Resident Evil Requiem’s free demo has just been released for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Capcom dropped the unexpected announcement on the game’s X (formerly Twitter) account on May 27, exactly three months after its initial release.
The demo features approximately twenty minutes of gameplay. It is important to note that data saved during the demo will not carry over to the full version of the game.
The first half of the demo is set early in the game and puts players in control of Grace Ashcroft as she tries to sneak and evade her way out of Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center, a sanatorium and one of the game's main locations.
Players control Leon Kennedy in the second half of the demo, which is set in the same location but during the latter portion of the full game. The game’s action and combat systems are showcased as Leon fights his way through zombies to reunite with Grace.
Fans Wonder, Why Now?
Resident Evil Requiem launched on February 27, 2026, to critical acclaim and was deemed by critics and fans as the perfect game to commemorate the iconic franchise’s 30th anniversary. It sold over 6 million copies just three weeks after launch, despite releasing on all platforms with no demo and a considerable $69.99 price tag.
With no need for a boost in sales, and full playthroughs and plot spoilers already up on the internet, fans are confused as to why Capcom decided to release a demo now.
Players took to the comments of the official announcement and various social media channels to express their surprise. Releasing a demo after the full launch of a game is highly unusual, and according to some Resident Evil fans, entirely pointless.
Some fans theorize that Capcom held off on releasing a demo pre-launch to avoid spoilers, while others believe the team was being cautious against people disliking the game’s multiple-perspective setup. A few have joked and theorized that a new Resident Evil game or a Resident Evil Requiem DLC is coming.
Players who had already purchased the game expressed their satisfaction at being able to try it on a different console without shelling out another $69.99. Fans have also been seen on social media encouraging non-fans to try the game now that a free version is available.
Prior to its February 2026 release, Resident Evil Requiem presented an hour-long playable demo to attendees of the Gamescom and PAX West 2025 conventions. However, the game’s producer, Masato Kumazawa, confirmed in a 2025 interview with Stevivor that a demo would not be made available to the public before launch. "We just want to focus on finishing off the game," he said.
