Nintendo has rolled out a new system update on June 15 for the original Nintendo Switch, and although the patch notes themselves are fairly short, one change has become the main talking point among players. After years of complaints about the Switch eShop’s sluggish performance and cluttered browsing experience, many users are focusing on what appears to be a redesign of the Nintendo eShop.
According to Nintendo’s official patch notes, "The Nintendo eShop layout has been redesigned." The company did not go into detail about exactly what was changed behind the scenes, but Version 22.5.0 appears to introduce plenty of quality-of-life improvements, ones that fans have been asking for for years.
Since the console launched in 2017, users have criticized the digital storefront for its slow loading times and difficulty navigating its ever-growing library of games. As thousands of titles filled the marketplace over the years, finding specific games often became more frustrating than it needed to be.
After the update, however, users have been sharing their experience with the redesigned eShop across social media and community forums, with many reporting that the storefront now loads much faster than before. It’s now smoother to use and more responsive overall when searching for games or viewing product listings.
The eShop will now also reflect the console’s theme settings when users select "Basic Dark" in the system menu. Many describe the this as a long-overdue fix, but it finally puts an end to the blinding white glare that players have dealt with for years.
The update also adds new security options tied to the Nintendo eShop. Users can now require a User-Verification PIN to access the storefront or use saved payment methods.
Another improvement focuses on video playback. When watching full-screen videos in the Nintendo eShop or the Nintendo News section, players can now use the ZL and ZR buttons to rewind or fast-forward by 10 seconds.
The more substantial changes in Version 22.5.0 are largely reserved for the original Switch family of systems. The Nintendo Switch 2 received a much lighter update in comparison, primarily expanding accessibility support through the addition of Dutch and Russian languages for Text-to-Speech functions and GameChat speech conversion settings. As usual, Nintendo also included the line "general system stability improvements to enhance the user’s experience."
The Switch eShop may never completely shake off its reputation overnight. Yet if the early response from users is any indication, Version 22.5.0 could be the beginning of a much-needed turnaround for a storefront that has spent years in infamy. Fingers crossed for Switch themes next.
