Paranormal Activity’s upcoming game adaptation by the team behind The Mortuary Assistant has been canceled. IP owner Paramount and developer Brian Clarke parted ways after Paramount denied Clarke’s request to push back the game’s release date.

2026 Game Canceled Due To Scheduling Disagreement
Paranormal Activity’s highly anticipated video game adaptation has been canceled, per a May 8 post by developer Brian Clarke on X (formerly Twitter). Clarke and publisher DreadXP, the team behind the best-selling horror game, The Mortuary Assistant, filed an extension for the game’s development, which was denied by IP owner Paramount.
Clarke decided to shut down development on the adaptation, titled Paranormal Activity: Threshold, which was slated to release in 2026. "[Paramount] left me with two choices: Rush through development and release a sub-par product I would not be proud of or request we go our separate ways. I chose the latter."
The separation was amicable, said Clarke. DarkStone Digital’s sole developer expressed his sadness about the decision, but he thanked DreadXP for supporting him and expressed his excitement to return to horror after a brief vacation.

The news comes as a surprise, as the game’s first playable demo was made available just last March at PAX East 2026, a major gaming festival in Boston. Initially announced in 2024, Threshold promised to expand the lore of the films and showcase its iconic found-footage style in an immersive horror experience more terrifying than The Mortuary Assistant.
The game would have used a "Haunt System" designed to "dynamically alter the types and intensity of scares players will encounter based on their actions," according to DreadXP and Paramount in an exclusive 2024 interview with Variety.
The game’s first and only trailer was released in October 2025 during The Indie Horror Showcase by DreadXP and The Media Indie Exchange (The MIX). It featured clips of chilling found-footage gameplay that drew excited reactions from gamers and horror enthusiasts across social media.
Threshold would have followed Daniel and Jessica Stewart, a young couple remodeling their first home, as they document the process and discover a dark entity residing within the walls. The game was intended to release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Fans Support Developer’s Decision

Fans are disappointed by the cancellation, but most showed their support for Clarke’s decision and future work on X. He has responded to many comments with his thanks.
"I keep everything I made. I could theoretically repackage. The question becomes can I untangle things meant for a [Paranormal Activity] game enough to get to something worth making and would it just be better to make something new that is 100% me at that point," he said in one of his replies.
Paramount has yet to release a statement about the cancellation of their much-awaited video game adaptation, which has already been taken down from Steam. Another adaptation, the 2017 VR game Paranormal Activity: The Lost Soul, will soon be unavailable on all platforms due to developer VRWERX’s license with Paramount expiring.
VRWERX announced the news on the game’s official X account last April, stating that they cannot afford to keep the IP despite developer interest in making a sequel. Fans took to the post’s comments section to express support for the studio’s future releases.
It is unknown when The Lost Soul will be taken off digital storefronts, but the developer encouraged players to get it while it’s still available. The game has since been offered on sale multiple times across all platforms.
There are currently no known Paranormal Activity games in development. While video game-to-movie adaptations continue to flood the market, with popular titles like Resident Evil, Elden Ring, Bloodborne, and Street Fighter coming soon to the big screen, the future of the film-originated Paranormal Activity franchise in gaming remains uncertain.
