Donnie Yen Joins Phantom Blade Zero as Creative Consultant

The announcement comes alongside an 11-minute trailer that follows Soul through several new encounters. The footage shows him fighting enemies on a speeding wagon before facing The Hunt, one of his former comrades.

These scenes offer another look at the game's fast-paced sword combat, while the upcoming State of Play will provide more information about the systems behind it. S-GAME has specifically pointed to player builds as one of the subjects of the presentation, with the developer saying that players will have room to shape how Soul fights.

Phantom Blade Zero follows Soul, an assassin who survives an attempt on his life but is left with only 66 days to live. He must deal with the people responsible for the attack while uncovering a larger conspiracy. PlayStation describes the game as a fusion of classic wuxia storytelling and action, with Unreal Engine 5 powering its world and combat. The game takes place in the Phantom World, a setting that draws from the style of classic Hong Kong action films.

Donnie Yen has served as a creative consultant on Phantom Blade Zero since 2023. He has worked with S-GAME on the game's combat design and brought his "martial arts and action filmmaking expertise" to the project to help deliver an authentic kung fu experience, according to Liang. Members of Yen's stunt team have contributed to the production as well. Yen will provide the facial and motion-capture performance for Mó Yuan, Soul's father, who appears masked in the pre-order trailer as he gives Soul a beating.

Yen is best known for his work in martial arts movies, with roles in films such as Ip Man, Flash Point, and SPL: Sha Po Lang. He has also played Chirrut Îmwe in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and portrayed Caine in John Wick: Chapter 4. His decades of experience as a martial artist, actor, and action choreographer have made him one of the most prominent figures in modern martial arts cinema.

S-GAME has described Phantom Blade Zero before as a "Kungfupunk" action game, with traditional wuxia elements mixed with "intricate machines reminiscent of steampunk." Previous footage has centered on its swordplay, which allows Soul to switch between different weapons and use a wide range of attacks against human and supernatural enemies. Liang said the presentation next week is expected to provide a much closer look at how these mechanics work.

Pre-orders for Phantom Blade Zero are now available on PS5. Players who pre-order will get early access to the Treasure Basin accessory and Legacy outfit, although both items can be unlocked through in-game progression after launch. The game is set to release on October 29, 2026.

Phantom Blade Zero was originally scheduled to launch on September 9, 2026, before S-GAME pushed the game back to October 29. The studio said the additional time will go toward polishing the game, with upgraded character models and reworked environments among the changes planned for release. The game's release will come nearly three years after its debut at the 2023 PlayStation Showcase, where S-GAME first introduced Soul and the Phantom World.
