PlayStation Ends Physical Discs Because It Doesn't Make Money, and Fans Are Outraged

playstation 5 and ps5 controller

Sony announced that new PlayStation games will no longer release on physical discs starting January 2028. Here's everything about the announcement, how fans and brands responded, and what Sony's report data suggests.

Sony Ending Disc Production in 2028

Official Announcement from PlayStation

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that physical disc production for all new PlayStation games will end beginning January 2028. The announcement, shared on July 1 through the PlayStation Blog by Senior Director of Content Communications Sid Shuman, means releases after that point will only launch digitally through the PlayStation Store and participating retailers instead of on Blu-ray discs.

According to Sony, this move reflects changing consumer habits, with more players choosing digital purchases over physical media in recent years. The company emphasized that the change applies only to new releases beginning in 2028. Games already available on disc, or titles scheduled to launch physically before then, will remain unaffected. Sony also said it will continue investing in how players purchase and access games through the PlayStation Store and digital retail partners.

The announcement arrived alongside confirmation that the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PlayStation Vita will stop supporting new purchases. Together, the added decisions immediately reignited discussions about digital ownership, preservation, and the future of physical media.

Community and Public Reaction

The response online was immediate, with the overwhelming majority of reactions expressing disappointment. Sony's announcement on X (Twitter) accumulated more than 83 million views and 60,000 replies within its first day. Many players heavily criticized their choice, while the company's silence on social media for more than a day after the announcement quickly became another talking point.

Similar reactions appeared on the PlayStation Blog. Longtime fans argued that the decision removes the ability to lend, resell, or truly own games. Others pointed to Sony's separate announcement about removing previously purchased films from some PlayStation Store libraries because of licensing issues, saying the two developments together highlighted the risks of an all-digital future. The idea of players to "own nothing" became one of the most common responses across social media.

This discussion also spread quickly across Reddit. Some players said the announcement gave them another reason to move toward PC gaming, citing Steam as a more consumer-friendly platform. Others argued that physical copies remain the closest thing to true ownership, while digital purchases are ultimately licenses that can disappear if storefronts or licensing agreements change.

Sony's famous 2013 PlayStation 4 commercial resurfaced on social media, where a PlayStation employee demonstrated game sharing by simply handing another person a disc. The video originally mocked Microsoft's controversial Xbox One DRM plans, making its return especially ironic following Sony's latest announcement. This news also reignited comparisons with Nintendo's much-debated Game-Key Cards for the Switch 2. While the format had previously drawn criticism for requiring downloads despite being sold physically, some players online joked that Sony's announcement had unexpectedly made Nintendo's approach look like the more consumer-friendly middle ground.

Not every response was critical, however, as big-name brands instead used the announcement as the setup for jokes and memes. KFC Spain posted a parody announcement saying it would discontinue "physical chicken" and instead offer downloadable PNG chicken exclusively through its app, complete with DLC sauces and a fictional FriedChicken Pass. Domino's Pizza UK followed with its own joke after commenting the announcement made about as much sense as "switching to digital pizzas." Both posts quickly spread throughout gaming communities.

A fair portion of the community doesn’t think that the decision will dramatically change the industry. Circana senior analyst Mat Piscatella described the announcement as more of a "psychological shift than a true market shift," noting that digital purchases had already overtaken physical sales years ago.

What Sony's Reports Suggest

Sony's financial reports provide additional context for the company's transition toward an all-digital future. According to its FY2025 financial results, much of the Game & Network Services segment's revenue now comes from digital software, add-on content, subscriptions, and network services rather than hardware alone. Meanwhile, hardware revenue declined year over year as the PlayStation 5 entered a later stage of its lifecycle.

The company's Corporate Report 2025 reinforces the same direction. Sony identifies recurring digital revenue as a core part of its "Creative Entertainment Vision", highlighting subscriptions, online services, and digital content as major drivers of long-term growth. Physical software receives comparatively little attention throughout the report, suggesting discs are becoming a less prominent part of Sony's gaming business strategy.

They also expect the Game & Network Services segment to continue growing during FY2026 through stronger first-party software sales and the absence of the Bungie-related impairment losses brought about by failing to meet projected sales in the previous year. While Sony has yet to announce its next-generation PlayStation hardware, broader business trends have fueled speculation that future PlayStation devices could place a greater focus on digital distribution.

This shift may have already been potentially long planned, ever since the PlayStation 5’s 2020 launch of the console’s disc and digital editions. Sony, at this time, however, has not announced any plans regarding a PlayStation 6 or what possible upgrades may be up next.

For now, players still have roughly 18 months before Sony's new policy takes effect. The company has yet to directly address the public backlash, while questions surrounding collector's editions, existing physical libraries, backward compatibility, long-term game preservation, and ownership rights remain unanswered.
