PEAK's Final Major Update, The Final Ascent, Is Now Live

The Final Ascent Cover Art

PEAK's final update, The Final Ascent, launched August 11 with two new biomes, a hunting monster, and Scoutmaster Myres's first voice lines, the last major update before PEAK shifts to bug fixes and console ports.

PEAK's Final Major Update Has Arrived

New Biomes, a Hunting Monster, and a Voiced Scoutmaster

PEAK's biggest and final content update, The Final Ascent, went live August 11 as a free download for all existing owners. Its headline addition is two new variant biomes: the fog-choked swamp Gloom and the vertical medieval fortress The Citadel, which replace the current Caldera and The Kiln biomes at random on daily maps. For the update's first two weeks, every map will exclusively pull from the new biomes before random rotation resumes.

Beyond the new areas, the update introduces a monster built to actively hunt players as they climb. Mysterious statues have also begun appearing across the island, tied to unspecified lore around the Scoutmaster's original lost troop. Myres himself speaks for the first time in the update, voiced by indie developer Xalavier Nelson Jr., founder of Strange Scaffold and creator of the noir action game El Paso, Elsewhere. The developers have also teased undisclosed content beyond what's listed in the patch notes, describing something "SUPER SECRET" reserved for "the most determined scouts," without elaborating further, alongside a handful of other unlisted additions.

The patch notes also detail a new Ascent 8 difficulty tier, joining PEAK's existing Ascent system of optional modifiers that stack extra challenges onto a run. Ascent 7 has been reworked as part of this update too: rather than blocking revives outright, it now punishes repeated deaths by increasing Curse, a negative status effect that permanently lowers a player's maximum stamina and, unlike most other status effects, doesn't wear off on its own over time.

Additionally, the update adds 10 new badges and matching cosmetics, a new Clown Luggage type, items including a Jetpack, Warp Fungus, and Glider, and Traditional Chinese localization. A long list of bug fixes and balance changes rounds out the patch, including changes intended to bring the Roots biome, one of PEAK's original areas, closer in line with Tropics, another existing biome, rather than standing out as the harder of the two. To mark the occasion, the patch notes confirm PEAK is also discounted 50% on Steam, down to $3.99 from its usual $7.99, through August 18.

Servers Struggled as Players Flooded Back

The update's scale was immediately visible in PEAK's server load. Shortly after launch, Landfall posted an in-game notice that was also shared on the studio's X (Formerly Twitter) account, warning that servers were "exploding" under demand, apologizing in advance if the game failed to load and reminding players to disable mods before jumping in, since The Final Ascent was expected to break most of them.

Steam's concurrent player numbers back up how significant that surge was. Per SteamDB, PEAK jumped from a baseline in the tens of thousands to a 24-hour peak of 122,714 players following the update's launch, with over 103,000 players online concurrently as of this writing. That puts the game within reach of its all-time peak of 170,759 concurrent players, set around its original June 2025 launch, more than a year ago, an unusually strong resurgence for a game marking the end of its content roadmap rather than the start of one.

That enthusiasm carries over into Steam's review numbers as well. PEAK currently holds an "Overwhelmingly Positive" rating from more than 135,000 user reviews, with a roughly 95% positive rate, a score the game has sustained essentially since launch. Reviewers have consistently pointed to the chaos of playing with friends as the game's core appeal, with the chaotic, failure-prone nature of the four-player co-op climbing loop cited repeatedly as the reason the game has resonated for over a year.

Fans Are Hyped, and Aggro Crab Is Right There With Them

Reaction on X to the update's launch has skewed almost entirely toward excitement, with replies to Aggro Crab's announcement post filled with anticipation over the new biomes and the Clown Luggage item type specifically.

Aggro Crab has stayed active in the update's replies, clarifying mechanics and fielding early bug reports. One player mistook a new Citadel mechanic for a bug after suffering an instant death at full health; Aggro Crab explained it's tied to a new amulet item with a hidden resource cost. Other early feedback included requests for balance changes, like one player asking the developers to nerf the game's frog enemies.

Aggro Crab and Landfall Are Moving On, But PEAK Isn't Going Away

That kind of turnout makes the update's other big announcement land differently: despite the strong numbers, Aggro Crab and Landfall confirmed The Final Ascent is PEAK's last major content update. In the official update post, the developers have said since the game's launch that PEAK was never intended to become a live-service title and that they wanted to avoid turning it into what they called a "forever game" that keeps adding content indefinitely just to hold players' attention. Both studios, developing under the joint name Landcrab, are made up of a small team who want to return to their own separate projects, with Aggro Crab already at work on its next announced game, Crashout Crew.

That doesn't mean PEAK is being abandoned, though. Per the update’s FAQ section, the game will continue receiving bug fixes and maintenance patches, and that mod support remains a priority even without major updates. Rather than implementing Steam Workshop, which the developers noted isn't usable across platforms, they've pointed players to an unofficial community modding Discord and said they've been sharing source code with modders directly to make continued mod development easier.

The Gloom

The bigger news for PEAK's future is console support. The developers confirmed in the same post that PEAK is coming to consoles with full cross-platform play, meaning console players will be able to join the same community as existing Steam players rather than being split into a separate pool. No release window was given beyond "later this year," but the confirmation puts to rest previous uncertainty about whether ports were still planned.

PEAK's roughly four-week game jam origins, June 2025 launch, and over 10 million copies sold in its first year already made it one of the more unlikely indie success stories in recent memory; with The Final Ascent live and console versions on the way, that story isn't over so much as it's changing shape. Separately, PEAK's Makeship anniversary plushies remain available through August 15 for anyone wanting physical merch alongside the update.

PEAK Is a Co-Op Climbing Game Built Around Chaos

For anyone catching up on PEAK for the first time, the game is a four-player co-op climbing title where scouts scale a randomized mountain together, sharing items, reviving each other, and generally relying on teamwork to survive hazards that range from environmental dangers to, as of The Final Ascent, an actively hunting monster.

Per a report from GameDaily, PEAK began as a roughly four-week game jam project developed under the joint studio name Landcrab before releasing on Steam in June 2025, going on to sell more than 10 million copies in its first year and win Best Multiplayer Game at the 2025 Golden Joystick Awards. With The Final Ascent live and console versions confirmed for later this year, that unlikely success story is set to reach an even wider audience.
