Build 42 Brings in Second Major Resurgence
Project Zomboid reached a new all-time concurrent player peak last August 2, following the stable release of its long-awaited Build 42 update, according to SteamDB. The early-access zombie survival game reached 121,603 players on Steam, almost doubling its previous peak of 65,505 players last January 2022.
The milestone was largely thanks to developer The Indie Stone finally releasing Build 42.20 on the public stable branch on July 29, 2026. This major update for Project Zomboid had a long development history, starting from its first announcement in 2022. It entered public unstable testing on December 17th, 2024, a beta build where players could opt in and out of.
Since the update, the game has regularly reached a 24-hour peak of more than 100,000 concurrent players, placing it around the top fifteen in Steam's most-played games in terms of current player count near titles such as Stardew Valley and Slay the Spire 2.
Build 42 Expands Scope, Enriches Atmosphere
Project Zomboid joins other survival games reaching new heights with major updates this year, much like Palworld's 1.0 release. Veterans with hundreds of hours in the game are sharing that all the new details in the update make the game fresh and scary all over again. The renewed sense of discovery comes from the wealth of changes in Build 42.
In their blog post overviewing all the features, the developers said that the update "overhauls crafting and aims to give PZ the foundations of a more feature-rich late-game, let multiplayer games run further into the post-apocalypse, and expands the scope and depth of multiple systems game-wide."
The update also includes many smaller quality-of-life changes, like more efficient item storage and more sandbox settings. The full update contains many nuanced changes for players to discover, but a few major additions stand out as the highlights of Build 42.
Knox Country Has Doubled in Size

Build 42 features a heavily evolved Knox Country, reworking Kentucky to make these towns and cities "feel more lived-in, more natural, and more believable as places that existed long before everything went wrong," says the developers on their blog post. All buildings, houses, businesses, and landmarks are now unique and differ from each neighborhood, which is an improvement over the more generic placeholder buildings of the last update.
The developers stated that they have added over 1,400 unique buildings and 20,000 new tiles to accomplish this, including tall buildings, plus unique and procedurally generated basements, which were previously impossible due to technical limitations.

For now, this applies to Riverside, West Point, Rosewood, Fallas Lake, Muldraugh, Ekron, and Dixie. The remaining towns and Louisville city will come in a later update.
Outside of the familiar territory, Knox Country’s explorable world has also expanded with three new towns: Ekron, Irvington, and Brandenburg, including many named and unnamed smaller map locations. The update also includes expanded and randomized wilderness on the edges of the map, for those who prefer to leave all the zombies behind to live as a hermit.
New Crafting Methods

Crafting has received one of the most extensive overhauls of the update. Build 42 introduces new skills like masonry, carving, knapping, and blacksmithing. These also include their respective Workstations that can be made or discovered throughout the map.
Fortunately, the update also makes crafting more accessible with several UI improvements, such as allowing crafting inputs to be selectable, searching recipes through either their input or output items, and also letting players choose which specific ingredients they want to use.
Hunting and Animal Husbrandry
New animals and animal husbandry were two long-teased features, forming one of the major pillars of the update. Domestic and wild animals like sheep, chickens, pigs, cows, rats, rabbits, raccoons, and deer were added, along with their respective produce and meat for butchering them.
Aside from hunting them, players can go for the domestic route to take care of these animals: feeding, breeding, and collecting parts or meat when needed. Players can also engage in the revamped fishing activity, which includes the new ability to craft chum to attract more fish. Adding to that, the update also touches on farming by making it more realistic and by adding new crops.
For players who want to get right into testing these new systems, Build 42 adds new attendant occupations and skills. For example, there’s a new Rancher occupation for those looking to start their post-apocalyptic pasture, and new traits like Artisan and Tinkerer will enable those self-sufficient playstyles.
More Lore

Build 42 expands on Project Zomboid’s atmospheric environmental storytelling with more details about Knox Country and the people who lived there. New lore appears in the form of flyers, newspapers, book titles, vehicle liveries, TV and radio stations, annotated maps, random world stories, and hundreds of new decorative items.
The community has slowly been uncovering and sharing these new additions, including locations that hide unsettling scenes and personal tragedies. For example, one new lore book was found entitled "The New World Order" written by General John McGrew, a character often referred to through in-game broadcasts, adding more fuel to the conspiracy that the military started the outbreak.

Project Zomboid has delivered on many of the features and more since Build 42’s announcement in 2022. However, the attention to detail, atmosphere, and accessibility shows the developers care about player experience and immersion. Rather than place systems that already existed, Build 42 strengthened them and provided more ways for players to live out the zombie apocalypse on their terms.
