People of Note Gameplay
People of Note is a turn-based RPG that structures its combat as interactive musical performances. Battles take place within "stanzas," where the turn order and action economy are dictated by time signatures; for example, a 4/4 signature grants the player four actions while the enemy receives four. The soundtrack during fights changes genre in real-time. Depending on the active musical style during a turn, specific party members receive attribute bonuses, such as increased damage or healing potency. Timing button presses to the visual and audible cues amplifies or maximizes the move’s effectiveness.
Character abilities and skills are determined by equipping Songstones, which act as interchangeable gems that define character archetypes. During combat, players can execute Mashups. These are somewhat akin to ultimate attacks, where band members combine their musical genres to deal massive damage.
Exploration is presented through fixed-camera environments reminiscent of classic JRPGs, where players navigate themed regions and dungeons. These areas contain puzzles and Theoretical Battles, which are isolated combat puzzles with set victory conditions.
People of Note Story
People of Note centers on Candace, an aspiring pop singer who is disqualified from the Noteworthy Song Contest. Realizing that her solo performance lacks the range required by the judges, she sets out across the world of Note to recruit a diverse ensemble of musicians.
Her journey takes her through various territories defined by musical genres, including the rock-centric town of Durandis, the EDM city of Lumina, and regions dedicated to rap and classical music. Along the way, she convinces figures like Fret, a veteran rocker disillusioned by genre gatekeeping, to join her cause and create a sound that crosses cultural boundaries.
While all of these are happening, a global phenomenon known as the Harmonic Convergence begins to disrupt the natural musical energies of the world. To restore balance, Cadence and her bandmates must resolve deep-seated ideological conflicts between the genre-based nations, often working through personal differences in full-length musical sequences.
