship, the Damselfly, they are joined by three other members of Foxtail: Hamish the Blacksmith, Berna the Armourer, and Toot the Battlemaster. While on their way to the volcano, with a device designed to destroy it in tow, vine tendrils sprang from the surrounding forest and sent the Damselfly crashing, scattering them.

With no other choice but to regroup, Flitt and the Hunter must work together to rescue their comrades and advance further into Rotwood.

Rotwood Setting

Rotwood forest with a volcano oozing purple magma, a cloud swirls above its apex, gleaming with pinkish-purple light

Rotwood is set in a forest of the same name, with various biomes leading to a volcano at its center, the source of all Rot. The location was once home to at least one small village, where Flitt and their grandpa used to reside. There are over eight biomes in the game, which include forests, groves, quarries, caverns, and more.
